Worth it for Ken's Rap

Warning: Spoilers
A lot of great dialogue and a fun view of Dundee Scotland. But when you end up at the banquet admidst all the diabolical scheming we end up with a comical rapping by Kendall on the life of his father. Priceless!

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. People might have found the final sequence to be cringeworthy and out of character, but Kendall has been written as a character that swings between manic and depressive episodes and we didn't see him do any coke in this episode, so it may have been indicative of bipolar disorder. Or maybe he just really loves his Dad and wanted to worship him in a unique way. That's the great thing about high art, it's ambiguous.

Everyone has been stellar, of course the show stealer being Logan Roy. Brian Cox's nuanced performance all throughout this second season has been phenomenal. I especially love the scene when he arrives at his surprise party and then immediately walks out, classic. Shiv and Greg were fantastic too. I'm glad to see Marcia being given a bit more latitude in this episode, I'd love to see more of her - in season one when she stopped the Roy children from seeing Logan when he was sick, it made me think that she was up to something. More of that please. Also wondering when Logan's illness will catch up with him, he's been quite healthy throughout this season.

This is such a high level of drama. Old English, Shakespearean school.

Outstanding

S2 of Succession gets better and better and this episode had everything. Deep psychology set in Kengo Kuma's Dundee Design Museum. A nautical themed architectural masterwork evoking the cruise ship scandal seemingly about to wreck Waystar. Awkwardness and intrigue in collision. Magnificent.

Why no love for Kendall's rap?
Galtwotwenty14 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I'm only writing this review because I was so surprised to see people didn't like Kendall's rap song. First of all, to say it is not in character with what we know of him is incorrect. In the very first episode of Season 1, so the very first scene we have of this series which is now in it's 3rd season opens on Kendal listening to rap music while he pumps his fists into the back of the front seat of the limo as he gets himself pumped up for the meeting with Vaulter. There are 2 more scenes which I cant remember as clearly with Kendall listening to rap - one while exercising. He has been tormented in S2 but with the introduction of the actress in this episode, he seems to be back to his old self and so it did not seem out of character to me at all. And then there is the fact of the rap song itself, I couldn't believe how clever it was! OG meaning Original Gangsta - A beautiful play on words. I loved it!

Outside of the main plot, I have been bingeing this series for the little nuggets of side plots which I am dieing for more of: Greg's covert antics (who was that group of friends he has over anyway?) Marcia's long game (she has made some comments this season that need to be revisited about plans that she/Logan have made for the future and the way she inserted her son into the empire without telling Logan.. What exactly is the story about Rose the sister that died? And then the whole Gerri/Roman thing. What an inspired piece of script writing, whatever mind came up with that dynamic I am in love with your brain it is so wierd yet reads so true and it maybe that only Keiran and the actress playing Gerri are the only actors alive who could carry out that dynamic in a way that doesnt seem manufactured. Her facial expressions and the way she reacts to him are exquisite

On another note.

Episode 8: A brilliant and deep episode. It gets better and better, the quality in the production, the setting, the logistics, the acting of course and all the nuances and subtlety that make each episode unique; and this one was no exception, adding its marvelous fragrance to the already spiced-up blend of the show.

By the way, Kendall rocked with his rapping.

Epic one with great dialogue and several delightful bits!
UniqueParticle30 September 2019
Continuously enjoyable, I've grown to love the cast more and more as it goes on. I respect the writing crew so much and I'm quite shocked there wasn't more Emmy nods recently! Regardless though, very pleased with this one. Cool how there's a fun surprise scene halfway in.

Slow at first but it PICKED UP

Warning: Spoilers
[Edit: on rewatch this is the most underrated episode, I don't even think it's slow anymore. Just brilliant ride from front to back] First half of the episode was nice but a little slow paced. But the second-half is just packed with a ton of things to appreciate. First off, Kendall rapping is the cringiest thing I have ever seen but in such a delightful way. Shiv's plan rolling out to take down Rhea is brilliantly written and probably my favorite part of the entire episode. And as always, the dialogue is hilarious and engaging.

Watching the World Decay

I really like brother, played by James Cromwell, one of the most stellar actors of my lifetime. Logan goes to Scotland where an incredible birthday party has been planned for him. He begins to tear down the foundations that have held him up in spite of himself. There are more secret meetings because there are forces outside that could ruin things. Greg, an interesting character, is worried about his inheritance. Kendall hooks up with a beautiful young woman, but it always gets back to his inability to keep his father out every conversation. Logan is also being promiscuous and abandoning his wife who has aided him and helped him along the way.

Loved it...but
mrbradg12 October 2019
The only thing I disliked about this episode is the last 10 mins. It seemed rushed and a little off. I can see there was different writers for this one and not sure if that played a part.

Great episode apart from one thing
DanialAbufarha2 November 2020
One of the best episodes of Succession, no doubt. However, one thing I enjoyed yet at the same time did not particularly like was Kendall rapping near the end of the episode. I dunno about the rest of you but to me it seemed a bit out of character.

A change from the usual 'Succession' formula.
bayleykedar18 November 2021
There are quite a few things I enjoyed with this one. For starters, the comedy felt on point, Logan returning to his hometown as a bitter old man gave me shades of Bruce Dern in 'Nebraska', a hilarious yet touching comedy-drama from a few years back.

There are jokes, scheming from the Roy children (which is fairly fun to watch) and even a particularly uncomfortable rap from Kendall during the episode's climax.

But interspersed amongst this are real elements of drama that are continuing to build up. The dynamic between Greg and Ewan, leading into the bathroom speech delivered by Logan. The final words Ewan says during this episode. Shiv's scheme to dispose of her enemy. It is a mixed bag, one that relieves some elements of dramatic tension whilst not completely derailing the entire story.

It, again, feels like a developing episode, but Succession is arguably the best TV show I've seen in a long while for keeping these types of episodes fresh and interesting.

A legacy ruining episode
alismmka11 October 2021
Short story is this has become my favourite show of all time, every single episode as good as the last then we get to this one and something immediately feels off; characters act like caricatures of themselves, dumber dialogue and plot changing moments that are wasted due to terrible execution, as someone who binge watched for 3 days this was the one episode that made me stop watching it took me a week to finish and i was wishing i could skip it but forced to watch it so i wouldn't miss the plot.

Plus that rap at the end was the most embarrassing thing i've seen in my entire life cringe doesn't begin to describe it.

1/10 episode in a 10/10 show.
