Happy Gilmore and Netflix are ready to hit the links together for a sequel. But Adam Sandler’s original comedy is on the back nine when it comes to streaming.
Sandler is ready to resurrect the character that helped him become a comedy icon. It will be another installment in the actor’s lucrative deal with Netflix, significantly adding to Sandler’s net worth. However, time is limited to catch up with Happy Gilmore on Netflix.

A Happy Gilmore sequel has been greenlit at Netflix, with Adam Sandler returning to star. More details here.
Back in March, there were reports that a sequel to Adam Sandler’s 1996 golf comedy Happy Gilmore had been written, and actor Christopher McDonald had read it. Given the popularity of the film, it seemed to be a question not of if, but when.
We now have the answer, as the sequel has officially been greenlit by Netflix.
The original film, directed by regular collaborator Denis Dugan and written by Sandler and Tim Herlihy, followed Sandler as the titular character, an aspiring ice hockey player who enters a high-profile golfing tournament to earn money to buy his grandmother’s house.
Though his angry outbursts and profane patter initially cause outrage, his skill and tenacity eventually win through in the end. Featuring memorable supporting turns from the much missed Carl Weathers, the imposing...

Magnolia Pictures has released a brand new trailer for "Thelma." This film may not be on your radar just yet, but after watching this trailer, it probably should be. Serving as the feature directorial debut of Josh Margolin, the big hook here is that Oscar-nominee June Squibb is getting to lead a revenge thriller at the age of 94. More than that, it marks the first time that Squibb has been given a leading role in a movie in her long, storied career. Check the trailer out for yourself above.
The trailer is impossibly charming, even though there is an insidious plot at the center of it all. Squibb's character gets scammed out of a bunch of money and, with no options left, she sets out on a path of revenge. It's not unrealistically action-packed or anything like that, but it comes off as quite delightful. Squibb is paired with the late Richard Roundtree,...

Plot: An astronaut realizes that the marriage he left behind might not be waiting for him when he returns to Earth.
Desperate to fix things with his wife, he is helped by a mysterious ancient creature he finds hiding in the bowels of his ship.
Review: It should no longer be surprising when Adam Sandler stars in dramatic roles. When Paul Thomas Anderson’s Punch-Drunk Love was released in 2002, Sandler was best known for films like Big Daddy and Little Nicky. Even though Sandler still releases broad comedies like Hubie Halloween and Murder Mystery, the actor has proven his talents in movies like Uncut Gems and Hustle. Adam Sandler’s latest dramatic project is Spaceman, a science-fiction tale set in the void of the solar system. Partnered with Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan and acclaimed director Johan Renck, Spaceman is another solid performance from Adam Sandler that once again proves how...

Adam Sandler has set a new comedy special at Netflix — this time directed by Josh Safdie.
The project continues Sandler’s string of collaborations with Safie, who co-directed him in 2019’s “Uncut Gems” alongside his brother Benny Safdie. Sandler also starred in the brothers’ 2020 short film “Goldman v. Silverman” and is set to lead an upcoming feature set in the world of sports memorabilia to be directed by Josh and produced by Benny, though the latter told Variety in January that the film was “on pause.”
Currently untitled, the special will be Sandler’s second at Netflix, following up on his 2018 set “100% Fresh” — which went on to receive a 90% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. Sandler has worked on numerous projects for Netflix: In 2023, he led the voice cast of the streamer’s animated musical comedy film “Leo” and starred opposite Idina Menzel in “You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah,...

Oscar-nominated actor June Squibb has joined the voice cast of Pixar’s “Inside Out 2.”
The 94-year-old Squibb last worked with the Disney-owned studio for 2020’s “Soul” and 2019’s “Toy Story 4,” and has lent her voice to other animated projects including “Solar Opposites,” “Ralph Breaks the Internet” and “The Fungies.”
Squibb’s character details are unknown, but she joins an A-list voice cast in the sequel, which hits theaters June 14. Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith and Lewis Black return as Joy, Sadness and Anger, respectively, while Tony Hale and Liza Lapira take over for Bill Hader and Mindy Kaling as Fear and Disgust after reported salary disputes.
The original “Inside Out” (2015) was set inside the mind of a little girl, Riley, whose life is uprooted when her family moves from the Midwest to San Francisco. The animated blockbuster personified emotions as they conflict on how to best navigate Riley through change.

There’s a war going on inside many Adam Sandler movies and the loser is frequently the audience. Sandler may be an innately lovable performer, but his sense of humor is also abrasive and immature. So for every great Sandler comedy like “Happy Gilmore” or the overlooked “Hubie Halloween” — films that strike a satisfying balance between charm and adolescent weirdness — there are also films like “That’s My Boy” and “Jack and Jill,” where our affection for Sandler can’t quite compensate for an overwhelming cavalcade of mean-spirited “jokes” that confuse bullying with whimsy.
But when Sandler delves into the world of family-friendly animation he usually sets aside his vicious streak, so his childish humor and uncomplicated moralizing can shine through. You won’t find much of his immaturity in the “Hotel Transylvania” movies or in his new animated Netflix film “Leo” — which he co-wrote with Robert Smigel and Paul Sado...

