Max has done it again. The Warner Bros. Discovery streamer has canceled another one of their masterful, underappreciated shows, this time the enthralling, cross-cultural crime period piece “Tokyo Vice.” The news was announced at the PGA’s Produced By conference by the show’s creator and executive producer J.T. Rogers and executive producer and director Alan Poul during a panel with Max original programming chief, Sarah Aubrey.
Despite the series’ short run, the panelists indicated that this was a mutual decision.
“We’re grateful not only to Max, but to our partners Fifth Season, who sold the show around the world, and made it a global success story,” Rogers and Poul wrote in join statement shared by Variety. “They were in the trenches with us always, guaranteeing that we could make the show we wanted to make. The response from both the press and from fans, in particular to Season 2, has been overwhelming.

Tokyo Vice’s days on Max have come to a conclusion.
During a panel at the Produced By conference Saturday in Los Angeles, producers confirmed that the recently concluded second season will be the show’s last on the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed platform.
Originally pitched as a two-season show with the events of the series having ended with its April 4 finale, fittingly titled “Endgame,” star Ansel Elgort also only signed on for two seasons of the series.
“Over the last five years, Max has made sure we got to tell our story. They have supported us through thick and thin. Not only did they give us these two seasons, they said yes when we asked to end season one with a series of cliffhangers, and they said yes when we asked for two extra episodes so we could land the plane in the way [creator] J.T. Max is getting off the bus.
The Warner Bros. Discovery-backed streamer has canceled The Girls on the Bus after a single season on the platform. The Warner Bros. TV-produced drama, originally developed at Netflix and The CW before landing at the studio’s streaming counterpart, wrapped its 10-episode run May 9.
“While Max will not be moving forward with a second season of The Girls on the Bus, we are grateful to have partnered with immensely talented Amy Chozick, Julie Plec, Rina Mimoun, as well as the teams at Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Amazon’s Freevee is dropping out of High School.
The ad-supported free streamer has opted to cancel the heartfelt series inspired by the memoir from Grammy-nominated twin sibling performers Tegan and Sara Quin after a single season.
The writing for the cancellation has been on the wall. Despite rave reviews, High School last aired in October 2022 with the formal decision to cancel the show coming nearly two years after the fact.
Sources say Amazon-owned Freevee wanted to renew High School for a second season, with executives in late 2022 expressing enough optimism for showrunner Clea DuVall to open a mini-room to craft a sophomore run. Ultimately, sources say the completion rate for High School left Freevee and Amazon execs little choice but to cancel the series despite the fact that scripts for an entire second season had already been completed.
Freevee (then called IMDb TV) ordered the coming-of-age dramedy to series...

Why did fans love Our Flag Means Death? This series was a big upgrade for the on-screen pirates – they no longer sail the seas in search of mystical artifacts as in the cult Pirates of the Caribbean. Our Flag Means Death shows the pirates of a new era – they are absurd, humorous, and surprisingly vulnerable.
Our Flag Means Death was also an ode to escapism. In the hands of screenwriter David Jenkins, the story of an aristocrat-turned-pirate is transformed into a funny and poignant exploration of escapism as a way out of a mental crisis.
However, the devoted love of the fans did not save Our Flag Means Death from cancellation after the second season, and it continued a series of Taika Waititi's axed projects. In early 2023, the series Reservation Dogs was completed, and then the last, sixth season of What We Do in the Shadows was released.

Period dramas have always been hot (repression so often is). Whether it’s Oliver Reed and Alan Bates nude wrestling in front of a roaring fire in “Women in Love” or Keira Knightley and James McCardle in the library with the green dress in “Atonement,” sex has always been there in period dramas. But something has happened in recent years in television: Shows set in ye olden times have gotten much, much hornier.
“Bridgerton” earned a lot of publicity for its frank sex scenes in Season 1, but it was hardly the first. There’s something about peeling back the bedclothes (and clothes) of a lost era that makes it resonate even more with modern audiences. If the stolen glances and hastily scrawled notes are foreplay, then we’re now living in a golden age of ruffled and furbelowed consummation.

