The scene filmed at the station where Ishii Yuichi is reprimanded was filmed in one shot and the team dispersed after filming because they were filming without permission and the Security Team was coming to arrest them.
Ishii Yuichi is the real-life proprietor of the Japanese company Family Romance, founded in 2017. The "LLC" in the film's title was added by Herzog.
The film casts non-professional actors speaking Japanese. It was shot in the spring and summer of 2018 in Tokyo and Aomori Prefecture, Japan. The production wrapped in August that year. Herzog shot about 300 to 350 minutes of footage in total.
The earliest known rental family service was offered by Japan Efficiency Corporation (Nihon Kokasei Honbu) starting in the fall of 1991.
Sion Sono's drama Noriko's Dinner Table (2005) also utilizes a rent-a-family business, as a major part of its plot.
