While examining the crime scene where a mother, father and young girl were violently murdered, investigators come across the family's oldest son, Eric Wallace, hiding in the attic. The young man, obviously high on drugs , is a prime suspect but claims to have heard nothing while his parents and sibling were being killed. He finally admits that he had snuck out to be with his math tutor, Justin Darcy, and wasn't home at the the time of the killing. The boy claims his father worked in a prison but, oddly, the police can find no evidence to that effect. The reason leads to solving the case. Meanwhile, Brenda - along with all other section heads - has been told to eliminate all overtime and to reduce their teams by one detective owing to budget cuts. Assistant Chief Pope suggests to her that it's time for Lt. Provenza to retire.
