Out of all the 25 New Faces we’ve done in my time at the magazine one of my favorites is M dot Strange.
The Diy whiz behind the animated feature We Are The Strange, M dot has been laying low the last four years. So I was ecstatic when he emailed me the first teaser for his next feature, Heart String Marionette. (He also sent an exclusive still from the film, which is above.)
M dot hasn’t gone into detail about what the film is about, but watching this it looks like many of his trademarks are returning — demented 3D dolls, Samurai warriors and Tim Burtonesque backdrops. One of the things I’m most excited about is the music in the film, which will be done by Endika. Also based in San Jose like M Dot, he mixes classical music with electronic and jazz. Here we are, at the end of 2009. I’m recalling my top ten favorite film scores of the past decade and we’re down to the last two. Some of you may be under the impression that I prefer certain picks on my list more than others. This is not the case. I had a hard enough time picking out a slim ten so I didn’t even bother trying to prioritize them. I consider them all equally important and enjoyable. However, these next two are my last presented because they, out of the ten, are the most personal. By this I mean that I feel my own tastes are most strongly represented by these two soundtracks. Would it be presumptuous of me to imagine that I have a contingent of enthusiastic readers who have been worried by my recent absence from the hypertext format?
