If you’re looking for new ideas from the House of Mouse, you might be waiting awhile.
During Disney’s Q2 earnings call, Disney CEO Bob Iger made comments to the effect that there was “a lot of value in sequels” as they’re easier to market. He also pointed to competitors’ doing well with sequels, likely meaning DreamWorks and Illumination.
Because God forbid the studio that innovated animation for decades tries something new.
This would explain why we’re seeing Moana 2, Frozen 3 and 4, Zootopia 2, Inside Out 2 and Toy Story 5 and not the next groundbreaking animated feature film from Disney and/or Pixar.
In fact, looking at their upcoming animated slate, only Elio is an original concept.

Woody and Buzz have a date to return to theaters. Disney will release Pixar’s Toy Story 5 on June 19, 2026, the studio announced Friday.
Disney CEO Bob Iger first announced Toy Story 5 in February 2023, with the sequel an attempt to return to form for the franchise after the disappointing performance of the 2022 spinoff, Lightyear, which voice starred Chris Evans. Toy Story has spanned four mainline films dating back to 1995, with the most recent installment topping $1 billion at the box office in 2019. The features have voice starred Tom Hanks as Woody and Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear.
Toy Story 5‘s date with theaters was among a slew of changes and additions made to the Disney release calendar. The studio also pushing Dwayne Johnson’s live-action remake of Moana by a year to July 10, 2026 (it was previously slated for from June 27, 2025). It's astonishing to look back at John Lasseter's 1995 film "Toy Story" and regard how rudimentary it looks by today's standards. "Toy Story" was the first widely distributed CGI-animated feature film, and it felt overwhelmingly revolutionary at the time. Many were astonished at how expressive and fun CGI characters could be, and the film's success effectively ushered in a sea change in the animation world. In 2024, traditional cel animation is incredibly uncommon, and CGI is the naturally assumed standard.
CGI characters are designed to essentially be "puppets," in terms of their elasticity. Animators, at least at the time, were forced to stay on-model, only able to expand eyeballs or raise eyebrows so high. It wouldn't be for years that CG characters could mutate, squash, and stretch the way hand-drawn characters could. "Toy Story" benefitted from being about, well, toys. Its characters were all made of plastic, so there was an...

“Civil War,” the A24 action-thriller about a violently divided United States, isn’t offering up much in the way of escapism. Though it takes place in the dystopian future, it not-so-subtly feeds into the blue-state/red-state rift that’s sure to widen as the race for the White House heats up.
That strategy is prominent in the movie’s patriotic-tinged marketing materials, which include a blood-soaked trailer featuring a missile that blows up the Lincoln Memorial, a poster of soldiers sandbagging the Statue of Liberty’s flame and references to successionist forces of California and Texas.
Yet elsewhere in Hollywood, movie studios are trying desperately to steer clear of promotional efforts that seem even remotely political — lest they find themselves unwittingly embroiled in a cultural firestorm. It’s a fair concern. Long before the country started preparing for one of the most polarizing presidential elections in its history, several movies...

Po returns with his goofiness and is tasked by Master Shifu to train further and become the spiritual leader of the Valley of Peace in Kung Fu Panda 4. Directed by Mike Mitchell, it was released earlier this month.
This is the fourth installment in this franchise, and the third part was released in 2016. The martial arts animated comedy films have entertained the audience, especially the young ones, since 2008. Hollywood stars like Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu, and others have been a part of the franchise. Jolie voiced the character of Tigress. The franchise is over $2 billion now, thanks to the 4th installment’s impressive earnings.

Censoring Streamers
Malaysia’s Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has said that he plans to hold meetings with the Communications Ministry with a view to extending the remit of the country’s Film Censorship Board (Lpf) to video streamers. Currently, the Lpf has jurisdiction over theatrical releases, but not content carried on the internet.
Malaysia has been notable in demanding cuts – sometimes refused by rights holders – to imported and local films, especially where they touch on religion or homosexuality, even tangentially. Hollywood films “Thor” and “Lightyear” were both banned. Last year, local director Amanda Nell Eu denounced the censored cut of her prize-winning film “Tiger Stripes.”
Speaking in parliament, Saifuddin said “the Lpf will not approve the screening of any films that promote LGBTQ, communism, Islamophobia, and those conflicting Islamic beliefs.”

