Recently-released titles by – very different – Japanese film icons Yamada Yoji and Shimizu Takashi adorn the Tiffcom sales slate of Shochiku, one of Japan’s oldest and most powerful film studios.
The 91-year-old Yamada, known for classics including “The Yellow Handkerchief” and “The Twilight Samurai,” is behind “Mom, Is That You?,” a heartwarming drama that marks the third picture in his recent “Mother” series, following “Kabei, Our Mother” and “Nagasaki: Memories of My Son.” Starring Yoshinaga Sayuri and Oizumi Yo, the film tells how a dissatisfied salaryman pays a rare visit home and discovers his mother’s previously hidden fashionable and outgoing sides. It released in Japanese theaters on Sept. 1.
Shimizu, who played a large part in bringing Japanese horror to Hollywood’s attention with titles such as “Tomie: Rebirth” and “Ju-on: The Grudge,” has returned to his horror roots with “Sana.” It depicts a musical curse that is delivered in...

Things don’t always work out for child actors in Hollywood. But this year’s Oscar nominations showed three promising paths to grown-up success. Kristen Stewart (“Spencer”), Kirsten Dunst (“The Power of the Dog”), and Kodi Smit-McPhee (also “Power of the Dog”) earned their first nominations this year after long careers that started before any of them could legally drive.
It’s certainly not unheard of for child stars to become Oscar nominees or winners as adults. There are examples going as far back as Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland, who made names for themselves as children and earned multiple Oscar noms as adults, and Rooney ended up winning an Honorary Oscar in 1983 for his lifetime achievements. Jodie Foster earned her first Oscar nomination for “Taxi Driver” (1976) at age 14 before growing up to win two Best Actress trophies for “The Accused” (1988) and “The Silence of the Lambs” (1991). Natalie Portman broke...

Wim Wenders has always worked consistently, but he seems to be on a particularly prolific streak of late. This year alone has seen two of his pictures hit cinemas —his acclaimed Oscar nominated documentary "The Salt Of The Earth," and his far less acclaimed 3D drama "Every Thing Will Be Fine." He's already in post-production on his next film "The Beautiful Days of Aranjuez," and he's got a new picture cooking. Read More: The Essentials: The 10 Best Wim Wenders Films Variety reports that James McAvoy will star in Wenders' "Submergence." Based on the best-selling book by J.M. Ledgard and with a script by Erin Dignam ("The Yellow Handkerchief"), the story concerns the love sustained by a couple who are separated by distance and in extreme circumstances. Here's the book synopsis: In a room with no windows on the coast of Africa, an Englishman, James More, is held captive by jihadist fighters.

The novel Submergence, by J.M Ledgard, is the latest work from the world of literature to be snapped up for a big screen adaptation, and detail on the independent project is beginning to come together. Academy Award nominee Wim Wenders (Every Thing Will Be Fine) is set to helm the production, while Erin Dignam (The Yellow Handkerchief) will pen the adapted screenplay. In addition, we now have confirmation that Golden Globe nominee James McAvoy (X-Men: Days Of Future Past) is on board for the male lead role.
The novel is a tale of two halves, employing both a dual setting and a flashback technique to depict the plight of two characters connected by a past encounter. James More (McAvoy) is a spy who had been working undercover as a water engineer, but is abducted and held hostage for a lengthy period of time by Al Qaeda operatives. Danielle Flinders...

Chicago – Portraying Stephen Hawking, as Eddie Redmayne did in “The Theory of Everything,” required an intense physicality and emotionalism that was projected from different angles, much more challenging than a usual biographical role. In this instance, Redmayne projects the feeling of Hawking’s time and space.
Eddie Redmayne has been on a quick ascension path in his film career, while also conquering television and theater in his native England. After notable roles in the last three years in “My Week with Marilyn” and “Les Misérables,” Redmayne has took on the difficult task of playing Stephen Hawking from a healthy, genius-level university student to the wheelchair bound and computer-voiced theorist with a degenerative nerve disease (Als, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease). The performance is remarkable on many levels, but especially in communicating the soul and love – beyond a physical handicap – upon which a human being exists.

An actor or actress can be on the periphery of stardom for what seems like an eternity before the right role comes along at the right time and transforms his or her career. Do you know how many times you probably saw Michael Fassbender on screen before he technically broke out four years ago? Did you know Benedict Cumberbatch had been a working actor for almost a decade before he finally got Hollywood's attention after "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" and "Sherlock" (2011)? Enter the latest star on the verge of global recognition: Eddie Redmayne. Ironically a good friend of Cumberbatch's, the London native has been a fixture in front of moviegoers since he earned his big break starring alongside Matt Damon and Angelina Jolie in Robert De Niro's "The Good Shepherd" (2006). And, he’s actually worked pretty consistently since, starting with "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" (2007), starring as Kristen Stewart’s...

