Superficial but accessible and a lot more engaging than I expected it to be

The closest I get to having an interest in fashion is watching the weekly cattiness on that Tyra Banks modelling reality game show, outside of that I'm really still struggling with the idea that a shirt might cost any more than £50! So when this film opened with a voice-over asking questions about the elite club of Haute Couture and threatened to find out more about what drives these incredibly rich women to spend hundreds and hundreds of thousands on handmade outfits, I immediately got my back up thinking this would not be for me. I immediately assumed I would be spending an hour sick to my stomach and angry at rich people buying a dress for the sort of money that most of us would associate with a four bedroom house in a great school area.

However the film manages to just about keep that aspect of this world at bay by being accessible and interesting from start to finish. It isn't clear if Kinmonth likes this world or not and it is this delivery that keeps the film interesting because she doesn't seem to be pushing an agenda but instead appears to be genuinely on a trip of discovery. As it is the film moves briskly through the world at a high level and gets lots of good interviews from wearers and designers alike. Although I wanted it to kick off, the issue of money is never really brought up as I imagine that they would have considered it crude and the film would have been stopped dead. Perhaps it is like the fashion world itself, operating in the superficial and without time for questions of reality but the film never really questions any of this – and perhaps that is for the best.

Although I did find it quite distasteful at times (the world, not the film) I was engaged by the chance to see these people and this world from the inside (more or less) and this is what made the film interesting. Kinmonth does a good job of pulling it together but she doesn't make as good a presenter and her voice-over narration is occasionally weak – most notable in the unnatural final line of the film, which she delivers like a clunker.

A surprisingly engaging film then that gets the pace and tone spot on and builds up the world thanks to a great range of contributions. Like the world itself, it is operating on a superficial but this is part of why it works and a reason why it is easy to enjoy, accessible and interesting – no matter what you think of it.

Engaging if you're into frocks!

As a previous poster said one would think by the show's description that one could be envious of the women who spend tens of thousands on a dress that they'll wear only a couple of times.

Margy Kinmonth's delivery was wonderful! I loved that we got to experience her first haute couture moment ie. when she got to actually try something on.

I didn't know that if a woman can get into the same size that the model wore she gets a %30 discount!!! I guess that's worth dieting for. Unfortunately, even if I could fit width wise I'd still be 2 feet too short.

If you really enjoy flipping through Vogue you'll like this show. It's like Vogue come to life!! I showed the beginning of this show to my husband and he said he wished he could spend that much on clothing for me....ahhhhhhh a gal can dream!! I can not remember the name of the woman who's from Texas. The glee in her face as she spoke about her love of couture was just infectious!!! I was really impressed by the look of the women. Sure these women aren't 22 or 32 but they are impeccably glamorous.

I come away from watching this show with a mind to do better, to dress better. Haute couture is not in the cards for me as such but I can strive to dress in something that actually fits and not just something that I've managed to struggle into.

A peek into the other side

Beautiful movie...very intriguing fantasy world most of us will never access. I couldn't help wondering how these women felt about living so opulently when there is such misery in the world. I mean what do they think about being people massacred in Darfur? And then it occurs to me...these women don't care. Half of the women featured are related to Nazi's for chrrissakes. Not that I believe people should be judged by whom we are related too, but it does demonstrate the sort of social milieu they live in.

So this is an excellent film yet it also shows a great deal of the inner coldness that exudes from most of the people who create and indulge in this select society.

Spoiler: Selfishness packaged as ART

Warning: Spoilers
Delusional wealthy women running about Paris, grabbing up clothing that wasn't all that. When they finally did wear these pieces specially made for them, from what they saw on the runway, (modified) they still looked ridiculous.

Pitiful people who don't know what to do with their money....filling up rooms with hanging rags of material, the smell of moth-balls must be atrocious....(not in the closets...on the women, themselves.) Waste of effort by the film-maker. Looked like "America's Next Top Model" after they sell the product.

The loneliness of these women, who show up to look at each other in their outfits, is palpable.

They seem like clothing mannequins, themselves....only worth the value of the property....trophies....of the industrial age.
