The best days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are behind it, and I don't just mean the fall from its decade-long box office throne. Any media that reaches pop culture omnipresence like Marvel movies did inspires a counterwave of backlash -- it's just the way the discourse flows. And with the MCU, there's a lot to critique.
There's shoddy filmmaking, the centering of Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige as the creative glue, the cheap self-deprecating humor that's spread its roots across Hollywood (e.g. Netflix's live-action "Cowboy Bebop"), and the aimless, complicated-yet-simplistic narrative that exists in service of nothing but its further propagation. That last issue is inherited from Marvel Comics, yet if you dive into current Marvel comics, you'll find one all-too-aware series that is weaving MCU critique into its (meta)text. That series is Al Ewing's "Immortal Thor".

We've been waiting what feels like a very long time for Spider-Man 4, but the movie is now finally somewhere on the horizon. Rumours continue to swirl about what to expect, though everyone seems to agree that Venom will factor into the story.
In Spider-Man: No Way Home's post-credits scene, we learned Eddie Brock had decided against travelling to New York to confront the web-slinger. However, when he was sent back to his reality, Venom left a piece of himself behind.
That has to be touched on eventually, and with Peter Parker friendless and alone, now could be the right time to take Spidey down a dark path.
In this feature, we're taking a deep dive into the Spider-Man 4 rumours and exploring where Marvel Studios could take this story in the hero's franchise...and beyond! Just tap the "Next"/"View List" buttons below to find out more...

After delivering impressive performances in movies like The Impossible and In the Heart of the Sea, Tom Holland hit the big time when he was cast as Peter Parker in 2016's Captain America: Civil War.
He'd go on to star in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, becoming an MCU veteran in just five years. However, outside of his Marvel Studios work, Holland has struggled.
While he's impressed on the animation side in Onward and Spies in Disguise, Cherry, Chaos Walking, Uncharted, and his first TV series, The Crowded Room, all drew mixed-to-negative reviews.
As a result, it's hard to shake the feeling that, outside of Spider-Man, Holland is struggling to make his mark. In contrast, his girlfriend and fellow MCU actor Zendaya, has received critical acclaim for her work in Dune and The Challengers.

The well-oiled hit content-producing machine famed as the Marvel Cinematic Universe has of late seen a slew of hits and misses at the box office. Following Avengers: Endgame, the expectations from the Kevin Feige-led studio have reached sky-high. However, it has yet to meet those and churn out a live-action project for the big screens of that scale and hype.

Rumours about who will direct Spider-Man 4 continue to swirl, with Ms. Marvel and Batgirl directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah among those supposedly in the mix.
Jon Watts helmed Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home but appears ready to move on from the web-slinger. Despite also leaving The Fantastic Four, Kevin Feige is said to be keen on Watts returning to the MCU for another project.
Appearing at a recent screening event for Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Fallah was asked to speak on the Spider-Man 4 rumours and his reaction (refusing to answer the question while saying "I can't talk about that...") may be telling.
While we're not suggesting this has confirmed his and El Arbi's involvement with the movie, it seems highly likely the duo are likely contenders.

In 2002, director Sam Raimi gave one of Marvel’s iconic superheroes a face through the casting of Tobey Maguire as the first live-action Spider-Man. Maguire’s innocent charm and endearing personality fit the bill perfectly with regard to the image of character made famous by Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko.

Among the many stars who would have shown interest to be cast in this marquee role, one of the names that would never have crossed anyone’s mind was pop legend Michael Jackson. According to reports, the singing superstar was extremely keen to be cast as Spider-Man and was even willing to go to ingenious monetary lengths to ensure that his dream came true. But it was not meant to be.

It was recently confirmed that Sony is developing its last Venom movie ever, Venom: The Last Dance. Although no further details regarding the movie have been revealed, whether this will be Tom Hardy’s last dance too or not, there have been some pretty interesting rumors about the upcoming movie.
Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock in Venom | Sony Pictures
According to one leaked plot for the movie, Sony is reportedly planning to introduce a 10-year-old Peter Parker in the film. And if this rumored leak holds any traction, the film will well ruin the one scene that ties Hardy’s Venom movies with Tom Holland’s MCU movies.