Starring Claire Danes (“Homeland,” The Hours), James Marsden (X-men), Sarah Bolger (The Spiderwick Chronicles), Thomas Mann (Project X), Jeremy Sisto (Robot & Frank) and two time Academy Award nominee Peter Fonda (Ulee.S Gold), the film centers around a bright and intelligent teenage girl, Lucy (Bolger) and her almost boyfriend Kenny (Mann), who come of age in a small rural town. With her often absent and very young parents (Marsden and Danes) more in need of guidance and parenting than their daughter, Lucy turns to cooking shows to cope with the turbulent pains of adolescence and finds particular comfort in the celebrated culinary personality, Mario Batali. While Lucy charges ahead toward womanhood and her dream of becoming a chef, her mother is desperately searching for her...

It seems too easy to bash this girl; everyone seems to be jumping on board. In fact, it has become a meme to find things with more facial expressions than Kristen Stewart. Her sparkly companion, Robert Pattinson, receives criticism too but less for reasons that are unknown – perhaps it’s because of how openly he bashes the franchise or because he’s in Harry Potter or people have seen other outings of his and are basing their opinions on more than one film. What is hard to understand is why this criticism of Kristen Stewart is so commonplace, so ordinary, so definite, when it is blatantly, blatantly so wrong. You may disagree right now but think of it without being biased and how awful, awful the Twilight franchise is, think about her other performances, can you see what there is actually to see, her talent?

On the Road movie reedited for Toronto screening Based on Jack Kerouac's '50s novel, Walter Salles' Otr adaptation starring Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, and Kristen Stewart (above photo) will be screened at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival. We all knew that. What we didn't know is that Tiff 2012 will unveil a new cut of the film (via indieWIRE), which premiered last spring at the Cannes Film Festival to mixed reviews. The 2hr20m drama has been downsized to approximately 125 minutes. That's an interesting development, as Otr has already been screened in several countries, with varying degrees of box-office success. [Check out the On the Road trailer. Check out Kristen Stewart On the Road poster; Garrett Hedlund On the Road poster.] Otr movie reedit hardly unique On the other hand, different cuts shown in different countries is hardly something new. Whether as a result of poor critical/box-office reception, (perceived) local sensibilities, and/or censorship, the movie you watch in, say, Canada isn't necessarily the exact same movie watched by someone in Singapore,...

Now that the new teaser trailer for Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2 has been released in full, I want to backtrack to some Kristen Stewart and Taylor news bites that came out earlier this month concerning Bella Swan, Jacob Black, and fictional Robert Pattinson/Kristen Stewart love child Renesmee (who will be portrayed my Mackenzie Foy). In short, according to them, don’t question Stewart’s love for Bella and Twilight, and don’t get freaked out by buff guy/werewolf baby imprinting.

Playing an iconic character in a movie franchise that's also a cultural phenomenon can be a proverbial blessing as well as a curse. On the plus side, portraying Bella Swan has brought Kristen Stewart fame, fortune and a (frighteningly) dedicated fan-base who thinks she can do no wrong. On the other hand, there are pockets of film-lovers who can't stand the "Twilight" films or think Stewart is nothing more than a doe-eyed ingénue. "Gossip Girl" star Blake Lively recently admitted: "I don't think I'd say, watch 'Gossip Girl' for my best quality of work. But I am very lucky to have had that experience." I honestly believe Stewart feels the exact same way about "The Twilight Saga." Because, regardless of what you think of the five "Twilight" films (or the Stephenie Meyer books on which they were based), Stewart is a fascinating young actress who deserves to be...

Charlize Theron wishes Kristen Stewart (photo) a Happy Birthday in the video below. Stewart, one of Theron's co-stars in the upcoming Snow White and the Huntsman, turns 22 today. I'm not used to hearing a woman being referred to as "dude" or "man," but perhaps I've been hanging out with the wrong crowd? Stewart's 23rd year (do your math: this is the beginning of her twenty-third year on this planet) will be a busy one on screen. She has three movies coming out: Walter Salles' On the Road (as Mary Lou), Rupert Sanders' aforementioned Snow White and the Huntsman (as Snow White), and Bill Condon's The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 (as Bella Swan). Snow White comes out on June 1; Breaking Dawn 2 on November 16. On the Road will likely be screened at the Cannes Film Festival; it opens in France on May 23, but it has no Us released date yet.

