***SPOILERS*** Undercover NYPD policewoman Casey Jones, Beverly Garland, is given the assignment to uncover fraud in New York's swanky art district by checking out an original Van Gogh painting that, under close x-ray examination, turned out to be a fake! It's wealthy socialite Mrs. Deene, Eleanor Phelps, who's Van Gogh painting of "Starry Night" was proved to be faked by someone who knows his business but is nowhere as good as the master, Vincent Van Gogh, in copying his works!
As things turn out the owner of the gallery that the painting was sold a Mr. Corso, Edger Stehli, seems to know a lot more then he's letting out to the police in not knowing. In that he's selling fake masterpieces at record high prices like the painting he sold Mrs. Deeme for a cool $60,000.00.
Going down to Greenwich village to check out the local artists policewoman Casey Jones tracks down struggling artist Jack Wilson, Raymond Reinhardt, who seems to have a Van Gogh complex to the point where he seems to feel that he in fact is Van Gogh himself. Acting as if she's interested in his paintings policewoman Jones buys one of Wilson's works that's later checked out, in its breast stokes and mixture of blues and yellows, at the NYPD crime lab and found to be identical to the fake Van Gogh sold to Mrs. Deeme! It's when Casey Jones leaves Wilson's walk-up studio that Corso, who's been tailing her, pops in and threatens the sacred to death Wilson that he'll expose his racket, faking original paintings, if he ever opens his mouth to the police about his connection to him!
***SPOILER*** A terribly depressed Wilson tries to kill himself by gassing himself to death, with an open gas stove, but Casey Jones saves him at the very last moment! It now comes out that Wilson was just a pasty for Corso who used him to fake van Gogh painting not to keep for himself but to sell to his very unsuspecting and wealthy customers! Raiding the Corso Art Gallery policewoman Jones, together with Jack Wilson, catch to old geezer red handed as he tries to shoot, unsuccessfully, his way out of the place. As things turn out it's not the fake paintings that Corso's been selling over the years that was his major crime! It was in fact the real Van Gogh painting of "Starry Night" that he stole years ago and then used Wilson Van Gogh's imitations to cover up his crime!