Let’s just be honest: being scared isn’t fun. At least, not for everyone. So entering Halloween — aka “spooky season” — can be pretty hard, especially when it comes to finding movies to watch. Well, it’s a good thing you’re here.
Because the thing is, Halloween movies are a core piece of celebrating the holiday. You get together with friends, you break into the candy early, turn off all the lights and get cozy for the night. But if you’re a big ol’ scaredy cat (like this writer is more than secure enough to admit she is), those nights are significantly harder.
So, we went ahead and rounded up 13 of the best Halloween movies that you’ll be guaranteed to still get a good, nightmare-free sleep after.

For a movie that's mostly about how friendships are forever, the 2010 Adam Sandler comedy "Grown Ups" may have had fans wondering about a conspicuously missing face from the sequel. For much of Sandler's career on the big screen, he's been joined by longtime friend and collaborator Rob Schneider. Starting with 1998's "The Waterboy," the two actors have appeared in well over a dozen movies together, from the likes of "Mr. Deeds" and "The Longest Yard" to even an animated movie like "Eight Crazy Nights." Contrary to recent rumors, the bond still seems to be going strong as the two ended up joining forces again in 2017's "Sandy Wexler" and once more in "Hubie Halloween" three years ago. But that hasn't stopped fans from wondering why, after such a prominent role in "Grown Ups," Schneider didn't return for another go-around in "Grown Ups 2."

When Netflix first signed Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions to a four-movie deal in 2014, the reaction was to laugh it off: “Out of left field” and “improbable” were some of the kinder terms used.
The deal, renewed twice since then, has been paying off for Netflix. The latest Sandler movie, “You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah” was the most-streamed movie in the U.S. over Labor Day weekend, according to Whip Media’s Movie Ranker, which uses viewership data from TV Time, its TV show and movie tracking app with more than 26 million global registered users.
Based on the YA novel of the same name, the coming-of-age comedy stars Sandler and his real-life teenage daughter Sunny.
Netflix originally signed Sandler because it noticed how well his movies performed on the service. Skipping theaters might mean missing out on some buzz, but it’s not like Sandler...

Since 1989, Adam Sandler has been one of the busiest men in Hollywood. Not only is he a prolific funnyman on screen, but he's also got his own production company, Happy Madison, that has cranked out over 25 feature films. Sandler inked a lucrative exclusivity deal with Netflix a few years back and has been churning out films for them to varying degrees of success.
Sure, Sandler has made some sophomoric films, and many include questionable casting choices/characterizations that don't hold up in our contemporary culture (like every role Rob Schneider has ever played), but he's also been unfairly used as a punching bag by snobbish cinephiles despite the overwhelming evidence that he's a comedic genius. When he won Best Male Lead at the Independent Spirit Awards following his egregious Oscars snub for "Uncut Gems," his acceptance speech included the now-viral line, "I'd also like to give a shout-out to my fellow nominees,...

Netflix's "You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah" hit close to home for Adam Sandler and his family. We all know that Adam Sandler likes working with people he knows. The movies he produces with his production company Happy Madison regularly feature Kevin Nealon, Rob Schneider, and other cast members from his Saturday Night Live days. Many of his movies also feature supporting turns from guys you only see in Happy Madison flicks, like Alan Covert and Peter Dante. And, of course, he loves to cast Jennifer Aniston and Drew Barrymore as his love interests.
So it’s no surprise that Sandler’s latest Netflix movie You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzah sees him once again paired with Idina Menzel, who played his wife in Uncut Gems. Way back in 2018, the "Three Identical Strangers" documentary shocked viewers around the world as it told the story of three triplets who were separated at birth. The film chronicled the journey of Robert Shafran, Eddy Galland, and David Kellman as they discovered that they were identical triplets who were placed with different adoptive families as part of a scientific experiment. Now, their story is being turned into a limited TV series under Sony Pictures Television, with Ben Stiller in talks to star as all three brothers.
Reps for Stiller and Sony did not immediately respond to Popsugar's request for comment, but according to Variety, Stiller is set to lead the production company's forthcoming series.

