Less funny the more I watched it
bellaramoi8 July 2020
I don't understand how anyone can find Anne Edmonds or Sam Simmons funny. At first the shock factor was hilarious but the more it went on it just became boring. Anne and her loud obnoxious characters were just so...cringey. Like? How were the other comedians laughing? Cringe cringe cringe. But in saying that I'd still watch a season two.

Cracked me up
mayaalon-9089020 June 2020
The show is a brilliant way to expose us to the Australian comic scene. It is also a great insight into how difficult it is to be a performer and the fine line between one who is performing and one not. Sam Simmons and Ann Edmonds are hilarious as well as everybody else. 10 comedians in a room and each has their different act they have to be funny to each other and to the camera. Great show.

Good concept, overall lacking in comedy- not representative of Australian comedy.
supertaz8011 July 2020
I like the concept and feel it could work well with a better cast selection based on willingness to try, and understanding that the goal is to laugh, not cringe or vomit.

I found a couple of the comedians great; love Woodley who is generally able to turn most things funny in his calm, serious, sometimes deadpan style. Anne was funny at times from her unexpectedness and character play. They are why it gets 6 and not 4.

I'm overall disappointed and embarrassed that this might be what foreigners think is the nature of Australian comedy.

* There were quite a few people there that weren't comedic. Whilst it might be intimidating for green comedians against veterans, or extroverts, the lack of activity and effort from at least four, was disappointing. They were either too focused on not laughing, or they need to change careers because they don't know how to do comedy. Also despite advertising, this wasn't Australia's best comedians. This is, as expected, the best they could expect to get, with one or two exceptions.

  • while people have different senses of humour there is a general agreement that we'd be laughing right? There's physical comedy, slapstick, puns, character driven etc. it's all kind of represented here. But there was a predominance of what some called 'absurdist' humour, mainly from one persons tour de force of gross out activities. Msybe people legit found this funny. I don't get it. It's barely physical humour. It's not slapstick. It seemed that one trick pony's entire approach was, make them gag or cringe. For 6 hours. Not precisely the goal of Comedy.

  • there was general unfunnyness from several people. Being centre stage and trying to throw up? Dumping flour on your head with no follow up? Pointing out all the dogs in this book are probably dead now?

* it's a disappointing showcase and representation of Australian comedy. You don't need big names or experience. You just need quality. or effort. There was a LOT of mediocre and a dash of non attempt at comedy.

A couple of bright spots and a good concept that will only be realised if they get quality comedians with more diversity in their comedic toolkit

Dear World This is not typical of Australian humour. We do have quality comedians. We can be funny. Seriously. Regards.

Depends on your type of humour.
alwayssmile93629 June 2020
Not the greatest showcase of some of the comedians but I am not the type of person who finds it funny in saying the most crass thing for attention. To me you're just "trying" to be funny. But there is comedians in there that don't rely on that and are genuinely funny without screaming and yelling crass words so it is worth a watch.

First couple of episodes were interesting then it got pitiful
sarjay4 July 2020
The first few episodes were interesting, if not funny. I expected this to be funny but quickly realised that it wasn't/wouldn't be only to find it quite interesting to see which varieties of humour were able to trip the different comedians up. Unfortunately the only comedians left at the end were filthy vulgar childish debased and uninteresting. I never found out who won, it just got sad and I couldn't hack it out. I don't mind a bit of crass humour but what makes it funny is the unexpected nature of it. When all the rules are out the door there is nowhere left to go but into boring and pitiful insanity. I feel sorry for myself that I watched as long as I did

Not funny at all
sorcered4 July 2020
Maybe Australians will enjoy it, dunno. It just felt like a bucketload of farts and kiddish jokes and nonsense to me. I sped up through the season, thinking maybe at least the last wpisode ahould be fun, the last remaining comedians must be the best, right? No, sir. Complete waste of time.

What in the name of all things holy have I just watched?
semjoby20 June 2020
Take 10 comedians put them in a room for 6 hours and see which one can hold back the laughter to win 100,000 Australian dollars! I've watched the first 2 episodes, I don't want to but I need you watch more, I have to find out who wins! Curious but strangely compelling watch!

Nope.
This show actually made me angry by how bad it was. Not funny at all. It was so cringe. Sam Simmons was the actual worst. This show was the worst. I'm going to stop listening to Hughsey and Ed in the arvos now, just because Ed's face annoyed me the whole time. Let's never do this again, please.

Why all the bad reviews? Couldn't stop giggling
annakedwards2 July 2020
I think this is a great concept and I thought it was genuinely funny. Haven't had a good belly laugh in a while and this is just what everyone needs at the moment. Don't believe the poor reviews; this is worth a watch.

Some excellent moments that ran out of stream at the end
mike-50785 July 2020
There were lots of ups and downs in this show which had an interesting premise but needed some tweaking. On paper, the idea of comics trying to make each other laugh but being penalised for smiling or laughing is an interesting challenge but in practice it became slightly laboured and torturous. There were some truly funny moments and most comedians had some true classic moments. There was so much material that it took an end-of-show review to really appreciate the onslaught of quality gags. I felt like the last couple of episodes dragged as the competitors and even Rebel seemed exhausted. I felt that the trophy went to the wrong person as well, but that's just me. Overall, entertaining but needs to be a bit tighter.

Do not go into this expecting Stand Up Comedy
cwarrmail28 June 2020
I binge watched all of the episodes in one go tonight. I feel like the problem that most of the reviewers in this review section had reflected their expectations for the show. This is a show with comedians so it must be like stand up comedy? I would disagree with this statement.

