The scene where the balloons cause the chopper to stall and almost crash appears to have been based on a real event. On September 27, 1986, United Way of Cleveland released an estimated 1.5 million balloons into the air as a publicity stunt which went awry and ended in tragedy: two recreational boaters were found drowned in Lake Erie after Coast Guard helicopters searching for them flew into the cloud of balloons forcing them to retreat.