Ever since Florence Pugh made her Hollywood debut in 2014, she has been on a meteoric rise. The actress has been cast in a wide variety of films, making her one of the most prolific actors of this generation. In her relatively short career, she has already been a household name, when she joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2021 when she made her debut as Yelena Belova in Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow.

It was recently confirmed that Venom: The Last Dance will be the final movie in Sony's hit franchise. That could be because Tom Hardy is ready to move on or a result of Marvel Studios having its own plans for the Symbiote.
Either way, after the runaway success of 2018's Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage's respectable performance in the post-pandemic 2021, Sony is no doubt hoping this trilogy ends on a high (and profitable) note.
While the movie remains shrouded in secrecy, a newly surfaced plot leak for Venom: The Last Dance has been gaining traction on social media this evening.

In 2017, Tom Holland won his first BAFTA Award as the year’s Rising Star. The British Academy may have been a little late in recognizing the young actor, as Holland first won international critical acclaim five years earlier with his spectacular on-screen debut as a tsunami survivor in J.A. Bayona‘s “The Impossible.” Even then, Holland was considered a bit of an acting veteran, as four years earlier, at age 12, he hit the London stage with a leading role in the award-winning “Billy Elliot: The Musical.”
Impressed with his dance skills and gymnastics background (as well as his dramatic chops), Marvel signed Holland to a six-picture deal to play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the MCU. Most importantly, the young actor received the key blessing from Stan Lee, who said that Holland was the “exact age and height” he had in mind when he envisioned the character. Tom Holland has given some of the best performances of his lifetime in star-studded projects like those from Marvel including the Avengers and the Spider-Man film series, and has even garnered a massive fan following. However, his latest project isn’t gaining the best of reviews from anyone, including not only critics but a considerable majority of his fandom as well.

The project that has been getting all this hate is his latest play Romeo and Juliet with Francesca Amewudah-Rivers, and one of the biggest reasons behind this backlash is only understandable: the glumness and lack of energy in the drama. However, even through such tough times, Holland has his biggest supporter and the love of his life still right by his side: Zendaya.

Sony Pictures initially planned spin-off films featuring Spider-Man villains after the release of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” (2014), but scrapped the idea due to its reception. In February 2015, Sony entered a collaboration with Marvel Studios to integrate Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
This partnership resulted in the release of “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017), “Spider-Man: Far From Home” (2019), and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (2021). Concurrently, Sony independently produced “Venom” (2018) and its sequel “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” (2021), as well as “Morbius” (2022), all of which featured connections to the MCU through mid-credits scenes.

Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s entry into the MCU was one of those iconic moments in superhero cinema, that Sony badly wants to recreate. If it were up to them, the Tom Rothman-led studio would have reunited the three heroes once again in the hopes of making another $2 billion phenomenon. Marvel’s constant objection to this plan may have forced Sony to consider another option for Maguire and Garfield.

Believe it or not, it was way back in 2017 when we first learned of Todd McFarlane's plans to team with Blumhouse for a new R-Rated Spawn movie.
Spider-Man: No Way Home star Jamie Foxx boarded the movie in 2018, with Hawkeye's Jeremy Renner tapped to play Twitch Williams later that same year.
Since then, we've had what's felt like an endless series of updates from McFarlane. He's talked about redesigning the hero, possibly selling the reboot to a streaming service, issues with the screenplay, and even enlisted new writers in Scott Silver (Joker), Malcolm Spellman (Captain America: New World Order) and up-and-coming scribe Matthew Mixon.
Despite all of that, the movie is seemingly no closer to becoming a reality.
"There's a script but the writers are, they're not quite sort of satisfied with their own work, which is what all of us creative people are," McFarlane, who once planned...

While we never got to see Peter losing Uncle Ben in the MCU, which makes sense as it has been done to death in other iterations, No Way Home did leave fans teary-eyed with Aunt May’s demise. Although heartbreaking for sure, this could be regarded as this version of Peter’s canon event, as her death and Nwh‘s ending set the path for a more traditional Spider-Man story moving forward.
However, per new reports, it seems this wasn’t the last of Marisa Tomei’s Aunt May in the MCU, as Spider-Man 4 is reportedly planning to bring her back in some form.

