Earlier this month, it was announced that Platinum Dunes, the production company headed up by Michael Bay and Bradley Fuller, are teaming up with director Jonathan Liebesman – who they previously worked with on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning and their 2014 version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – to make a werewolf movie called Wolf Night. Now Deadline reports that Wolf Night has found a home at Sony’s Screen Gems.
Michael Bitar is overseeing the project for Screen Gems, while Alex Ginno does the same for Platinum Dunes.
Screen Gems has put out a whole lot of horror movies over the years, with titles including Don’t Breathe, Resident Evil, Underworld, Deliver Us from Evil, The Grudge, Carrie, The Stepfather, Prom Night, The Pope’s Exorcist, Insidious: The Red Door, and the upcoming Tarot. They recently secured a first-look deal with Gary Dauberman, who worked on the...

The folks at Platinum Dunes, the production company headed up by Michael Bay and Bradley Fuller, clearly love working with director Jonathan Liebesman. After working with Liebesman on the Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning, they had him attached to direct their reboot of Friday the 13th for a while – and even though Liebesman wasn’t at the helm of that one by the time it went into production, they did work with him again, on their 2014 version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Now, a decade later, Platinum Dunes and Jonathan Liebesman are re-teaming for a werewolf movie called Wolf Night.
Deadline wasn’t able to dig up much information on Wolf Night, but they did learn that the project is being described as “District 9 by way of The Purge“. Will Honley, whose writing credits include Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, wrote the screenplay with April Maguire.

Vanessa Morgan isn’t saying goodbye to The CW any time soon. After spending over six years portraying Southside Serpent Toni Topaz on the network’s quirky Archie Comics-inspired teen drama Riverdale, the actress has found a home on a new CW series: Wild Cards.
The Canadian-American series, which is co-produced with CBS and currently airs weekly, is part crime-solving procedural, part comedy, and part will-they/won’t-they? romance. Morgan stars as Max Mitchell, a clever and charismatic con artist who teams up with no-nonsense cop Cole Ellis (Giacomo Gianniotti) to solve crimes in exchange for staying out of jail.
At the 2024 Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour, Morgan — who’s previously appeared on shows like Finding Carter, Degrassi: The Next Generation, A.N.T. The much-anticipated movie Dune: Part Two, starring Austin Butler, has had the internet going bonkers over the last few months. Following his Oscar-nominated performance in Elvis, Austin Butler is set to awe us again in the role of Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen in the upcoming Dune sequel, which opens in theaters on March 1. The world has been observing Butler since his incredible performance in the 2022 biographical drama Elvis. There is no denying that his acting career has advanced significantly.
As we all know, losing a loved one is never easy, and for Butler, the timing could not have been more heartbreaking. In retrospect, the California-born actor once said that he used to “go home and cry” after working on a TV show. As Butler was coming to terms with his mother’s unexpected death in 2014, he had to fly to New Zealand to start filming The Shannara Chronicles.

While the empty rounds click away, memories of wild animal attacks, run-ins with an impulsive police officer, a down-to-earth arms dealer, and his ex-lover come flooding back. Austin Butler is clearing the air about the time he referred to his former longtime girlfriend Vanessa Hudgens as a “friend,” which many people felt minimized their nine-year-long relationship.
During The Hollywood Reporter’s 2023 Actor Roundtable — which featured last year’s awards season’s leading men including Butler, Colin Farrell, Brendan Fraser, Jeremy Pope, Ke Huy Quan and Adam Sandler — the Elvis actor was asked if he always wanted to play the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. He responded with an anecdote, saying his “friend” had told him he should do it one day.
“The month before I heard that Baz [Luhrmann] was making the movie, I was going to look at Christmas lights with a friend, and there was an Elvis Christmas song on the radio, and I was singing along, and my friend looked over at me and goes, ‘You’ve got to play Elvis,'” he recalled. “I said,...

The Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg-produced World War II series Masters of the Air has something that its predecessors did not: a bona fide movie star in the lead role. Thanks to his award-winning role as the King himself in 2022’s Elvis, Austin Butler has burst onto the scene as a major acting force. And he brings that gravitas with him to portray Gale “Buck” Cleven in the nine-episode Apple TV+ series about WWII bomber pilots.
Cleven is the perfect role for the brooding Butler – a quiet, confident figure that the rest of his crew looks up to. Cleven also serves as the culmination of years of work for the actor just as much as the Elvis Presley gig did. As a teen, Butler made the Disney and Nickelodeon TV show circuit via a mix of one-off and recurring roles on Zoey 101, Hannah Montana, iCarly, Wizards of Waverly Place,...

Wednesday showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar remember vividly the unusual circumstances of their first conversation with Tim Burton. The filmmaker, who they hoped they could convince to join their show, was piping in from a garden full of “life-size” dinosaur models at his U.K. home. “He was wandering around his dinosaur garden talking to us on FaceTime about his love of Wednesday Addams, and the idea that the script spoke to him in terms of being the ultimate outsider,” remembers Millar of this virtual meeting in 2020 with Burton. Just a week before, the duo were doubtful Burton would even meet with them. They had already written the entire season with the help of a pandemic-era virtual writers room, but wanted Burton’s expertise and special touches. “We were told by everyone, ‘Tim’s never done television. We don’t even know if he’ll read it,’ ” recalls Gough.

