- Huckleberry Finn: [narrating] Now... you'd think bein' so rich would make a fellow as happy as a flea on a shaggy dog, but the Widow Douglas and Miss Watson took me in, started civilizing me until I was so durn miserable I'd have run off, right then, 'cept for Tom. He hooked me into stayin' by starting up a high-class robbery gang.
- Miss Watson: [about Huck] And if there's a way to keep shoes on him, I don't know it.
- Widow Douglas: He hates shoes. He says they strangle his feet.
- [laughs]
- Huckleberry Finn: I liked it better the old way.
- Tom Sawyer: Oh, you'll get used to it.
- Huckleberry Finn: Can't say that I want to, Tom. Pretty soon I'm gonna forget what the free air smells like.
- Huckleberry Finn: [narrating] I woke up feeling like a used piece of chewin' tobbacee. But I knew one thing: I had to get outta there before Pap came back.
- Judge Thatcher: [to Pap Finn] You forfeited your rights as a natural father when you deserted the child. You're lucky you're not in jail! Myself, I think running off was the only kindness you ever did for Huck.
