"Haikyuu!!" is one of the biggest anime in the world right now and certainly the biggest sports one — and it's easy to see why. This is the perfect gateway into sports anime, and a show that may make you fall in love with volleyball (even if you have never watched a second of volleyball) thanks to its sense of camaraderie, compelling and memorable characters, and ability to make any volleyball match seem like the most exciting life-or-death game in the world.
After four seasons of high school boys playing volleyball and making audiences emotional, "Haikyuu!!" is heading to its conclusion, with the Karasuno High School Volleyball Club facing the lights and finishing their final tournament together before the seniors graduate. To bring the story to a close, we're getting feature films that finish off the story, much like "The First Slam Dunk" did 30 years after the anime ended.

Demon Slayer: Hashira Training Arc Episode 3 set the trend for what we can expect from the upcoming episodes of the anime. Most of it was anime original content, and focused on the training that Tanjiro and the other Demon Slayers went through at the hands of the Hashiras.
In the previous episode, Tanjiro shone brightly despite the gruelling regime that was set by Tengen Uzui. The fourth episode too will continue the trend, as the Mist Hashira – Muichiro Tokito – will step in to train these budding warriors and prep for the upcoming fight.
But along with the training, we are getting crumbs of Sanemi and Obanai talking about the mysterious castle they encountered, building the mystery!!

Demon Slayer anime is certainly hurtling towards its endgame, going by how the situation is shaping up! While the opening episode of the Hashira Training arc was relatively light-hearted, it did touch upon the aftermath of the Swordsmith village arc, and the especially the new demon slayer marks which Mitsuri and Muichiro received.
As a bonus we got a revelation of Muzan’s past.
The upcoming Demon Slayer Hashira Training Arc episodes will build on the discussion that Hashira had, and move on to the training that Tanjiro, Inosuke and Zenitsu will have to undergo.
While Tengen returns in the role of a teacher, Tamayo too will be making an appearance, playing a pivotal role in episode 2, and also the upcoming events.
As a battle with Muzan looms on the horizon, the stakes keep getting higher in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba.

If the '90s had the surprise hit "Dragon Ball Z," the '00s had "Naruto," and the 2010s had "Attack on Titan," then the 2020s unequivocally belong to "Demon Slayer." The manga by Koyuharu Gotouge and its anime adaptation by studio Ufotable took the world by storm the moment they debuted, with the manga becoming one of the best-selling ever, while the anime became an instant hit. The first film, "Demon Slayer: Mugen Train," overcame Hayao Miyazaki's classic "Spirited Away" to become the highest-grossing Japanese film ever in Japan and the highest-grossing film of 2020 worldwide.
Even its subsequent movies, which are literally just compilations of previously-released season finales plus the first episode of the following season, have made some serious cash, leading us to dub the latest movie, "To the Hashira Training," as a savior of cinema at a time when the box office desperately needed help. Action shonen anime dominates the medium, for better and worse. Every big franchise eventually gets an original movie — or a dozen. "One Piece" has 15, "Dragon Ball" 24, and "Naruto" has 11.
The problem is that these mostly tend to be non canonical movies without much consequence. They are cute, fun adventures, for sure. Still, they are more concerned with providing fan service than providing substance. The best ones are those that manage to make the most out of their non canonical status and present truly experimental movies, like the best of the "One Piece" films.
Now comes "Spy x Family: Code White," a movie based on one of the most popular manga, published in Shonen Jump magazine — which makes this technically a shonen anime movie, regardless of its actual genre. The premise is simple. Loid is a spy, Yor is an assassin, and together they fake a family for convenience (and for...

The past few years have taught us an awful lot about what the future of moviegoing might look like. It's an ever-evolving beast in the aftermath of the pandemic but one fairly certain trend has emerged: Anime has found its audience in North America. This has once again firmed up with the release of "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba—To the Hashira Training," the latest in a series of theatrical releases from the wildly popular anime series. It may not have topped the charts like "Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Movie: Mugen Train" did in 2021, but it helped fill plenty of seats in theaters that otherwise would have been at best sparsely occupied.