About a month ago, Marvel Studios dropped the second trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine. The highly viewed clip lay packed with easter eggs even as it included a complete and detailed look at Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.
However, a scene towards the end featuring the famed duo jumping right into a sling ring portal caught fans off-guard and fueled rampant speculations about the involvement of other MCU legends such as Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange.

With the San Diego Comic-Con and D23 fast approaching, it surely won't be too much longer until we get a long-overdue slate update from Marvel Studios.
Some changes are bound to have been made following a return to quality over quantity and there are still big gaps in the Multiverse Saga which need to be filled.
It's looking like Young Avengers will be one of those projects and, according to scooper @MyTimeToShineH, that will be led by Hailee Steinfeld's Kate Bishop/Hawkeye and Iman Vellani's Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel. The Marvels' post-credits scene set the stage for them to take charge of the team, so we're not exactly shocked.
As for who will join them, your guess is as good as ours...there are plenty of potential candidates, though.
Next up is Spider-Man 4. Earlier today, we told you that Venom is expected to play a minor role in the movie.

Spider-Man projects have always been a soft spot for superhero fans. Be it films, animated masterpieces, or videogames; projects featuring any version of the websligger are bound to reach impressive numbers. This has been the case for many years, dating back to when Tobey Maguire’s film was first released in 2002.

However, Marvel fans collectively agree that there are three main live-action Spider-Men; Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland. All have had iconic runs, shared the screen together, and caused conflicts among fans.
Many have argued about who did their job as the character best, and a recent number may clear one contender completely off the list.

As part of Sony's celebration of Columbia Pictures' 100th anniversary, every live-action Spider-Man movie is swinging back into theaters.
Dropping every Monday as part of the studio's "Spider-Mondays," we've seen over the past 5 weeks that there's a real appetite among moviegoers to see the wall-crawler back on the big screen.
Unfortunately, Spider-Man: Homecoming webbed up the lowest box office haul to date with a disappointing $285,000 opening day. With 466 theaters in the U.S. screening the movie, that works out to a far from amazing $612 per theater average.
Some will likely jump on this news to tear into the MCU, forgetting that Marvel Studios actually saved Spidey back in 2017 (following his memorable debut the year prior in Captain America: Civil War).
Understandably, there's less interest in seeing Tom Holland's Spider-Man back on the big screen because he's really not been gone that long. Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy and...

Phase five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a real crisis for Kevin Feige and co. The Marvel Studios head has been forced back to the drawing board in the wake of audiences realizing, en masse, that there's been far too much of the MCU and it's getting ridiculous. Since then, Disney and Marvel Studios have seemingly taken their declining box office returns and the general superhero malaise that has settled among audiences seriously. The biggest and most promising sign of an actual course-correction taking place was the announcement that we'll be getting far fewer MCU movies in the future, with only a single movie in the shared universe releasing in 2024.
That movie is, of course, "Deadpool & Wolverine," the first Deadpool movie from Marvel Studios and a potential "Spider-Man: No Way Home"-level event. Not only will this film bring Hugh Jackman's Wolverine out of retirement, but...

Spider-Man 4 is one of Marvel Studios' most highly anticipated movies but, as we write this, it has no release date or even a confirmed director.
According to Jeff Sneider, Marvel and Sony Pictures are developing a new trilogy together, with the intention being for one director - or a directing duo - to work on all three instalments.
He says it's unclear whether shooting really will begin this fall because Kevin Feige is taking his time choosing a filmmaker and is fully in charge of the creative process. That bodes well for Spider-Man 4 after it was previously reported he might be a little more hands-off due to having so many other commitments in getting the MCU back on the right track.
We've already heard a few different names for the movie, but Sneider makes a point of saying that Feige was particularly impressed with Adil El Arbi and...

