European TV production giant Banijay (Peaky Blinders, Black Mirror, MasterChef, Survivor) reported lower first-quarter 2024 revenue, Amsterdam stock exchange-listed parent company Fl Entertainment Group disclosed on Wednesday. The parent also unveiled a rebranding that changes its name to Banijay Group, effective immediately.
The total rebranded Banijay Group’s quarterly revenue hit $1.0 billion euro ($1.1 billion), up 10.6 percent over the year-ago period. But content production revenue was down 2.3 percent assuming constant currencies, and distribution revenue was down 12.5 percent on the same basis at the company’s Paris-headquartered powerhouse Banijay media and entertainment business, led by CEO Marco Bassetti and chairman Stéphane Courbit. Including live experiences division Banijay Live, revenue here was up 3.1 percent, “reflecting amplified seasonality of major scripted show deliveries and revenue recognition towards fourth quarter 2024 compared to 2023.”
Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (Ebitda) for the total group jumped 11.2 percent to 164 million euro ($178 million).

Exclusive: After landing the villain role in Ryan Coogler’s next project, Jack O’Connell continues to fill out his dance card. Sources tell Deadline that he is set to join the cast of 28 Years Later, a sequel to 2002’s 28 Days Later. Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Ralph Fiennes also star in the pic, which is part of a planned trilogy.
Danny Boyle is directing the first movie from a script by Alex Garland. Sony will release the film in theaters globally.
While plot details are vague, the original 28 Days Later, directed by Boyle, written by Garland and released in 2002, centered on a bicycle courier (played by Cillian Murphy) who wakes from a coma to discover the world had been overrun with zombies following the outbreak of a virus. The pic grossed more than $82 million worldwide and led to the 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later, on which Boyle and Garland served solely as EPs.

In “Back to Black,” Jack O’Connell’s Blake Fielder-Civil comes into the life of Amy Winehouse — played by an exceptional Marisa Abela — with seductive bravado, sweeping the singer off her feet on their first meeting in a London pub thanks to, among other things, a lip-synced rendition of the Shangri-La’s “Leader of the Pack”.
As the divisive biopic, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and released in the U.K. by StudioCanal this Friday (and in the U.S. by Focus Features on May 17), agonizingly portrays, the smitten pair quickly descend into violent self-destruction — a “toxic co-dependency” as Fielder-Civil later describes it in the film — fueled by alcoholism and drug abuse.
Many may question the ethics of picking at a tragic story that was heavily chronicled and sensationalized by the media in real-time during Winehouse’s final years. But for anyone who’s been tracking O’Connell’s career, the opportunity to...

Exclusive: Jack O’Connell (Ferrari) is in talks to star opposite Michael B. Jordan in Ryan Coogler’s untitled event film for Warner Bros, sources tell Deadline.
While both the plot of the film and O’Connell’s role remain under wraps, we’re told it’s a period genre pic in which he’ll be playing the villain. Deadline was first to tell you about Warners’ acquisition of the project, following a heated bidding war.
The film brings Jordan and Coogler together following their collaboration on the Creed and Black Panther franchises, having first worked together on the acclaimed Sundance pic Fruitvale Station. It’s also the second project from the collaborators that Warner Bros Film Group co-chairs and CEOs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy have championed, after greenlighting the box office hit Creed III during their time at MGM.
Coogler is writing and will also produce alongside Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian.

Amazon is looking to increase the amount of streaming ads it offers, and its streaming platform MGM+ could be next to see ads invade its interface.
As streaming services go, MGM+ tends to skate under the radar a bit. The streamer is owned by Amazon, but is typically an afterthought when discussing that company’s other streaming platforms like Prime Video, Freevee and even Twitch. In fact, during Amazon’s conference call with Wall Street analysts to discuss its quarterly earnings report, MGM+ was not even mentioned by Amazon executives. Nevertheless, subscribers would be smart to anticipate big changes to the streamer in the near future, specifically in its decision to thus far not to include ads on the platform.
Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky told analysts his company wants to increase advertising in its streaming properties. Prime Video converted all customers to ad-supported unless they pay to go ad-free on Jan.