Kristen Stewart, On the Road Kristen Stewart reads — or pretends to read — Marcel Proust's Swann's Way in this photo on the On the Road "set." Based on Jack Kerouac's classic novel, On the Road was directed by Walter Salles from a screenplay by José Rivera (Salles' collaborator on The Motorcycle Diaries). [See also Beautiful Kristen Stewart/On The Road picture.] Stewart's On the Road co-stars are Tron: Legacy / Inside Llewyn Davis Garrett Hedlund and Byzantium / Control / Woman in Love's Sam Riley. Also in the cast: Enchanted / Doubt / Man of Steel's Amy Adams, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King / Eastern Promises' Viggo Mortensen, Effie / Being Julia / Waiting for Forever's Tom Sturridge, Off the Hook / Ideal's Danny Morgan, Elysium / Predator's Alice Braga, Mad Men / Get Him to the Greek's Elisabeth Moss, and Marie Antoinette / Melancholia's Kirsten Dunst. Mostly shot in late 2010 (in Canada, the United States, Mexico, and Argentina), On the Road...

The Twilight Saga actors are getting paid tens of millions of dollars + revenue grosses to star in Breaking Dawn and endless film projects line the horizon. However, there may be a problem. Twilight's three leads Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattison and Taylor Lautner have shown no discernable monetary success out of any of their non-Twilight films. So, has Twilight given any of them a part of its powerful and strong fanbase? The answer is no. Girls will swoon at Pattinson and Lautner on the Internet, but won't drop $10+ to see them in anything besides Edward and Jacob. Fans are either for Team Edward or Jacob, not Team Robert or Taylor.
So far, the most successful of the bunch has been Robert Pattinson. Besides a small Salvador Dali flick, Pattinson hasn't been restraining himself to indies. His first big movie was surprise-this-is-actually-a-9/11-movie Remember Me. Despite poor reviews and a Razzie nomination for Pattinson,...

Holy diamonds are a girl's best friend! Have you seen the trailer for My Week With Marilyn?! Michelle Williams' transformation into the iconic blond bombshell is eerie. And we mean that in a good way. You can practically smell the Chanel No. 5. The film (out Nov. 4) tells the true story of one week in 1956 when one of Sir Laurence Olivier's assistants, Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne, who costarred with Kristen Stewart in The Yellow Handkerchief), was in charge of taking care of Monore while she was in England making The Prince and the Showgirl. A romance blossomed between Monroe and Clark. "She breaks hearts," photographer Milton Greene (Dominic Cooper) warns Clark....

Did you see "Twilight" star Taylor Lautner in "Abduction" last weekend? According to the box office numbers, odds are probably not. Box Office Mojo reports the film grossed below industry projections, earning just $10.9 million at over 3100 screens. That barely covers what it costs to hire Lautner these days. His fee ballooned to $7.5 million last year, making him the highest paid teenage actor in Hollywood at the time. So we have to wonder: is he worth it? Audiences -- or at least one particular and very devoted audience -- will come see him in "Twilight." Are they going to come see him in anything else?
They didn't come out in force for "Abduction," though there are certainly some mitigating circumstances that could account for the film's low grosses. It opened opposite another action movie, "Killer Elite," which didn't perform well at the box office either. It's feasible that the two films...

Kenneth Branagh as Laurence Olivier, My Week with Marilyn Once upon a time, Kenneth Branagh was hailed as the new Laurence Olivier. Back in early 1990, Branagh was nominated for two Academy Awards for directing and starring in Henry V, an adaptation of William Shakespeare's play that back in early 1947 had earned Olivier a Best Actor nomination and an Honorary Award for "his outstanding achievement as actor, producer and director in bringing Henry V to the screen." More Olivier comparisons followed as Branagh went on to tackle Much Ado About Nothing (1993), Othello (1995), and Hamlet (1996). The latter two had served as prestigious Olivier vehicles: Best Picture Oscar winner Hamlet (1948) earned Olivier a Best Actor Oscar and a Best Director nomination; the originally made-for-television Othello (1965) received several special big-screen showings and ended up earning Olivier his seventh Best Actor Oscar nod. (Note: Olivier had the title role in Othello; Branagh played Iago...

Taylor Lautner asked a question to KidsPickFlicks and other of his followers on social networking site Formspring, "Why are you on Team Jacob? I assume you are, of course..." Now, it seems rather than an inncoent question, Lautner was trying to determine if his fame and massive fandom is Taylor-based or Jacob-based.
He explained to Vman magazine the frenzy behind his, Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart's success, "Its definitely these characters we are playing...They are in love with Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, and Jacob Black. I mean, they feel like they know them. We are just lucky enough to be playing them. But I definitely think it’s the characters."
Lautner may be assessing the situation correctly. Pattinson and Stewart have not proven to be box office draws. Pattinson's Remember Me and Water for Elephants did reasonably well considering their budget but didn't exceed expectations. Stewart's found the...
