Daniel Myrick, the co-director and writer of the 1999 indie classic, The Blair Witch Project, has a new fictional documentary dealing with a subject he says he has a passion for, alien abduction. It’s called Skyman and it’s available on VOD and playing in drive-in theaters now.
“I’ve always been fascinated with the subject matter,” Myrick tells Den of Geek. “When I was growing up in the late seventies and early eighties, everything from UFOs to Bigfoot, Loch Ness Monster, Bermuda Triangle, and the zeitgeists in those days, and sort of inspired me as a preteen to kind of start my own UFO club in my neighborhood. And me and a couple of friends got together and did sort of our version of The X-Files, where we were out investigating neighborhoods and people that had visitations and whatnot.”

About a decade ago, the team behind the biggest hit of the decade wrote a screenplay for the prequel. It had been a long time coming. In 1999, the shaky-cam horror movie “The Blair Witch Project” grossed nearly $250 million around the world, turning the microbudget chronicle of a few friends who venture into the woods and never returned into an unexpected phenomena. “We had a plan for if it failed, what do with our finances without declaring bankruptcy,” said Eduardo Sanchez, who co-directed with Daniel Myrick. “We didn’t have a plan if it became the highest-grossing independent film of all time.”
However, distributor Artisan Entertainment had plenty of ideas. In the immediate aftermath of “The Blair Witch Project” taking off around the world, the company announced its investment two follow-ups, only one of which came to fruition. Myrick and Sanchez, eager to try something different, instead threw themselves into raising...

The Blair Witch Project celebrates its 15th anniversary in the UK today (October 22).
The frightening, low-budget, found-footage horror movie was written and directed by Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, and featured an unknown cast who used their own names in the film.
The Blair Witch Project 15 years on: The horror movie that changed everything
It became the first of its kind in Hollywood due to its commercial success and viral online campaign, which was created to make the production look like a real documentary. The Blair Witch website with details on the made-up mythology still exists.
And the clever campaign worked on some gullible and vulnerable viewers. We remember witnessing real tears of fear being shed by some audience members in the cinema (and definitely not ours...).
It purports to be a documentary shot by three inquisitive, daring, and at times daft students investigating the local Blair Witch legend in the Maryland forest.

Daniel Myrick, who co-wrote and co-directed The Blair Witch Project with Eduardo Sanchez, is set to direct his own project, Under the Bed. Radar Pictures have just picked it up and we have all the info on Myrick’s next film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Under The Bed is based on a true story of a stalker who takes up “residence underneath the bed of his female target, subtly manipulating her life until ultimately revealing his presence.”
Myrick is gearing up to direct his own script, and producing the film will be Ted Field, Mike Weber and Shawn Papazian. Tom van Dell, Eustace Hicks and Aldo Lapietra are on board as executive producers. Radar Pictures were behind this year’s Riddick and Spring Breakers, and are hoping to finance Under The Bed in the same way as the latter.

Daniel Myrick, who directed The Blair Witch Project alongside Eduardo Sanchez, is getting back behind the camera for a new horror thriller, Under the Bed , says a story today at Empire . No relation to the Steven C. Miller-directed film which came out this year, this Under the Bed hails from Radar Pictures and follows a woman plagued by a stalker who, unbeknownst to her, has taken up residence underneath her bed and is using his position to control aspects of her life. Myrick last helmed The Objective back in 2008.

Of The Blair Witch Project's two directors, we've heard more in recent years from Eduardo Sanchez than we have from Daniel Myrick. Sanchez has popped up in the immediate past with Lovely Molly and a contribution to VHS2, and has Bigfoot horror Exists in post-production. For Myrick's last directorial project you have to cast your mind back to 2008's The Objective, but we shouldn't have too much longer to wait for his next film. He's entered into a deal with Radar Pictures to make the "creepy indie thriller" Under The Bed.Based on a true story, the film sees a stalker "taking up residence underneath the bed of his female target, subtly manipulating her life until ultimately revealing his presence". It sounds like the stuff of urban legend, but a quick search reveals something like this did actually happen in Washington DC in 2006. Parking valet Carlo Castellanos-Feria gained access to his victim's keys,...