Let’s not beat around the bush; Marvel’s going through something right now. The superhero studio’s recent output has simply exhausted both casual and hardcore fans alike.
The sentiment appears to be close to universal too: amidst the avalanche of MCU content, there have been too few hits and too many misses. The fact that Bob Iger, Disney’s Chief Executive Officer, has publicly said that they’re going to change strategy and “slowly decrease volume” tells you everything you need to know.
So how does Marvel proceed from here? MCU mastermind Kevin Feige is seemingly planning to course-correct by re-assembling the Avengers sooner rather than later. Next year alone will see the release of Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts, The Fantastic Four, and Blade, followed a few months later by a new Avengers—previously subtitled “The Kang Dynasty,” though that’s reportedly been abandoned.
It’s a sensible play.

Out of all the characters introduced in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe so far, Tom Hardy’s Venom is undoubtedly fans’ number one choice thanks to the relationship between Eddie Brock and the alien symbiote. However, since Venom is a Marvel Comics character associated with Spider-Man, fans hoped for a long time to see Tom Hardy’s Venom and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man come face-to-face in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe had a rocky start this year with the major flop ‘Madame Web.’ Fortunately, there are still opportunities to turn things around with two notable releases on the horizon: ‘Kraven the Hunter’ and the final installment of the ‘Venom’ franchise.
That’s right, ‘Venom: The Last Dance’ will be the final ‘Venom’ movie in the Ssu, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the end of Venom.
According to notable scooper and leaker MyTimeToShineHello, Venom will make an appearance in ‘Spider-Man 4,’ though he won’t be the main villain.

The Russo Brothers Once Revealed Allegedly Fighting Sony For Hiring Tom Holland As Spider-Man(Photo Credit – Instagram)
Tom Holland is currently the beloved Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, in the MCU, but the English actor would not have gotten the part if it wasn’t for the Russo brothers—Joe and Anthony Russo. The directors had to fight with Sony to cast Tom as Peter. Keep scrolling for more.
Holland appeared as the web-slinging superhero for the first time in MCU’s Captain America: Civil War, directed by the Russo brothers. Tom then had his solo film the following year and appeared in the Avengers movies. His films are placed in the Sony-shared Marvel universe, and the last one earned a billion dollars released in the last leg of 2021.

In Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker turned to Doctor Strange for help after Mysterio revealed his secret identity to the world. The former Sorcerer Supreme was more than willing to lend a helping hand, only for his spell to quickly go wrong.
That was because Peter tried making a series of changes to the incantation, ensuring his friends and family would remember the fact they'd learned his identities.
With a host of villainous Variants subsequently pulled into Earth-616, Spidey was outmatched until he got a helping hand from his Friendly Neighbourhood and Amazing counterparts.
Despite managing to "cure" those supervillains, reality started tearing apart and Peter had to get Strange to finish the spell...with everyone forgetting the fact he, not Spider-Man, exists.
Now, a new rumour suggests Strange's spell had far-reaching consequences.
According to leaker @MyTimeToShineH, everyone on Peter #2 (Tobey Maguire) and Peter #3's (Andrew Garfield) worlds also forget them.

Sony Pictures initially planned spin-off films featuring Spider-Man villains after “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” (2014) but abandoned the idea due to its reception. In February 2015, Sony collaborated with Marvel Studios to integrate Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
This partnership led to the release of “Spider-Man: Homecoming” (2017), “Spider-Man: Far From Home” (2019), and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (2021). Meanwhile, Sony independently developed “Venom” (2018) and its sequel “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” (2021), along with “Morbius” (2022), which featured connections to the MCU through mid-credits scenes.
Additionally, Sony’s animated “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” (2023) is linked to the Sony Spider-Man Universe (Ssu). Most Ssu films received negative reviews, with “Venom,” “Morbius,” and “Madame Web” (2024) being criticized, although “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” received mixed reviews. The franchise earned $1.6 billion globally, but “Morbius” and “Madame Web” were commercial disappointments.