I would recommend this show for people who like reality game show / competition type shows. I am a big fan of shows like big brother where a bunch of people are stuck in a house together and compete.

The comedians dont just go into it with a list of jokes and do a show like you would expect from stand up comedy. They improvise and compete with each other.

-The humor is for a mature audience, I would not let a kid watch the show. -The humor can be cringey and crude but that is what makes it funny. -Sometimes the goal is just how absurd you can be in an attempt to make the competition laugh

Don't go into this expecting stand up comedy. Go into this show looking for absurd over the top, silly, whacky, weird, improvisational, reality competition. They are not trying to make the audience laugh they are trying to make their competition laugh. That being said, I was laughing the whole time.

The best parts don't take place in the main room
cannonalsobrook12 July 2020
The best thing about LOL: Australia is the commentary from the contestants when they take the time to break down what happened, and what works, what should work, and what definitely doesn't work. The main room where most of the "action" takes place is actually full of antics that are less about humor and more about trying to get some sort of reaction - any reaction - from another contestant. That is to say that much of the comedy just doesn't work. It doesn't work on the other contestants, which is rather the point, but it also doesn't really work for the viewer either. The funniest bits are the quick asides, that are almost throwaway comments, that are unexpected, but witty enough to garner a smile. By the end, the room is a mess that looks like something left over from an 8 year old's birthday party, if that party was at least R - rated, mind you.

The rules don't really matter. Some contestants are called out for the smallest of reactions. Others get away with belly laughter, but remain in the game. In the end, we're left with two, and they engage in a titanic scale bit of weird gamesmanship that goes nowhere. I won't risk spoilers, but I will say that the contestants that don't really participate much and/or sit around and take shots at others end up being a disappointment. Hats off to the contestants that try everything, and I mean literally everything, only to come away empty. Some of these comedians are masters of shamelessness, which is saying something for folks in a profession that features some of the most insecure people on the planet.

The show could use more commentary. The interviews with contestants aren't long enough and don't go deep enough. For a show that really isn't all that funny, it could at least be interesting. The best interviews are the ones near the end of the competition, when the remaining contestants (two of them) really start to break down their strategy and their thought process. It's fascinating. Just not enough of it.

Rebel Wilson does a fine job hosting. I'd watch another season, but would like more of what has a change of working, and less of the outrageous, gross out antics that are easily shrugged off as not funny, just stupid. And finally, more commentary, please.

Funny premise quickly degenerated into self-indulgent, unfunny boy fest.
bronwen-610084 August 2020
This could be funny - large group of comedians locked in a room trying not to make each other laugh and Rebel Wilson as the host. First episode or two were a little funny but it quickly ran out of steam. The last few of episodes were as weak as anything I have seen. Self-indulgent, unfunny frat-house humour. Even the usually wonderful Rebel couldn't save it and looked exhausted and slightly desperate by the end. Judges were very quick to get rid of some very talented female comedians and the middle-aged, white men proceeded far further than their performances should have permitted. Yawn.

If it hadn't been in lockdown I wouldn't have bothered. Suggest you don't bother. Even in lockdown.

the first one who laughs calls me
jazfro19 June 2020
What a waste of comedic talent. this is a naive and unsuccessful attempt to make reality-tv with comedians: no script, no substance, hoping that the mere challenge of making the others laugh suffices. no such luck: without a format to de-construct, parody, or ridicule (usually what improv comedians are good at), nothing much happens, and no one is laughing. the premise is shallow, the execution is on a par with the bachelorette, but the latter is funnier and easier on the eye. guess which show i'd rather have watched?

Not exactly what I expected but enjoyed
vickytoria229 July 2020
I do think it's a preference of what you (personally) think is funny. I generally really enjoyed this show. A complexly different 'comedy show'. Very lovable people who did make me laugh. Silliness, almost slapstick moments were very entertaining, but slightly awkward.

Although toward the end, it seemed like everyone was going a little bit crazy

Poor Australia if those are funniest people there
zoranmajstrovic23 July 2020
Unwatchable. Zero jokes. Zero anything.

It would funnier if they put 10 random people from street.

Disturbing and entertaining at the same time
jackstab12 August 2020
I watched this all 6 episodes in one go and it scarred me for the rest of the week. Hilariously addictive watch. Great idea for a show looking forward to the next season. Rebel was well cast as the game master. Great way to get to know the comedians a bit better.

I never saw such a big waste in comedy. Not at all a laugh moment. Doing very dumb stuff. Don't watch it. Complete waste of time.

Very Funny
lbson22 June 2020
I'm not really in to standup so I didn't really recognize any of the comedians. But the premise of the show seemed interesting so I gave it a go, and I'm glad I did.

First of all I watched a couple episodes of the Mexican version beforehand, and they tried but hardly gave me a laugh. Now the Australian version, wow. These people are hilarious, made me laugh without even trying, can't wait for the rest of the season.

Was genuinely in tears
monsxanne26 June 2020
I only watched this because I'm a ride or die Frank Woodley fan but ended up enjoying all the comedians & could not stop laughing.

Full of laughs & loopiness.

Some of the funniest parts of the show is when they express how funny something is but with zero emotion on their face.

I'm praying my boy Frank wins.

Have a nine because I wish it was longer with more episodes 😭

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME
suzynoonan18 July 2020
This was one of the most idiotic shows I've ever seen. It was PAINFUL to watch. I turned it off during the second episode. Otherwise funny comedians are reduced to absolutely NOT FUNNY. What a waste of talent.