The Emmy-winning 3rd Rock From the Sun grad has been tapped to star opposite comedian Leanne Morgan in the untitled Netflix project from co-creator Chuck Lorre.
The muticamera sitcom, which was picked up with a 16-episode straight-to-series order last month, revolves around Leanne, whose life “takes an unexpected turn when her husband of 33 years leaves her for another woman. Starting over when you’re a grandmother and in menopause isn’t exactly what she had in mind, but with the help of her family she will navigate this new chapter with grace, dignity and Jell-o salad.”

Kristen Johnston will star alongside Leanne Morgan in the latter’s upcoming Netflix comedy series, Variety has learned.
The untitled multi-cam comedy was picked up at Netflix in April with a 16-episode order. Morgan co-created the series with Susan McMartin and Chuck Lorre. The role marks a reunion for Lorre and Johnston, as Johnston previously appeared in the CBS multi-cam “Mom,” which Lorre also co-created.
The official description for Morgan’s series states: “Leanne’s life takes an unexpected turn when her husband of 33 years leaves her for another woman. Starting over when you’re a grandmother and in menopause isn’t exactly what she had in mind, but with the help of her family she will navigate this new chapter with grace, dignity and jello salad.”
Johnston will star in the series regular role of Carol, Leanne’s sister. The character is said to be Leanne’s complete opposite.

Are you ready to make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Comedy Actor? Before you do, be sure to scroll through our photo gallery showcasing the men who are most likely to earn slots in the 76th annual lineup. Naturally, “The Bear” star Jeremy Allen White is widely expected to achieve a second consecutive victory and thereby maintain his perfect Emmys record.
White would be the fourth actor in 10 years to earn this specific award for both of his show’s first two seasons, following Jeffrey Tambor, Bill Hader, and Jason Sudeikis.
The only other 2023 comedy actor nominee in the running again this year is Martin Short (“Only Murders in the Building”). His costar and 2022 opponent, Steve Martin, is looking to make a comeback, as are six-time contender Larry David (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) and Jon Cryer, who won in 2012 for “Two and a Half Men” and now headlines “Extended Family.”

While viewers around the world were going crazy about Shogun, the second season of Tokyo Vice, released at the same time, went almost unnoticed. In fact, these two series are similar – Tokyo Vice also shows the bizarre Japanese morals and customs through the eyes of a white stranger who arrived in a distant country at the wrong time.
Tokyo Vice Was Undeservedly Ignored by Viewers
Unfortunately, Tokyo Vice is no stranger to unfair treatment and audience ignorance: two years ago, the crime procedural went under the radar in the same way and deservedly received the status of "the best show that no one watches.” Meanwhile, Tokyo Vice’s second season received an impressive 92% rating from both critics and viewers on Rotten Tomatoes.

Guy Ritchie is back with The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Based on what is allegedly the first “Black Ops” mission it’s a variation on The Dirty Dozen and all the knock-offs that followed, right up to and including Inglourious Basterds.
The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare opens with a boat having just been boarded by several members of the German Navy. As they pour gasoline over the deck, they tell its occupants they have the choice of staying on board and burning to death, or jumping overboard and drowning. For some reason, however, they don’t seem very worried.
From there we jump back 25 days, to Churchill watching newsreel footage about Hitler’s U-boats keeping American troops from entering the war.

Audiences love a bit of history. Kings, Queens, dates, battles, all of that stuff. And a big part of the fun in watching a historical drama is knowing that you are watching a version of events that have actually happened. Yes, there might not be any material evidence that J. Robert Oppenheimer’s wife was imagining him having sex with his mistress during his private security hearing, but enough of the other details are right that we don’t know for certain she didn’t.
We like learning about the small personal dramas behind the big events, and seeing how people lived and loved and worked in an age before laptops and phones. Audiences want to connect with something real. And if those historical dramas don’t get all of the details exactly right, then that’s fine too! Some people get annoyed at Neil DeGrasse Tyson-style pedantry, but...