Marvel Studios has been tasked by Disney CEO Bob Iger with getting back to quality over quantity. That's why, moving forward, we're getting three movies per year and only two Disney+ TV shows.
We'd bet on Kevin Feige appearing at both the San Diego Comic-Con and D23 to share an updated Multiverse Saga slate, but some updates come our way today courtesy of scooper Daniel Richtman.
We'll start with Spider-Man 4. That's supposedly set to begin shooting this fall, with the plan being for the movie to arrive in theaters as soon as fall 2025. It's a quick turnaround, but very much in line with the wall-crawler's previous solo outings.
Here's where things get really interesting: Richtman adds that the piece of Venom left on Earth-616 at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home will play a role in the movie. Given what a dark place Peter Parker is likely to...

Spider-Man: Far From Home introduced audiences to Mysterio, one of Spider-Man’s most important and dastardly villains. Jake Gyllenhaal’s portrayal of the character had audiences believing that the character was genuinely heroic, even those who thought they knew how the character was in the comics. However, the film also introduced another important character into the MCU: Spider-Man’s very first antagonist from way back in The Amazing Spider-Man #1.

Dmitri Smerdyakov is the oldest antagonist that Spider-Man ever faced, better known as The Chameleon. Half-brother to Kraven the Hunter, the character has had a long history with Spider-Man, created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Dmitri was present in Spider-Man: Far From Home as a background character, appearing in several shots as a close associate of Nick Fury.

The X-Men have always been some of the most prominent characters in the Marvel comics, even though their film-based adaptations after Logan were not that kindly received by fans. However, with the recently released titular smash-hit animated series and the sequel of the original series from 1992 on these mutants, this band of heroes just may be reclaiming their lost position.

Adding to this are Hugh Jackman and other actors from the movies returning to reprise their iconic mutants in the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine, which further paves the way for even more actors from the original saga to return. That said, Shawn Ashmore, who played Iceman in the original film series, has expressed his wish to join the Marvel Universe as well.

"Madame Web," released on Abraham Lincoln's birthday, frustrated audiences everywhere with its bizarre scripting, its lack of action, its weirdly unmotivated villain, and its staunch refusal to depict its lead characters actually turning into the superheroines they were destined to become. The title character was Cassandra Webb (Dakota Johnson) a New York paramedic in 2003 who discovers she has clairvoyant powers. She traces the origin of her powers back to her birth in the Amazon rainforests, where a rare, mystical spider bit her pregnant mother. Her powers also bring her inexplicably into the company of three New York teenagers who will all become Spider-Women someday -- but not in this film.
Chasing the quartet is Spider-Man (Tahar Rahim), or rather an evil precursor to Spider-Man who has the same super-strength, the same costume, the same wall-crawling powers, and who shares Madame Web's talent for clairvoyance. He has seen a...

Since 2021, Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock and Vincent D'Onofrio's Kingpin of Crime have shown up in various MCU TV shows.
We've seen the Man Without Fear in Spider-Man: No Way Home, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, and Echo, with Wilson Fisk appearing in the latter and Hawkeye. However, these two haven't shared the screen since Daredevil wrapped up on Netflix six years ago.
That's set to change in Disney+'s Daredevil: Born Again and, in an interview with TV Insider, D'Onofrio revealed that the revival originally featured no significant links to Daredevil.
"It originally wasn’t going to be at all, but now it’s a lot," the actor said of crossovers between the two. Cox chimed in to say there's now "a lot" of them, presumably meaning Foggy Nelson, Karen Page, Bullseye, and The Punisher were M.I.A. in the previous iteration of Born Again.

It's an uncertain time for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Marvel Studios looking to get back to quality over quantity, we're expecting sweeping changes to be made to the Multiverse Saga slate, with D23 or Comic-Con the most likely destinations for an update.
However, we're not the only ones wondering what's next. Talking to The Playlist, Benedict Cumberbatch was asked what he knows of Doctor Strange 3.
"Who knows," he responded when they wondered whether it would be released before the next Avengers movies. As for the former Sorcerer Supreme's role in those, Cumberbatch added, "We will see. We will find out. I’m not sure where he’s been and what he’s been up to and who with, but yeah, I know as little as you."
Later, the site quizzed the actor on the major changes made to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness after it was pushed...
