Truly Dreadful in Almost Every Way
Dirkmaster27 April 2011
I love bad movies. Heck, I had a blog for years as the Bad Movie King. This, however, even depresses me. Black and white with painted in color for highlights (why? If you were saving money or going for that "Night of the Living Dead" vibe, why colorize features?) Deliveries so bad they really can't be called acting. An Elvis so pathetic you can only tell it's supposed to be the King by having other characters recognize him. A hero that is weak and stupid. Even the supposed 50's music is crap. The gore effect (kinda important in a zombie flick) are sad, but probably would have been worse in color. I see that it's supposed to be a comedy. I'm sure that after a couple more viewings, and a LOT more beers, I could MSTie it properly and make it funny. But do I want to endure this flick again? To paraphrase the tag line, "No, baby".

Zombies Never Looked So Good

I recently saw a DVD of this and thought I was watching a blu-ray it looked so good. Very sharp and the colors in the black & white really pop. A real visual treat. Made me think of what "Pleasantville" would be like if it were overrun with zombies and you were on acid. As for the movie itself, it was a fun, light and somewhat darkly comedic zombie free-for-all with a healthy heaping of gore and more gore. Great 50's music and an all around smokin' soundtrack with some great classical pieces and something that's more of an angry speed metal whenever the zombies storm the screen. I suppose you could call it their "theme music".

Silly, Old-School, Gory Fun

This movie has a lot to owe to EVIL DEAD 2: DEAD BY DAWN with its gleeful amounts of gore and truly slapstick, with one rip-roaring sight gag after another in frenetic shots.

Definitely not for all tastes but for people who like their horror with a nice dose of Tex Avery lunacy, comedy as black as night and tanks of the red stuff -- this is horror comedy par excellence.
