The Boise National Forest is just north of Boise. Spokane, where the victims are taken from, is a good 7 or 8 hour drive northwest along what is mostly a two-lane highway, U.S. 95, that offers access to much more rugged, less-accessible wilderness areas.
As stated above, Boise National Forest is much further away from Spokane than the show would have people believe. There are a number of much closer national forests, or cities to base it in, that would make more sense, as BNF is closer to Oregon and Utah than Northeastern Washington. Also, the town they base their investigation from, Deer Park, WA, is even further north than Spokane proper.