Our Flag Means Death was cancelled by Max earlier this year, which was hugely upsetting for fans of the pirate comedy. There was hope that Our Flag Means Death might find a new home on another streaming service, but creator David Jenkins has confirmed that the series is on its way to Davy Jones’s locker.
“I can officially confirm that we’ve reached the end of the road,” Jenkins wrote on Instagram. “At least as far as this sweet show is concerned. After many complimentary meetings, conversations, etc it seems there is no alternate home for our crew. Thank you to all of you who sent us out with tremendous love and care. Your campaign was noticed across the industry. But more importantly it made all of us who worked on this show better able to deal with the loss.“
Jenkins continued, “To you wonderful fans: thank you. You are lovely and earnest.

Our Flag Means Death creator David Jenkins has raised the white flag on his former Max comedy finding a new home.
“I can officially confirm that we’ve reached the end of the road,” Jenkins posted on Instagram. “At least as far as this sweet show is concerned. After many complimentary meetings, conversations, etc., it seems there is no alternate home for our crew.”
Max canceled the comedy starring Rhys Darby and exec producer Taika Waititi in January after a critically acclaimed two-season run.
Praised for its queer storylines, Our Flag Means Death has an impressive 94 percent score among critics and 93 percent rating with viewers on Rotten Tomatoes. Season one of the series consisted of 10 episodes and aired in March 2022, with the renewal coming for a shortened eight-episode run that wrapped in October.
Fans of Flag were vocal, launching campaigns to save the show and fundraising for billboards in New York and London.

Just to be clear, Apple TV+’s The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin is not a spinoff of Max’s Our Flag Means Death. The two shows do not share the same creative team, nor the same characters. No one involved with either has ever suggested they might in any way be related.
Nevertheless, a viewer might be forgiven for presuming that they could be. Both are cheerfully anachronistic comedies about 18th century Englishmen fleeing conventional society to turn outlaw. Both heroes raise eyebrows in their new milieu for their naivete, their sartorial flair and their distaste for violence. Both nevertheless win the loyalty of a quirky crew who find they quite like this softer version of their bloodthirsty trade.
But if Dick Turpin borrows much from Our Flag Means Death‘s vibe, it shares much less of its earnest substance. This one is silliness all the way down,...

When Hannah Gadsby entered a deal at Netflix in 2022 with the goal of broadening “a notoriously transphobic industry,” they set plans for a multi-comic special featuring genderqueer comics from around the globe. Now titled “Gender Agenda,” that project will debut on March 5 with a lineup of seven performers.
With Gadsby as curator and host, “Gender Agenda” will give the stage to Jes Tom, Alok, Asha Ward, Chloe Petts, DeAnne Smith, Krishna Istha and Mx. Dahlia Belle.
Tom has written for Max’s “Our Flag Means Death” and recently wrapped the off-Broadway run of “Less Lonely,” their one-person show presented by Elliot Page. It’s been nearly two years since the premiere of “Tokyo Vice,” in which director Michael Mann introduced us to yet another lonely male obsessive. As the sole Caucasian employee of Tokyo’s largest newspaper, Jake Adelstein (Ansel Elgort) — a real-life journalist and executive producer of the show, which is loosely based on his memoir of the same name — stood out like a sore thumb. He also acted as a Virgil guiding American viewers through the Japanese underworld at the turn of the millennium. Jake investigates organized crime via an informal partnership with Hiroto Katagiri (Ken Watanabe), a policeman who doesn’t fight the yakuza so much as help preserve the equilibrium among their competing factions. Samantha (Rachel Keller), a Mormon missionary turned apostate, served a similar purpose to Jake, but as a guide to hostess bars, a source of paid yet strictly nonsexual company unfamiliar to Westerners.

If you, like us, were saddened to hear that Our Flag Means Death won't return for a third season, then here's something to cheer the heart of anyone looking for a new hapless-numpty-looks-to-kick-start-a-life-of-crime comedy. Take a look at the trailer…