A few weeks ago, Walt Disney's president of motion picture studios, Sean Bailey, stepped down from his position at the company. He had been in that role for 15 years, and under his tenure, Disney went all-in on a plan to release live-action remakes of the studio's classic animated movies. All told, Bailey was responsible for making around $7 billion for Disney, a good percentage of which came from those live-action remakes. But now Bailey's out, and Disney appears to be heading in a new direction.

Emotions are high this afternoon as Pixar debuts a full Inside Out 2 trailer, teasing more of the plot while introducing several new elements to Riley’s psyche. The new trailer arrived just as Pixar Studios invited us to visit their studio later this month to explore Pixar’s highly-anticipated sequel to Pete Docter and Ronnie Del Carmen’s 2015 animated original. I’ll be representing JoBlo during the event and could not be more excited! It’s been a dream of mine to visit Pixar Studios for decades. Make sure you visit the site closer to the film’s release as I report what I saw and share more details about the upcoming sequel!

Harvey Guillén is “optimistic” we’re headed toward a world with a queer Disney princess. The What We Do in the Shadows and Wish actor said this week he thinks “we are in the life span of that potentially happening.”
“I think they’re making strides in the right direction,” Guillén told ComicBook.com of Disney’s queer representation. “I think it’s hard to rebuild a wheel that’s already been in motion for a while, and it’s hard to think of a new direction, especially in where we’re at with the world, but they’re putting their best foot forward, I think. The last full weekend of February was another dour and dreary time at the box office as none of the three new wide releases made much of a mark. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Despite the release of three new movies, Paramount’s biopic, “Bob Marley: One Love,” starring Kingsley Ben-Adir and Lashana Lynch, remained atop the box office despite a fairly large 53% drop from Presidents Day weekend. It took first place with an estimated $13.5 million, bringing its domestic total to $71.2 million. Over the weekend, it hit $100 million globally in less than two weeks of release, adding another $15 million internationally for a global total of $120.6 million.
Opening in 1,949 theaters, Crunchyroll’s Anime “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To The Hashira Training” was actually a combination of episodes from the previous season of the series and a preview of the upcoming season. It gave fans a first...

In January of 2021, Megan Ellison got a call from Erik Lomis, the former head of distribution at her company, Annapurna Pictures, asking if she’d like to take a look at a movie whose filmmakers needed a lifeline. Disney was days away from announcing that it planned to shutter Blue Sky Studios, the 500-person, Greenwich, Connecticut-based animation studio it had inherited in the 2019 Fox acquisition, and with that closure, the Burbank media giant would be dropping Blue Sky’s most promising movie, Nimona.
“I wasn’t really engaging in new film projects at the time, but being curious, I said yes,” Ellison said, in an email.
Ellison watched the hand-drawn storyboard reels, which directors Nick Bruno and Troy Quane had adapted from Nd Stevenson’s 2015 graphic novel, and instantly connected with the title character, a shape-shifter voiced by Chloë Grace Moretz who appears most often as a young woman, but...

Hideaki Anno is one of the most brilliant voices in animation -- a writer, director, and animator responsible for masterpieces such as the hugely influential "Neon Genesis Evangelion" (and its many endings), but also the anime that did the same twist as Pixar's "Lightyear" much better and decades earlier. Anno additionally belongs to the prestigious club of animators who successfully made the jump to directing live-action projects alongside Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Brad Bird, Tim Burton, and more. Anno not only brought Go Nagai's "Cutie Honey" to live-action successfully, but he also reinvented iconic franchises like "Kamen Rider" and "Godzilla."
The last one is important because Anno's "Shin Godzilla" is part of a new golden age of Godzilla stories. "Shin Godzilla" is a more satirical take on the King of the Monsters and a poignant movie inspired by the Fukushima nuclear disaster, as well as the response...

