From all the Alien 40th Anniversary short films, this is definitely the most interesting one, as it is just not a re-thread or recreation of the elements and atmosphere of the honoured movie. And although being very cheap looking in its execution, it compensates with its original idea.

The idea of a lonely android who sees in the alien not fear but companionship is an interesting alternative look at the original threat. In fact, when you see the android approach the facehugger as it was a small dog, you feel a sense of confusion, as you know it's supposed to be a scary being, but the protagonist and the camera treat it like a loveable one.

If there's something I would criticise, it would be the fact that the android is slowly approaching its end, only because it takes a bit from the urgency of the alien's life expectancy. Nevertheless, as the android needs it to keep it company during the remaining journey, its quest to find human life to prolong the alien's life is in itself a natural step to this short's original idea and, again, a bold and worth-it variation on the tropes the 1979 movie created.

Gradual failure

Such a good start with such a bad ending. At least visually looks great.

Not among the best Warning: Spoilers
"Alone" is as the full title already implies another of these recently made short films on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Alien franchise. It is (according to IMDb) the first and so far only filmmaking credit by writer and director Noah Miller and among the longer entries as this one runs for 11:45 plus another half minutes of closing credits. Most of these tribute movies stay on single-digit numbers minute-wise. Anyway, on the opposite end of the scale, this is really among those with the fewest characters. For over 8 minutes, it is a one-person show (actress Taylor Lyons). The character of Hope (that name really?) is in the center of the story and it is really more about survival and we find out about her backgrounds why she is where she is and what her daily routine looks like. Also how loneliness may have had a bad impact on her already. The last third of the film is a bit more about the action as another (male) character enters the picture and also the Alien references become more frequent. I must say I was not too impressed by this one here. It is probably not the weakest from the series, but among the weaker overall I suppose. Taking Miller's lack of experience into account, it isn't all bad I suppose. But story-wise, it certainly could have been more convincing. If they were going for a character study for the most part here, then there must be better writing. Lyons does what she can with what she is given here, but it just isn't enough and the more action-packed final 4 minutes (including a decent plot twist) cannot make up for that. It's a thumb-down for me. Only check it out if you totally adore Alien and everything related to it.

Amateur

The worst of all the alien shorts. Poorly directed. Zero atmosphere (excuse the pun). Bad acting. Every opportunity at suspense is ruined. At 12 minutes it feels more like 45. Even with all it's set pieces, and shot changes, it's amateur hour. I actually felt sorry for the production designer and set dressers who obviously had a lot to do with a limited budget. There just wasn't the need for so many setups. With a decent director it might have worked. Embrassing. An insult to the Alien universe.