Sky and Starz have released a first-look teaser trailer for the spectacular and unapologetic limited event series, ‘Mary & George,’ starring Academy Award and BAFTA-winning actor Julianne Moore alongside Nicholas Galitzine.
is inspired by the outrageous true story of Mary Villiers, who moulded her beautiful and charismatic son, George, to seduce King James VI of Scotland and I of England (Tony Curran) and become his all-powerful lover.
Through outrageous scheming, the pair rose from humble beginnings to become the richest, most titled and influential players the English court had ever seen, and the King’s most trusted advisors.
And with England’s place on the world stage under threat from a Spanish invasion and rioters taking to the streets to denounce the King, the stakes could not have been higher.
Prepared to stop at nothing and armed with her ruthless political steel, Mary married her way up the ranks, bribed politicians,...

Almost seven years to the day since it began, we’re about to give a royal wave of farewell to Netflix drama The Crown, but series six might be its most eye-opening yet, as its first part (out on November 16) deals with the events surrounding the tragic death of Princess Diana.
Some critics’ hackles might be up already after the show previously attracted condemnation for historical inaccuracies, so it will be especially interesting to see how the show covers such an emotive and important event in royal history, and just where the story ends when the final episodes are released on 14th December.
Even so, many fans will be disappointed not to see more recent events get The Crown treatment, like that Prince Andrew interview and Harry and Meghan’s very public royal uncoupling, but is it so far beyond the realms of possibility that the show might have a...

Warning: contains spoilers for Sex Education seasons 1-4
The first series of Netflix teen drama Sex Education came out so long ago – in January 2019, pre-Covid, aka The Before Times – that it’s hard to remember a baby Otis and Eric turning up at their first day of sixth form. But even on day one, Ncuti Gatwa as Eric foreshadowed just how big a journey the characters would go on throughout the show’s four series, telling Otis (Asa Butterfield): “We shall transform from lowly caterpillars into… awesome killer whales?”
Back then, Eric was one of the only two gay people in his year, and he was constantly bullied, literally being pushed up against the lockers and called a “f**” in the first episode, as if the show was trying to win a full house in Stereotypical High School Drama Bingo. Later in the series, he’s the victim of a drive-by gay bashing,...

Fly on the wall? Pah! The wall is all the way over there! These days, viewers want to be flies buzzing right around the noses of the people making the headlines, close enough to tell what they had for breakfast. And thanks to true story TV dramas, they can.
It’s been a long time since ropey Lifetime Movies were as good as it got for true story TV. In recent years, British production companies have stepped up in a big way to serve a growing appetite for fact-based drama, but all too often the real-life TV dramas of today focus on haunting tales of history’s most gruesome murders. If you’re sick of serial killers, there are plenty of non-murder true stories to enjoy in drama form, from very public scandals to ordinary people doing extraordinary things, to the kinds of tragedies it’s important that we never forget.

Prime Video dropped a sneak peek of “Wheel of Time” Season 2 ahead of its release on Sept. 1, which fans can now watch at the end of last season’s finale.
According to the Amazon-owned streamer, the special look “reflects the structure of the best-selling and epic “The Wheel of Time” book series by Robert Jordan,” in which he would add the first chapter of the next book as a preview.
The scene, which opens the first episode of the second season, is an adaptation of the fan favorite “Darkfriend Social” prologue of the second novel of Jordan’s series, “The Great Hunt,” upon which “Wheel of Time” Season 2 is largely based. It’s also based on some elements of Jordan’s third novel, “The Dragon Reborn.”

As filming for “Grantchester” Season 9 is officially underway, star Tom Brittney has revealed that it will be his last. The actor, who has portrayed Reverend Will Davenport since 2019, will exit the PBS and ITV series to focus on new projects.
“I’ve had the most incredible time playing Will Davenport for the last five years. I got to solve crimes with my best friend, and work with the best cast and crew I could ever ask for,” Brittney said in a statement. “I’ll miss it more than anything. But it’s time for the baton to be passed, as it once was to me.”
In addition to Brittney’s departure, Rishi Nair is joining the show’s cast as the new vicar, Alphy Kotteram.

Seven weeks after joining a company, most senior executives would be expected to have sat down with everyone they’ll be working with. Banijay — the TV behemoth behind shows such as Peaky Blinders, Survivor, Black Mirror, Sas Rogue Heroes, Marie Antoinette, Masterchef, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Big Brother and many, many more — isn’t your average company, as its new global head of scripted Christian Wikander has quickly discovered.
Thanks to an acquisitions drive that didn’t stop after its $2.2 billion purchase of Endemol Shine closed mid-2020 — Banijay now has a roster of more than 60 labels working in scripted on its books, and from all corners of the globe. Seven weeks into the job, it’s impressive that Wikander has even managed to have face-to-face time with more than half.