Paramount’s musical biopic “Bob Marley: One Love” ruled again over a barren box office landscape.
The film added $13.5 million from 3,925 North American theaters in its second weekend of release, a 53% decline from its debut. “One Love” has been a surprise box office success with $71.1 million domestically and $120 million globally. It cost $70 million, and the studio only gets to keep roughly half of ticket sales, so it’ll need to keep singing in theaters to justify its cost.
“Bob Marley” topped the charts for the second consecutive weekend despite three new releases. Sony and Crunchyroll’s anime sequel “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba — To the Hashira Training” fared the best among newcomers with $11.5 million from 1,949 theaters — enough for the No. 2 spot.
Hilary Swank’s inspirational drama “Ordinary Angels” opened in third place with an uninspired $6.2 million from 3,020 venues, while director Ethan Coen’s comedic thriller “Drive-Away Dolls” crash-landed in eighth...

Movie theaters have had a rough start to the year, but amid the sparse February release slate "Bob Marley: One Love" has found the stage it needed. The biopic from director Reinaldo Marcus Green has passed the $100 million mark at the box office in 10 days, including a record-breaking opening in Jamaica. The film has also held on to the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office in its second weekend, fending off fresh competition from "Drive-Away Dolls," "Ordinary Angels," and "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba."
10 days into its theatrical run, "One Love" has grossed $61.4 million domestically and $39.7 million overseas for a total of $101.1 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It's now looking at a second weekend in the region of $13-14 million at the domestic box office, which even on the low end equates to a very respectable 53% hold.

In what is shaping up to be a muted weekend at the box office, Sony and Crunchyroll’s “Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba -To the Hashira Training” earned $1.8 million in Thursday previews, while Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company’s inspirational drama “Ordinary Angels” picked up a paltry $285,000.
The weekend’s other new release, Focus Features’ comedic thriller “Drive-Away Dolls,” didn’t report preview grosses, which does not augur well for its commercial prospects. Despite the influx of movies, “Bob Marley: One Love” is expected to retain its spot at No. 1 after scoring an impressive $28.6 million over last weekend and $52 million through the Presidents holiday frame. “Bob Marley” should earn between $12 million to $14 million in its sophomore outing.
“To the Hashira Training” is projected to earn roughly $10 million, which would be on par with its predecessor, 2023’s anime adventure “Demon Slayer: To the Swordsmith Village,” which earned $10.1 million in first weekend.

Despite three new releases, Paramount’s Bob Marley biographical drama “One Love” is projected to top the box office again.
This weekend’s newcomers, Hilary Swank’s inspirational drama “Ordinary Angels” and director Ethan Coen’s comedic thriller “Drive-Away Dolls,” are targeting single digits in their debuts. With those paltry ticket sales, “Bob Marley: One Love” looks to repeat No. 1 after scoring a better-than-expected $28.6 million over the weekend and $52 million through the extended holiday frame. Sony and Crunchyroll’s “Demon Slayer” sequel “Kimetsu no Yaiba – To the Hashira Training” also opens this weekend and is aiming for about $10 million to start. Anime is an enormous source of entertainment and has numerous genres that fans can choose from. One of the most prominent genres is sports, where Haikyu hails as one of the best, if not the best, sports anime ever. The franchise recently released a new movie, which is already breaking records.
Haikyu Movie Poster
The latest addition to the Haikyu franchise, Haikyu: Battle at the Garbage Dump, broke a major record on its very first day of release. The movie accumulated ¥890M yen on the first day, significantly higher than the latest Demon Slayer: Hashira training arc movie.
Haikyu: The Dumpster Battle beats Demon Slayer: Mugen Train in terms of first-day box office collection
The sports genre has a wide variety of options to choose from as a viewer, ranging from football, basketball, swimming, volleyball, and more. Numerous anime in the sports genre are amazing, but none hold a candle to Haikyu.