If you’re not a big fan of the current crop of Found Footage movies, you can blame it all on Eduardo Sanchez and Daniel Myrick, the co-directors of 1999′s “The Blair Witch Project”. But if you happen to dig the Found Footage genre, well, you can thank them, then. Sanchez’s co-director Myrick resurfaced in 2008 with the horror outing “The Objective”, while Sanchez returns with the creepy “Lovely Molly”, which recently showed off its chills at SXSW last month. We’ve only seen a teaser and a spooky clip previously from the movie, but the full trailer now arrives. Dig it, won’t you? When newlywed Molly Reynolds returns to her long-abandoned family home, frightful reminders of a nightmarish childhood begin seeping into her new life. She soon begins an inexorable descent into an evil that blurs the lines between psychosis and possession. Starring Gretchen Lodge, Johnny Lewis, and Alexandra Holden.

Tim Tebow is trying to bring a winning environment back to Denver, but even if the Broncos can't get their shit together again this year and there is no Super Bowl on the horizon, the Mile High City does have another pretty interesting event scheduled that might make all the fans of pigskin violence forget their gridiron woes for a while.
For the second consecutive year the Starz Film Center in Denver will be the home for The Mile High Horror Film Festival. In furtherance of my lifelong obsession with box-office numbers, I had every intention this morning of spending a couple of hours pouring over box-office grosses and comparing them to budgets to arrive at the ten most profitably movies of all time, on a percentage basis. As it turns out, the good people over at The Numbers have not only already compiled such a list, but they included the Top 20 most profitable movies of all time, percentage-wise. I'm not petty enough to deprive you of such information just because I didn't compile it, so I offer you their list and also encourage box-office enthusiasts to check out The Numbers.

Chicago – While adult comedies continue to rake in the big bucks at the box office, adult dramas continue to plunge in popularity, particularly dramas centering on the war in Iraq. When a brilliant edge-of-your-seat thriller like Kathryn Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker” or a galvanizing documentary like “Taxi to the Dark Side” can’t even manage to find an audience, a tiny horror picture like “The Objective” doesn’t stand a chance.
DVD Rating: 2.5/5.0
“The Objective” opened in a few theaters earlier this year, performed badly, and has now been unceremoniously dumped into stores. Not an impressive feat for “The Blair Witch Project” co-director Daniel Myrick. At least the new film by his “Witch” partner, Eduardo Sanchez, was chosen for the latest “Ghost House Underground” collection.
The Objective was released on DVD on October 13th, 2009.

Poor Daniel Myrick. After all but setting the world on fire a decade ago with The Blair Witch Project (co-directed with Eduardo Sanchez), a film that managed to grab headlines in the summer of The Matrix, Star Wars: Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, and The Sixth Sense, he returns now with The Objective, a film that is split by two opposing instincts: recapturing the glory of his initial success and expanding his vision to a scope that would suggest he’s ready to move on to a studio feature. Neither instinct is satisfied by either the film’s plotline or its execution, leaving us to wonder what movie he really wanted to make.

It's another awesome week for DVD releases gang. First up is Pieter Van Hees' Belgium thriller, Left Bank (review, amazon), and dark slow boiler that our own Hal McDermot said was "good at combining the familiar with the unsettling."
Then of course we have a couple of apocalyptic flicks, one classic and one soon-to-be. Richard Stanley's 1990 Pa android shocker, Hardware (exclusive clip, amazon), gets an overdue royal treatment from Severin who have lovingly restored the film and stuffed it with extras. As soon as my copy arrives I'll be posting a review so stay tuned. The soon-to-be classic is of course Kyle Rankin's comic tinged bug-pocalypse romp, Infestation (review, amazon). This is one of those film that does so much with so little and has so much fun doing it that you'd feel like kind of a jerk for dissing its shortcomings. Don't let the bad DVD...

"Body horror" is a term lovingly bandied about when talking about the works of David Cronenberg, or in some instances, Frank Henenlotter. Now a trio of sick minds are making it their own in Teratoma , a joint production of Jaz Films and Neo Art & Logic. Taking its name from the medical condition in which a subject forms a large tumor, the film is going to be directed by Ryuhei Kitamura ( Midnight Meat Train ). He'll be working from a script by Jim Agnew and Sean Keller, the writers behind Dario Argento's Giallo . They also did a rewrite on John Carpenter's upcoming thriller The Ward . Jeremy Wall is producing on behalf of Jaz Films ( The Objective ) and Neo Art & Logic's Joel Soisson and Aaron Ockman. " Teratoma is The Fly meets Rosemary's...