When Disney CEO Bob Iger announced Wednesday that an animated Moana sequel would swim into theaters in November of this year, it inspired both excitement amongst fans of the 2016 original and questions about the live-action remake set to star Dwayne Johnson.
The live-action Moana, announced a year ago by Iger and Johnson, is slated to hit theaters in June 27, 2025. Now, it is almost certain to depart that date to give both films space, according to insiders. Disney hasn’t broached the matter, and declined comment. Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks Productions, which is producing the live-action version, also declined comment.
The two Moana films show how bullish Iger is on the property— and for good reason.

Pixar Animation Studios is planning to reduce its workforce in the coming months, an insider confirmed to Deadline, as part of overall content spending trims at Disney.
An initial report on the planned staff cuts by TechCrunch indicated it could affect up to 20% of the overall workforce, but the source pushed back on that estimate. No specifics or timeline for the reduction have yet been determined.
The pullback is related to an easing of the studio’s production workflow, which went into overdrive under former CEO Bob Chapek. The ex-boss not only put three straight Pixar films onto Disney+ without a theatrical release, but he also ordered episodic series, which the animation studio had never previously done. 2024 can’t come fast enough.
When the clock strikes midnight on Jan. 1, Hollywood will close the book on arguably the most tumultuous 12 months in a generation, with the town roiled by devastating strikes, the implosion of the superhero movie and deep divisions on everything from AI to Israel. But as Tinseltown ushers in a new year, will it suffer from a monster hangover? Many of the most vexing issues remain unresolved.
“There’s a huge leadership vacuum, and that’s not about to change,” says Michael Nathanson, the former head of MGM Studios and Columbia Pictures.
Nathanson, who started in the film and TV business in the ’70s, notes that Lew Wasserman, Bob Daly and Mike Ovitz commanded respect and fear, and could galvanize the industry in chaotic times like writers and actors strikes.

Look, we all made mistakes during Covid. Disney was no exception, banishing “Soul,” “Luca,” and “Turning Red” to streaming as Disney+ exclusives. It will now spend the first quarter of 2024 making it up to Pixar with what Disney called “special engagement” theatrical runs for each.
“Soul” was the first and truest Covid casualty of the bunch, and it will be the first to (finally) arrive in theaters on January 12. “Turning Red” is set for a February 9 release; “Luca” will arrive on March 22. All three movies will be screened along with Pixar shorts, just like in the good ‘ol days.
Despite the “special engagement” designation, end dates have not been booked in advance, a source with knowledge of the plan told IndieWire. If a film performs at the box office, by all means, run free. Speaking of free, the movies are also expected to remain on Disney+ while they play in theaters.

Pixar’s Soul, Luca and Turning Red — which bypassed the big screen and went straight to Disney+ because of the pandemic — will play in theaters for the first time, Disney announced Wednesday.
Soul, Pete Docter’s Oscar-winning 2020 animated film about a middle-school band teacher who is transported to the “Great Before,” will be released in cinemas on Jan. 12. Turning Red, Domee Shi’s 2022 Oscar-nominated movie about a teen who turns into a red panda, debuts Feb. 9, followed by Enrico Casarosa’s Oscar-nominated sea monster story Luca on March 22.
Luca will be paired with Pixar’s classic short For the Birds (2000), which won an Oscar for best animated short. Soul will be preceded by Pixar’s Oscar-nominated 2020 SparkShort Burrow; and Turning Red, with Academy-Award-nominated 2019 SparkShort Kitbull.
Pixar’s first post-pandemic theatrical release was Lightyear in 2022, followed by last spring’s Elemental.

