It is easy to dismiss Not on Your Nellie as another old fashioned 1970s ITV sitcom where time stood still. Some people who have not properly watched it will say it was a victim of a cultural backlash. Hence why it never got repeated.
The first episode is rather liberal for its era. There is an Asian character, he never says a word, then again no calls him any names or gives him verbal abuse.
By the same token, there are two camp gay characters who work in a fashion shop. One of them a fashion designer with flamboyant outfits. Again never says a word. Again they do not attract much comment apart from rolled eyes from a few regulars.
The sitcom is about Nellie Pickersgill (Hylda Baker.) A teetotal spinster who has come down south to run her errant father's pub in London.
The first episode has Ronnie Peabody conniving to get Nellie to sell the pub to him, so he can sell it on to some property developers at a great profit.
Being the opener, it establishes it premise very easily with stereotypes that includes a busty barmaid and a wideboy window cleaner.
It has a broad silly plot. Nellie is full of malapropisms but they are not that funny. There is some physical comedy but it is also rather lame and desperate. Even the way it was edited was odd, some of the scenes did not flow well. I'm guessing the editor was on the pub beer.