Los Angeles, Feb 7 (Ians) Ben Stiller is nearing a deal to star in a limited series adaptation of the documentary ‘Three Identical Strangers’, ‘Variety’ has learned.
The series hails from writer Amy Lippman with Sony Pictures Television producing it along with Sk Global and TriStar Television. Like the documentary, the series would focus on the true story of Bobby Shafran, David Kellman and Eddy Galland — identical triplets who were separated at birth only to be reunited later in life.
Stiller, who’s executive producing via Red Hour Films, would star as the three adult brothers. Lippman, meanwhile, would serve as showrunner and executive producer.
The role would mark a rare television appearance for Stiller and one of his first major acting roles in years, notes ‘Variety’. He has made cameo appearances in films like ‘Hubie Halloween’ and ‘Bros’ of late, as well as appearing in the 2021 film ‘Locked Down’. His...

In a casting that raises several questions, Ben Stiller is in final talks to star in “Three Identical Strangers,” a limited series adaptation of the acclaimed documentary film, according to Variety.
The 2018 film, which was directed by Tim Wardle and won the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Storytelling at the Sundance Film Festival, tells the story of Bobby Shafran, David Kellman, and Eddy Galland — three identical triplets who meet by chance as adults, and the revelation of the undisclosed scientific experiment that separated them by birth. Upon its release, “Three Identical Strangers” received positive reviews, and made the shortlist for the Oscars’ Best Documentary Feature category.
Stiller will play all three of the brothers as adults. What makes his casting unusual is that Galland died by suicide in 1995, when he was 34. Stiller is currently 57, nearly 25 years older than Galland was at time of death. In addition, the meat...

With the pandemic still raging on and many, myself included, still feeling nervous about heading to the theaters, streaming services have been a lifeline for film fans. Netflix still reigns as the victor of the streaming wars and is continuing to establish itself as a certifiable force as a production company. The streamer led the Academy Award nominations last year with "The Power of the Dog," and there's a good chance they'll have plenty to celebrate in the coming weeks regarding this year's slate. 2022 was a time for restructuring and recouping massive losses, but Netflix still managed to put out some undeniably great original narrative features. As we head toward 2023, here are the 15 best original Netflix films of the year, including a few that haven't arrived on the app just yet.

Hubie Halloween was undoubtedly the most interesting Halloween movie released in recent years for various reasons, starting with it being an Adam Sandler-helmed film to the insane comedic elements that make it one of the funniest Halloween movies ever released. Adam Sandler has long been noted for absolutely outrageous movies and comedic style that he has applied to his acting and standup, first noted by his time on Saturday Night Live. From his time on SNL, Adam Sandler has gone on to create hysterical movies like Big Daddy and comedies sprinkled with drama like Click, ensemble-casted films like Grown Ups

One of comedy’s highest honors is headed Adam Sandler’s way.
The superstar comedian has been selected to receive the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. The Hustle star will receive the honor during a gala ceremony at Washington, D.C.’s John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on March 19.
The Mark Twain Prize “recognizes individuals who have had an impact on American society in ways similar to the distinguished 19th-century novelist and essayist Samuel Clemens, best known as Mark Twain.” Previous recipients include Richard Pryor, Whoopi Goldberg, Bob Newhart, Lily Tomlin, Neil Simon, Billy Crystal, George Carlin, Ellen DeGeneres, Carol Burnett, Jay Leno, David Letterman, Dave Chappelle and Jon Stewart. And many of his fellow Saturday Night Live alums have also received the honor, like Lorne Michaels, Steve Martin, Tina Fey, Will Ferrell, Eddie Murphy, Bill Murray and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Over the years, it’s been easy to see how people have viewed Adam Sandler and the movies he’s put out since the best of them have often been ignored to focus on the missteps that he’s made in other movies. After watching Hubie Halloween, it’s fair to say that it’s not a horrible movie, but the idea of Sandler taking on the look and sound of someone that has lived a moderately sheltered life and speaks in an odd sort of way is something that was done with The Waterboy, and as a result, this effort comes off as few

Tony Stark in “Captain America” asked, “Can you help a brother out?” For “Bros,” it turns out that, as was hoped, the help came from PVOD rentals.
The groundbreaking studio gay rom-com failed to gross 12 million in U.S./Canada results. Its failure generated much social media chit-chat, making it one of the best-known recent flops.
But it is the kind of release that benefits from Universal’s PVOD release policy (at 19.99) for most films after the third weekend: strong niche appeal, older audience, decent reviews, with an interest that might have been heightened by post-opening negative media about its performance.
“Bros” is either No. 2 or No. 3. That’s not sensational, but actually quite good for a studio release that fared this poorly in theaters. Whether the studio erred financially by not skipping theaters and the high marketing cost is uncertain. But to make a dent in their investment (22 million...

