Good news, Russian film fans! Pavel Lungin’s lavish thriller Queen of Spades will be released On-demand & on digital platforms in the Us, UK, Australia and New Zealand on October 30, 2018, from Samuel Goldwyn Films. The film was co-produced by famed Russian producer Fedor Bondarchuk and stars Kseniya Rappoport (The Double Hour), Ivan Yankovskiy (Ikariya), Mariya Kurdenevich (Za Toboy), Evgeniy Zelenskiy, and Igor Mikurbinov (Generation P). Synopsis: Once upon a time, the great soprano Sophia Maier conquered the world with her voice, her beauty and the legend she carefully built around herself. Now, only the legend remains- the diva herself hasn’t performed for years, nor been seen in the glittering circles of society she once dominated. But the woman who fascinated...

Rustam Mosafir's historical/horror/fantasy epic The Scythian will be hitting Brazil's Fantaspoa, the largest film festival in Latin America which turned me onto the trailer and, wow, this movie looks completely savage.
I'm a huge fan Russian epics. They tend to plod, but they are gorgeous and brutal. See Wolfhound or The Inhabited Island (aka Dark Planet)
Synopsis:
These are times when one civilization is replacing another. A new era is about to begin in Central Eurasia. Scythians, the proud warriors, are all but gone. The few of their descendan...

The opening paragraphs of IndieWire’s review of “The Emoji Movie” may have read like a desperate cry for help, but the fact remains that movies are literally a light in the darkness, and that’s never been more true than it was (and continues to be) during the summer of 2017.
While the season tends not to be associated with high art, this hasn’t really been one of those years where the past has all that much bearing on the present. Things don’t make a lot of sense anymore, and that’s proven to be as true for pop culture as it has for every other aspect of our country. Generally speaking, that hasn’t been great news (the world is falling apart, we’re all gonna die, etc.). But when it comes to the multiplexes, people may have been happy to find that down is the new up.

For a group of con men and a descendant of Van Helsing, robbing Dracula's castle could be the score they need to be set for life, but things get complicated when vampires stand in their way of a big payday in Stephan Franck's graphic novel series Silver. With Dark Planet Comics launching a Kickstarter campaign for Silver Volume 3, we had the chance to catch up with Franck for our latest Q&A feature to discuss the influences of Bram Stoker's Dracula on his work, what readers can expect to see in Volume 3, and much more.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us today, Stephan. When and how did you first come up with the idea for Silver?
Stephan Franck: It’s my pleasure, thank you for having me. Two of my greatest fascinations in story have always been vampires and conmen, and this notion...

Big budget Russian scifi picture Inhabited Island - the latest from 9th Company director Fyodor Bondarchuk, based on a story by Stalker authors The Strugatsky Brothers - is one we’ve been following here with great anticipation for quite some time now. And with a pedigree like that - Bondarchuk is easily one of the best things going in Russia and the Strugatsky’s should need no introduction to serious Sf fans - why not? The film has toyed with its audience to a degree, releasing an initial trio of three very brief teasers a good while back then running in silence before beginning to trickle out longer trailers, each of which begins with largely the same footage before breaking some new ground. Well, with the Russian release of part one of this two part epic slowly drawing nearer the third of those trailers has just released and we’ve...

Been craving more footage from big budget Russian sci-fi picture Inhabited Island? Well, here is something to scratch that itch: a new, second trailer can be found in the Twitch Videoplayer.
It was uploaded by our regular Russian reader Vladimir, so thanks go out to him!
Which makes five entries for Inhabited Island in our player so far. People might think that is a bit much honor for this film, but I’m not amongst them. Fyodor Bondarchuk, the director of 9th Company, doing massive-scale science fiction?
Intelligent massive-scale science fiction even? Man, I can hardly wait.
You’ll find the new trailer, the old trailer and the three previous teasers below the break.

MOSCOW -- Alexander Rodnyansky is stepping down as CEO of CTC Media, Russia's leading independent media company. He will be replaced by Anton Kudryashov as of Aug. 4.
Rodnyansky will remain the company's president and also will join its board of directors, CTC Media said Tuesday.
The company said the board's decision was motivated by "new operational and organizational challenges" that follow "diversification of its business, including several recent acquisitions."
Meanwhile, business daily Kommersant pointed to CTC's plummeting capitalization as well as falling ratings for the CTC channel, the group's main media asset, and said that the company is set to undergo a major restructuring of its management.
Kudryashov, 40, is the founder of the Afisha Publishing House and was chairman of that company's board until 2005.
Rodnyansky joined CTC Media in 2002 and was appointed CEO in February 2004. Under his management, the channel became one of the leaders of Russia's TV industry.
According to the Kommersant report, Rodnyansky will now focus on producing films, such as Fyodor Bondarchuk's "Inhabited Island" and on the Kinotavr festival, which he co-owns.