Current events inform these two genre films: Daniel Myrick’s The Objective takes place against the backdrop of the war in the Middle East, while Jeff Fisher’s Killer Movie puts a horrific spin on the endless reality-television trend. For The Blair Witch Project’s Myrick, The Objective marks a return to the scenario of a group of people venturing into forbidding territory where mysterious forces threaten them, while Fisher has intimate knowledge of his film’s specific milieu, having served time on the likes of The Real World/Road Rules and The Simple Life. But while the former effectively makes an already harrowing situation worse with the introduction of the supernatural, the latter doesn’t come up with anything that’s as scary as, say, the prospect of sitting through a whole season of Paris Hilton hijinx. Myrick, who scripted The Objective with Mark A. Patton and Wesley Clark Jr.,...

When The Blair Witch Project opened in '99, it deftly preyed upon audiences' fear of the dark. A decade later, co-creator Daniel Myrick is flipping the coin in The Objective . Instead of relying on conventional nocturnal scare tactics, Myrick takes on the unenviable task of crafting a daytime horror film in the most barren of locations. Opening in Los Angeles on March 13th, the film stars Jonas Ball as a CIA agent sent into Afghanistan to investigate a mysterious radiation signature. With a Special Ops team, he ventures into a Middle Eastern "Bermuda Triangle" of sorts and faces an inhuman threat. ShockTillYouDrop.com spoke with Myrick about the film shortly after its debut in New York earlier this month. ShockTillYouDrop.com: The last time we spoke, you were...

And in the film actor Jonas Ball plays a CIA agent who leads a U.S. Special Ops force on a mission to find an influential Muslim cleric. While on the mission they find themselves lost in a Middle Eastern "Bermuda Triangle" of ancient evil and faced with an enemy that none of them could ever have imagined. For anyone who has already seen the film, they know it concludes on an ambiguous note that leaves the fate of Ball's character up for interpretation. One of the more interesting films to cross my path thus far this year is Daniel Myrick's The Objective, which pits a group of Special Ops soldiers led by a CIA operative against a sort of "Bermuda Triangle of ancient evil" in the Afghan desert. Along with Blair Witch's Michael C. Williams and newcomer Jonas Bell, the cast includes a couple of real-deal military vets, which adds enormously to its authenticity.

Release Date: Feb. 6 (limited)
Director: Daniel Myrick
Writers: Daniel Myrick, Mark A. Patton and Wesley Clark Jr.
Cinematographer: Stephanie Martin
Starring: Jonas Ball, Matthew R. Anderson, Jon Huertas, Sam Hunter, Jeff Prewett
Studio/Run Time: IFC Films, 104 mins.
Whatever else he may do, director Daniel Myrick will always have the words "Blair Witch Project" attached to his name. Judging from his work on The Objective, that may be the way he likes it, since the film in large part reprises what Blair Witch did earlier but without all the faux-cinema-verite trappings. Jonas Ball plays a CIA agent searching for a massive radiation silhouette spotted by spy satellites in Afghanistan. With him is a small group of special ops soldiers, assigned to protect him from what may lie in wait for them in the post-9/11 country. The group soon finds itself lost in the desert and under attack by some unknown supernatural force.

"You'll meet this guy, have a beer with him, or whatever; a month later, you'll wake up and take everybody out at the car dealership where you bought your car.” That’s how The Objective director Daniel Myrick explains what happens when one has a run-in with the lead in the new film he’s planning, Savant.
Speaking with Sci Fi Wire, Myrick explained that the film’s about a man who has the uncanny ability to make you do whatever he wants, ”thus turning the people into mass murderers, [by] doing nothing more than having a regular conversation." Man, I’d get people to do far more interesting things than mass murder, let me tell ya.
Myrick’s been working on Savant for a few years now and told the site he hopes to have it rolling by spring. This will be, in his words, ”the biggest thing I've done so far.

One could say that The Objective, which takes place in Afghanistan, isn’t a political film, but why would you want to? It is, but in the most even-keeled manner I have ever seen. And for that reason I want to salute (no pun intended) this movie and tell you about my experience.
Politics and horror. Oil and vinegar. Peanut butter and jelly. Sure, you could separate the two and digest each by their lonesome, but why would you want to? Horror films, just being what they are—horrific—are by their very nature political films. That’s not a bad thing. They and the rest of the transgressives have made a life of pushing up against what is acceptable. To those of...
