Despite the fact that the animation is an adaptation of the ballet of the same name, in its musical track, compositions from other ballet adaptations of Tchaikovskiy are used: "Russian dance" (in the dance scene with a broom) and the theme of Rothbart from Swan Lake, as well as the overture and the theme of evil fairy Karabos from Sleeping Beauty.
The plot of the film differs from both the original fairy tale by E. T. A. Hoffman and the libretto of the ballet by P. I. Tchaikovskiy. In particular, the personality of the main character is changed in it, there are no owners of the house, the motive of social inequality is indicated.
In the book, the main character is called Marie Stalbaum, whereas in the film she is not called by name.