It has been an odd year for Disney at the box office. The studio has had more misfires than it has had successes — and even some of those successes were pretty muted. "Elemental" is perhaps the prime example as Pixar's latest seemed straight-up doomed on arrival before having a miraculous turnaround, leading it to a $496 million worldwide take against a $200 million budget. Most of the studio's other big-budget films haven't been quite as lucky. To illustrate that point, James Cameron's "Avatar: The Way of Water" actually remains one of the studio's highest-grossing movies of 2023 despite the fact that it was released in 2022.
"The Way of Water" hit theaters on December 16, 2022, capping off a 13-year journey for the sequel. It made a ridiculous amount of money before the calendar rolled over to 2023 and ultimately wound up as the third biggest movie of all time with $2.32 billion to its name,...

Pixar is working away on Toy Story 5 – although even Tim Allen wonders if five may be too many…
It was earlier in the year that Disney boss, Bob Iger, decided to offset some of the company’s problems by announcing a raft of sequels to the firm’s megahits. Those films? Frozen 3, Zootropolis 2 and – yep – Toy Story 5.
It was back in 2019 that the Toy Story saga appeared to have come to an end at Pixar, with the just-about-got-away-with-it Toy Story 4. Realistically, Toy Story 3 was the perfect ending to the trilogy, but the fourth film had enough in the tank, and certainly enough in the bank. Spin-off movie Lightyear fell to Earth in the summer of 2022.
When Iger announced Toy Story 5 though, there was some suspicion as to whether the lead voices – Tom Hanks and Tim Allen – would be persuaded to return to voice Woody and Buzz again.

‘Toy Story 5’ Update: Tim Allen Says Disney Has Reached Out To Him & Tom Hanks About Reprising Roles
Tim Allen is opening up about the new Toy Story sequel Bob Iger confirmed earlier this year.
Allen, who has voiced Buzz Lightyear in the past four animated featured films said that the studio has reached out to him and co-star Tom Hanks, who voices Woody, to return.
“Bob Iger, head of Disney, said it was on,” Allen said while making an appearance on The Tonight Show Tuesday night. “He actually said it was going to happen. They have reached out to Tom and I to reprise the roles. They’re not saying anything about it.”
However, Allen questions about returning to the animated franchise.
“For people like me, it’s just like — I’m a sci-fi buff. You wonder if four was too many, is five too much? According to the scuttlebutts, the writer that’s doing it wrote one of the better ones and he said, ‘If I didn’t get this right,...

Disney CEO Bob Iger announced in February that a new “Toy Story” movie was in development, along with new installments in the “Frozen” and “Zootopia” franchises. No further details were provided at the time, but it appears the new “Toy Story” movie will not be another tangentially-related spinoff like “Lightyear,” but a return to the core story centered on Woody and Buzz.
Tim Allen appeared on “The Tonight Show” ahead of Thanksgiving and confirmed both he and Tom Hanks have been contacted by Disney for what sounds like “Toy Story 5.” The actor said “one of the creators of the original series” is behind the film’s script, although he wouldn’t reveal who at this time.

Please keep your hands and feet inside the cart at all times as we prepare to ride another roller coaster of emotions with Pixar‘s Inside Out 2! Debuting the day after the actors’ guild reached a tentative agreement to end the ongoing actors’ strike, an Inside Out 2 teaser trailer reminds audiences how much the 2015 animated original added to their therapy bills.
Amy Poehler (Joy), Phyllis Smith (Sadness), Mindy Kaling (Disgust), Bill Hader (Fear), and Lewis Black (Anger) played the emotions in 2015’s Inside Out. However, Hader and Kaling won’t be returning for the sequel, with Tony Hale and Liza Lapira replacing them, respectively. The Inside Out 2 teaser introduces a new emotion to the mix, Anxiety, voiced by Stranger Things and Asteroid City star Maya Hawke. The first film revolves around 11-year-old Riley (Kaitlyn Dias) and the five emotions creating whirlwinds inside her developing brain.