Grillo-Marxuach, who is described in Maureen Ryan’s Hollywood book as “the only person from the show’s original nucleus of writers still in the writers room in season two,” posted his own essay that he hopes will deter “future abusers.”
“If Lost is so great a work of art as to continue to be a topic of discussion after all these years, then it is cruel to expect those of us who were there to remain silent as to how the show was made,” Grillo-Marxuach blogged. “Lost succeeded because of the sustained contribution of many, many artists, many of them geniuses in their own right, and many of whom were treated quite badly and then...

Amid broad cost-cutting moves, Meta is shuttering the Facebook Watch originals group, whose small slate of shows included the hit “Red Table Talk” hosted by Jada Pinkett Smith, Variety has confirmed.
A Meta representative confirmed that the company is shuttering its originals group but declined to provide further comment. The news was first reported by Deadline.
With the shutdown of Facebook Watch originals, Mina Lefevre, head of development and programing for the group, is leaving the company. Lefevre joined Meta (then called Facebook) in 2017, after serving as MTV’s head of scripted development. At Meta, Lefevre reported to Ricky Van Veen, VP of creative strategy.
Lefevre’s exit comes as Meta is cutting 10,000 jobs across the company, coming after it laid off 11,000 staffers at the end of 2022. On Wednesday, Meta announced first-quarter 2023 earnings that beat Wall Street expectations, as its revenue grew 3% for the period.

Austin Butler has a little less conversation and a little more mask-wearing in the first promo for his Saturday Night Live hosting debut.
The Elvis star, who continues to play a key part in this year’s awards season, takes center stage at Studio 8H in the promotional footage released ahead of his Dec. 17 holiday episode, which is also the NBC comedy series’ final new installment of 2022. Lizzo is the night’s musical guest and will be stepping in for previously announced performers the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, who need to skip due to illness.

After his turn as menacing Manson cultist Tex Watson in Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Austin Butler was rising fast with Hollywood casting directors. The Broadway community took note of his performance opposite Denzel Washington in the 2018 “The Iceman Cometh.”
But no one was prepared for his star power that broke out of Baz Luhrmann’s musical biopic “Elvis” (Warner Bros.). Before the movie opened last June, Luhrmann and others were nervous about the younger-audience interest in the King of Rock ‘n Roll, who died in 1977. As it turned out, young moviegoers helped boost the movie to over 286 million worldwide — thanks to Butler.
The California-born actor’s “Elvis” origin myth is well-established: the obsessive prep before Butler landed the role over Harry Styles and Miles Teller, sending a video of himself crying over the loss of his mother as he sang “Unchained Melody,” learning how to croon as Young Elvis,...

Wednesday Addams has always been a walking rain cloud. The Addams family's only daughter was prone to strange and macabre humor long before Jenna Ortega took on the role of the raven-haired goth teen in Netflix's new series "Wednesday." Back in 1944, when Charles Addams' original "The Addams Family" cartoons appeared in "The New Yorker," one featured a punchline in which mother Morticia encouraged her daughter to commit attempted murder. "Well don't come whining to me," she tells her presumably bullied daughter. "Go tell him you'll poison him right back."
When she first made the leap from the funny pages to the TV screen, Wednesday was just as morbid as ever, albeit also adorable as embodied by child actor Lisa Loring. In the 1960s "Addams Family" series, pint-sized Wednesday plays with explosives and a guillotine, while in the '90s, Christina Ricci's version of the character straps her brother...

If Hell is a teenage girl (as Diablo Cody once observed), then the title character in "Wednesday" is about as ordinary as high schoolers come.
Created by "Smallville" and "The Shannara Chronicles" duo Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the upcoming Netflix series casts Jenna Ortega as Wednesday, the infamously stone-faced, mayhem-loving daughter of Addams Family heads Gomez (Luis Guzmán) and Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones). It's a role that was originated in live-action by Lisa Loring, who was only six years old when she first played the Addams' ghoulish offspring on the 1960s sitcom "The Addams Family" (inspired by Charles Addams' satirically warped single-panel comics for The New Yorker). Most of the "Addams Family" movies and TV shows produced since then have similarly depicted Wednesday as a darkly comical spin on the evil kid trope established by films like "The Omen."

From the Top Gun and Jurassic Park sequels to the Toy Story spinoff, the past month at the box office has been one fueled by nostalgia. Now, the nostalgia train continues, not with a sequel or spinoff, but with Elvis, the first feature biopic about the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. As for audiences more in the mood for shivering than shimmying, they can dial into The Black Phone, the latest from horror practitioner Scott Derrickson. While neither film is expected to top the charts, the month is still ending on a positive note as the top four titles this weekend should all come in above 20 million, which would be the first time for this to happen since November 2018.

Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment has bought the assets of Sonar Entertainment, the well-established production entity built by Robert Halmi Sr.
The up-front cost is just $19.5 million, but the ultimate valuation will likely grow over time, as future licensing proceeds will also be split with Sonar. The initial payment is considered an advance, which will be recouped by Chicken Soup upon the sale or licensing of certain TV rights. About $1 billion has been invested into film and TV projects controlled by Sonar, according to the official deal announcement. Among the company’s current series are Hunters on Amazon Prime Video and the soon-to-premiere Mysterious Benedict Society on Disney+.
Screen Media, a division of Csse, will distribute Sonar’s library of more than 1,000 titles. Those offerings include Hal Roach Studios shorts like Little Rascals, Laurel & Hardy and Blondie and miniseries like Lonesome Dove and Dinotopia.
The acquisition covers 372 TV series and more than 700 Films.