Fifth Season, formerly named Endeavor Content, is also financing.
Written by DeYoung, Friendship centers on a mild-mannered man named Craig, whose life is perfectly balanced, with Subway sandwiches and Marvel movies, a job he enjoys and a happy home life with a wife and son. Tim Robinson (I Think You Should Leave), Paul Rudd (Only Murders in the Building) and Kate Mara (Class of ’09) have been set to star in Friendship, a new comedy from Fifth Season and BoulderLight Pictures.
Pic centers on Craig Waterman (Robinson), who enjoys his life. He likes New Balance shoes, Subway sandwiches, and Marvel movies. He lives in the suburbs with his wife, Tami, and son, Steven. He’s happy to work at Universal Digital, a company that helps brands make their products more habit-forming. Craig sees no reason to change anything or make new friends… until weatherman Brian moves into the neighborhood. Mysterious yet friendly, macho but vulnerable, Brian (Rudd) transforms everything for Craig, but Craig’s obsessive and childlike nature threatens to ruin the friendship, and possibly everything else in his life.
Friendship is the first feature from director Andrew DeYoung, who also penned the script and is exec producing alongside Tracy Rosenblum.

When I think about Matthew Vaughn's directing career, the image that primarily comes to mind is that of a provocateur, a filmmaker who enjoys prodding his audience a little while bucking familiar conventions. He famously did that with "Kick-Ass" in 2010, doubled down on provocation with the "Kingsman" movies, and is poised to do it again with his latest spy film, "Argylle," which hits theaters today. He seems to prefer entering through the side door rather than taking a head-on approach, opting for more unorthodox methods of storytelling wherever possible.
But that wasn't always the case. 2007's "Stardust," Vaughn's second directorial feature, does not have the cultural reputation as some of his other films, but upon rewatch, it was surprising to see Vaughn operating in a more straightforward zone -- one that doesn't seem as desperate to push the envelope and is confident enough in the nuts and bolts...

The Flight Attendant will not ready itself for another takeoff: TVLine has learned that the acclaimed, Kaley Cuoco-led dramedic thriller is ending after two seasons on Max.
“What started out as an attention-grabbing book cover quickly evolved into an extraordinary flight of a lifetime,” Cuoco said in a statement. “I always envisioned Tfa as a limited series and thanks to an incredible creative team, we were able to deliver two thrilling seasons. Personally, playing Cassie has been a dream come true and I am so grateful for everyone who played a part in bringing this extremely original series to life.

The Flight Attendant will not be returning for a third season. The show, which was originally set as a limited series, aired two seasons on Max, with the second season ending in May 2022.
The move follows comments from star and executive producer Kaley Cuoco after the second season that the “plane had landed.” “I just kind of feel like we just ended,” she told People at the time.
The first season, which premiered in November 2020, followed Cuoco’s alcoholic, globe-trotting flight attendant Cassie Bowden who became embroiled in an espionage plot following her affair with a first class passenger, who winds up murdered after their night together.
The second season saw Bowden return with a fresh start in Los Angeles, sober and moonlighting as a CIA asset in her spare time. But when an overseas assignment leads her to inadvertently witness a murder, she becomes entangled in another international intrigue.

Our Flag Means Death fans are really doing all they can to “Renew as a Crew,” following Max‘s cancellation of the pirate rom-com starring Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi. Created by David Jenkins, the series tracks the unlikely love story between ill-equipped pirate wannabe Stede Bonnet (Darby) and the infamously fierce Blackbeard, a.k.a. Ed (Waititi). Originally debuting on Max in 2022, Our Flag Means Death returned for its second season in October 2023 and was unceremoniously canceled on January 9 of this year. (Credit: Nicola Dove/Max) But the show’s fervent fanbase isn’t taking the cancellation as the final word, rallying to save the series for a third and final season as intended by Jenkins. Their efforts have brought the “Renew as a Crew,” campaign all the way to Times Square as fans raised funds to run the advertisement reading “Save Our Flag Means Death.” But that’s...

Max has opted not to proceed with a third season of Issa Rae’s comedy series Rap Sh!t. The decision comes a month after the show’s Season 2 finale dropped on the streamer.
The second season of Rap Sh!t, originally scheduled for an August 10 debut, was pushed to November because of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes with the hope of giving it a better shot by having the creative team and cast promote it.
Max, along with other streamers, has been trimming its lineup of originals. Rap Sh!t‘s cancellation leaves five returning comedy series on the platform: Hacks, And Just Like That…, The Sex Lives of College Girls, Peacemaker and the recently renewed Bookie.