The release delays just keep coming: a week and some change after news broke that "Deadpool 3" will likely not make its original release date, Disney has officially announced that several other major 2024 titles will be shifted to later dates. Among them are the extraterrestrial Pixar flick "Elio" and Disney's latest live-action effort, "Snow White." Meanwhile, the Jonathan Majors-led Sundance thriller "Magazine Dreams" has been removed from the release schedule entirely -- two days after the actor was told he'll have to stand trial for domestic abuse charges. Two untitled Disney projects and one untitled Pixar project have also been shuffled around, with a February 2024 release moving to April and two 2025 releases falling off the schedule completely.
Both "Elio" and "Disney's Snow White" are being pushed back a whole calendar year, with the former making the jump from March 1, 2024 to June 13, 2025 and the latter no longer set to be...

When you think about where to head for Halloween favorites, Disney+ probably doesn’t immediately spring to mind. Amanda Nell Eu, director of breakout film “Tiger Stripes,” has disowned the censored version of the movie that launched in her native Malaysia on Thursday.
“I do not stand behind the cut that will be shown in local cinemas […] the film that will be shown in local cinemas is not the film that we made, and it is not the film that won the Grand Prize of the Critics Week in Cannes,” said Eu in a statement (see below for full letter).
The debut feature had received wide acclaim as the first Malaysian film in many years to play in Cannes, the first by a Malaysian woman director. It won a prize as best picture in Cannes Critics’ Week sidebar, will be the opening film of the Singapore International Film Festival and has been selected as Malaysia’s Oscar contender.

"What if [X] had emotions?" It's a template Pixar used to massive success with "Toy Story" and has returned to time and time again ever since. It was probably inevitable then that the studio would make a film with the premise, "What if emotions had emotions?" The result was 2015's "Inside Out," and you know what? It's pretty damn great, too.
Pixar's animated hit examines the inner workings of the mind of Riley, an 11-year-old hockey-loving girl whose world is completely upended after her family moves across the U.S. from Minnesota to San Francisco. There’s a whole roster of actors that went through the Marvel Cinematic Universe so far. Some of them became worldwide-known stars thanks to their MCU roles. One of them is Chris Evans, who rose to fame thanks to the role of Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, which he played between 2011 and 2019. It’s not that Evans wasn’t known before he played Captain America, but if you show Evans’ picture to anyone and ask them to guess who he is, a good amount of people will tell you: “That’s the guy that played Captain America.”
Evans started his career in the early 2000s by starring in teen movies. In 2005, he gained attention for his role as Johnny Storm, aka Human Torch, in Fox’s ‘Fantastic Four’ movie and its sequel ‘Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer’ in 2007. Disney/Pixar’s “Elemental” is continuing its rebound from the worst opening weekend in Pixar history on streaming, as the studio reported Monday that the animated film drew 26.4 million views worldwide in its first five days on Disney+.
That’s enough to make “Elemental” the most watched film on Disney’s streaming service in its opening week this year, and the most viewed animated movie premiere on Disney+ since Pixar’s “Turning Red” premiered exclusively on the service in March 2022.
Directed by Peter Sohn, “Elemental” first seemed doomed to be another box office bomb akin to Pixar’s 2022 bust “Lightyear” after it suffered the worst opening weekend in studio history with $29.6 million grossed in North America back in June. A lack of widespread prerelease interest among moviegoers, combined with mixed reviews at its Cannes Film Festival premiere, were likely to blame for the bad start.

GLAAD has released the 11th installment of its Studio Responsibility Index, an annual study that tracks “the quantity, quality and diversity” of LGBTQ characters in films released in a calendar year by 10 Hollywood distributors.
The results found that of 350 titles released in 2022, 100 films, or 28.5 percent, featured an LGBTQ character, marking the highest number recorded in the time GLAAD has conducted the study. It should be noted, however, that in today’s peak content landscape, the number of films tracked has also increased, per GLAAD.
In those 100 films, there were 292 LGBTQ characters including 117, or 40 percent, characters of color. Of the 292, 163 were men, 119 women and 10 nonbinary. Seven of the women characters and six of the men were transgender. The showings marked a record number of nonbinary characters. Also a record: 12 of 350 films included a transgender character. Eleven LGBTQ characters were counted with a disability, also a high.

