This is the first episode set in Los Angeles' Chinese community. The third largest in North America (behind San Francisco and Vancouver,) Los Angeles' Chinese community is multi-generational, with the earliest settlements following closely on the gold rush of 1849. As the largest port of entry on the west coast of the Pacific Rim, Los Angeles has seen a recent influx of Chinese immigrants, spreading the community outside its original boundaries to a group of cities in the eastern suburbs. The largest Chinese population in the Los Angeles area now resides in the city of Monterey Park, which adjoins the eastern city limits of Los Angeles, a few miles from downtown. (Parker Center, the HQ of the LAPD until the following season, is located next door to Chinatown).