Days after announcing that “The Fabelmans” star Michelle Williams would be getting a Performer Tribute at the Gotham Awards, the indie film event has announced another recipient of that honor: Adam Sandler. He will be presented the award by filmmakers Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie, whom he worked with in “Uncut Gems.”
Jeffrey Sharp, Executive Director of The Gotham Film and Media Institute, said in a statement, “Adam Sandler’s spectacular performances across some of the most popular films of the past three decades have inspired the community of filmmakers that we represent here at The Gotham time and time again. Adam has proven that he is a brilliant talent who can deliver genuine heart and hilarious comedy in any role. Whether creating absurdly specific characters, telling jokes, or singing clever songs that we all know and love, Adam Sandler is the consummate performer who has brought immeasurable joy to audiences throughout the world.

Say goodbye to your calm demeanor, folks, because Adam Sandler and the Safdie Brothers (Josh and Benny) are teaming up for another project on Netflix. The group will join forces for an untitled feature starring Sandler, who in 2019 brought the directing duo’s Howard Ratner to life in Uncut Gems. The crime drama is about a jeweler with crippling debt and angry collectors closing in who puts everything on the line to stay afloat and alive. Uncut Gems was a critical success, despite being one of the most intense and uncomfortable movies ever conceived.
During his Hustle press tour, Sandler let the word slip about his next project with the Safdies. A platform was not attached to the project then, though it’s unsurprising that Netflix is now the home of Adam Sandler’s untitled feature. Adam Sandler earned strong reviews for his performance in Netflix’s “Hustle” earlier this year, but such acclaim is few and far between in the comedian’s filmography. For every “Hustle” or “Uncut Gems,” there’s an onslaught of comedies like “Murder Mystery,” “Hubie Halloween,” “The Ridiculous 6,” “Blended” and more. Film critics often have their knives out for Sandler, especially when it comes to his non-“Hustle” Netflix comedies, and he recently admitted to AARP that negative reviews can “sometimes” sting.
“Mostly because I invite all these amazing people I care about to make movies with me,” Sandler said, “and I wish they didn’t have to read shit about whatever we’ve made.”
With that said, Sandler added that “I don’t get too shook up” when it comes to critics bashing his movies.
“I always remember something my father said,” Sandler continued. “He was a tough bastard.

After longtime cast members Pete Davidson, Aidy Bryant, Kate McKinnon, and Kyle Mooney parted ways with the sketch comedy series earlier this year, “SNL” has now confirmed that Alex Moffat, Melissa Villaseñor, and Aristotle Athari will not be returning for the upcoming season.
Moffat, who frequently plays Eric Trump on the series, joined the cast for Season 42 as a featured player from 2016 through 2018. He was brought on as a full-time cast member in 2018. He has since starred in “Holidate” and “Clifford the Big Red Dog,” with upcoming films “Susie Searches,” “Christmas with the Campbells,” “Jodie,” and series “Bad Monkey” in the works.
Villaseñor also became part of the “SNL” cast in Season 42, similarly starting as a featured player and along with Moffat, becoming a full time repertory player in 2018. Villaseñor started as a contestant on “America’s Got Talent” before booking “SNL.

This is how they win: Josh and Benny Safdie are officially reuniting with “Uncut Gems” star Adam Sandler for another film together.
So much for Sandler’s threats about a “Grown Ups 3” following his Oscar snub for his “Gems” role. Sandler told Entertainment Weekly that he is “going to do another movie with the Safdie brothers,” but did not divulge any specific details about the upcoming project.
“They’re working hard on it,” Sandler said. “Their work ethic is bananas. They’re always working, always writing, always thinking. I don’t know what I can tell you, but it’s gonna be very exciting. It’s different. But I don’t want them to ever say, ‘What the hell did you tell him that for?’ So I’ll just let them talk [about it].”
Sandler won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead with “Gems,” and previously shared that he “would die to work with [the Safdies] again.

The 1990s were the heyday for kid-led sports movies, with films like "The Big Green," "The Sandlot," "Little Giants," "Ladybugs," "Air Bud," "Little Big League," "Angels in the Outfield," and "Rookie of the Year" becoming household favorites, but only one* became a certified cultural phenomenon. Disney's "The Mighty Ducks" spawned a trilogy of films, an animated television series, a live-action sequel television series, and a real-life National Hockey League hockey team. The feature writing debut of Steve Brill, "The Mighty Ducks" nabbed Stephen...

Halloween seems to have had a completely opposite impact on theaters and home viewing. Ticket sales dropped sharply this weekend, with parties, trick or treating and other holiday socializing taking priority. But at the same time, people searching for movies at home heavily favored Halloween-related content.
As always, unlike box office results, we are clueless about relative financial returns for VOD transactions. But it’s hard not to notice that among the three top 10 charts listed below, 18 of the 30 slots went to horror films. And nine of them went to older titles that have returned over the last two weeks.
For the first time in five weeks, “Free Guy” (Disney/$5.99) didn’t place #1 on all of the lists. It came very close though. It leads at Apple TV/iTunes and Google Play (both calculating by transactions), but fell to #3 at Vudu, which counts by revenues. That platform rarely has non-pvod...