The box set features early classics like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, and Peter Pan, 1990s renaissance films like Aladdin, The Lion King, and Toy Story, and more modern offerings — many of which got the direct-to-Disney+ treatment thanks to Covid — including Soul,...

Disney/PIxar’s Elemental was a sleeper hit at the summer box office, dismissed early on after a so-so opening weekend but then proving it had legs by racking up $480 million globally. As such, it stands among 2023’s Top 10-grossing films worldwide.
The original animated film will soon begin streaming on Disney+ — alongside the making-of documentary Good Chemistry: The Story of Elemental as well as the Pixar Animation Studios’ short Carl’s Date, featuring Up‘s talking dog Dug.

Amid a mixed earnings report for the third quarter of 2023, Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger announced plans Wednesday to reduce both the quantity and cost of upcoming motion pictures. This echoed earlier sentiments made during previous earnings calls when Iger pledged to offer more creative control for artists in exchange for reining in production costs.
“Looking to Disney’s entertainment studios, we’re focused on improving the quality of our films, and on better economics, not just reducing the number of titles we release, but also the cost per title,” Iger said at the start of the earnings call.
Predecessor Bob Chapek, who took over just before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, infamously sent Pixar movies straight to Disney+ instead of theaters. Disney over the last year has been less aggressive about throwing theatrical releases into the streaming sandbox quite as quickly, giving titles like “The Little Mermaid” and...

The Walt Disney Company reported mixed results for its third quarter of 2023 on Wednesday, with net income of $2.65 billion, or adjusted earnings of $1.03 per share without certain items, on revenue of $22.3 billion. It had a net loss of $134 million, or 25 cents per share on a diluted basis.
Analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research were expecting adjusted earnings of 99 cents per share on revenue of $22.4 billion.
The direct-to-consumer division saw revenue increase 9% year over year to $5.5 billion and its operating loss narrow to $512 million from $1.1 billion a year ago. The decrease in operating loss was due to a lower loss at Disney+, higher operating income at Hulu and a lower loss at ESPN+.
Disney+ reported a total of 105.7 million core subscribers, including 46 million in the U.S. and Canada, down 300,00o year over year, and 59.7 million international subscribers excluding Disney+ Hotstar, an increase of 1.1 million. Total Disney+ Hotstar subscribers fell to...

The elements are finally coming together for Pixar’s “Elemental,” which is enjoying a rebound after a spark-less start at the box office.
The animation adventure stumbled in its debut with $29.5 million domestically and $44.5 million globally, by far the worst opening weekend in Pixar’s 28-year history. Yet two months later, its ticket sales have slowly and steadily climbed to $148 million in North America and $425 million worldwide. That’s nearly five times its initial ticket sales, a rare multiple for an original film. Set in a world inhabited by anthropomorphic elements of nature, the Peter Sohn-directed “Elemental” revolves around two fire and water elements who discover they have more in common than meets the eye.
“Elemental” cost $200 million before marketing — which included a lavish trip to the Cannes Film Festival for its global premiere — so even though audiences kept showing up after opening weekend, the family friendly movie has...

When it earned the worst opening weekend in studio history it seemed like “Elemental” was a sign that Pixar had lost the magic touch that made it a cornerstone of Disney’s box office dominance for years.
But over the past two months, “Elemental” has quietly won over audiences worldwide and steamed along to a $423 million total through this past Sunday, with $148 million coming from North America. While still not a theatrical hit, director Peter Sohn’s romantic tale is no longer the “Lightyear”-esque flop it once appeared destined to become, and has shown that Pixar is not as far off from returning to its past form as it seemed.
“It’s rare for any sort of film to earn a 5-times multiple in this box office,” Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian told TheWrap, noting how the film went from an anemic $29.6 million domestic opening to an overall domestic total of nearly $150 million.