Madame Web was one of the most anticipated movies of 2024. There were a lot of expectations from the movie, especially after knowing that it might be connected to Spider-Man’s timeline. But after the first day, the film received a mediocre response from the audience, something which was reflected in the box office results of the movie as well.
On the other hand, Demon Slayer: The Roar of Victory came out two weeks before Madame Web and has been doing a great job at the box office. Even though both of them follow different genres, it is fair to say that Tanjiro and his friends have surpassed Dakota Johnson’s first titular role as a superhero. In simpler words, Madame Web is lagging behind The Roar of Victory.

Crunchyroll, a distribution company that specializes in anime, has acquired North American rights for the film “The Concierge.”
It is set to be released by Aniplex in Japan on Oct. 20 and is expected to come to Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures theatrical territories in 2024.
Yoshimi Itazu (“Welcome to the Ballroom”) directed “The Concierge,” an adaptation of Tsuchika Nishimura’s “The Concierge at Hokkyoku Department Store.” The story follows a trainee concierge named Akino, who works at a store that caters exclusively to animals. She runs around to fulfill the whims and wishes of customers — extinct species are most valued — with a myriad of needs in her pursuit to become a full-fledged concierge.
“The word ‘no’ doesn’t exist in a concierge’s dictionary!” Akino laments in the trailer. But she has a special regard for Hokkyoku. “This is a store for people who are doing their best,” she later says.

Gita Rebbapragada grew up reading manga. Becoming the chief marketing officer of Crunchyroll, the world’s leading streamer of anime, was “like this kismet thing that happened,” she said.
Math was her favorite subject in school, she told TheWrap for this week’s Office With a View, but “I also loved art. To me, they’re like this perfect blend of the two things about design and stories.”
That led her to the burgeoning field of performance-based marketing, which she called “a marriage between art and science.”
That passion for math and a love for how entertainment connects people brought her to Sony as an SVP of marketing in 2018. She moved over to Funimation, which Sony combined with Crunchyroll in 2021.
Combining the marketing organizations and catering to the quirks of anime fans, she realized, required a common skill: listening.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” continues to be a box office high-scorer.
The video game adaptation has crossed the $500 million mark at the global box office, shattering records with the gusto that its title character usually amasses via power-ups. To date, the animated adventure has earned $260.3 million domestically and $248.4 million internationally. That lifts its worldwide haul to $508.7 million. It is now the highest-grossing film of 2023 at both the global and domestic box office, surpassing “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”. More important, it also makes “The Super Mario Bros. As the global streaming business underwent a surprise, secular reassessment last year, Sony’s anime service Crunchyroll found the whole industry suddenly contemplating the same strategies it had been prioritizing for years. Out was the gusher approach to content spending in pursuit of limitless subscriber growth. In were financial discipline, multi-tiered subscription options and a more diversified approach to revenue generation.
The Crunchyroll of today is actually a merged service comprised of two former U.S.-based entities: Funimation, an anime platform founded by industry pioneer Gen Fukunaga in 1994, which Sony snapped up for $143 million in 2017; and Crunchyroll, the then-second-largest dedicated anime service, which the Japanese entertainment giant bought from AT&T in 2020 in a deal valued at $1.18 billion. Sony once was thought to be paying a steep premium in the latter acquisition, but given the success and opportunity the company has created for itself in consolidating the anime niche, many...

It's the start of a new week, which means another anime film making big bucks at the box office. At this point, it shouldn't come as a big surprise that the release of an anime film, especially one based on a hugely popular TV show -- let alone one as popular as "Demon Slayer" -- would make bank, but here we are.
"Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba -- To the Swordsmith Village" took the fourth spot at the domestic box office in its opening weekend with an estimated $10.12 million gross (via Box Office Mojo). This is just under "Cocaine Bear" and its $11 million haul in its second weekend. Indeed, the first weekend of March was a pretty great time for anime fans in general. Not only did we get a new "Demon Slayer" movie in theaters, but "Attack on Titan" made its triumphant return with the first half of its apocalyptic finale,...

It’s the battle of the threequels at the weekend box office. Michael B. Jordan’s sports drama “Creed III” is taking on two-time champ “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” at the movies, though the heavyweight boxer is expected to emerge victorious over Marvel’s tiniest Avenger.
“Creed III,” which Jordan directed in his feature filmmaking debut, is projected to earn a trilogy-best $36 million to $40 million from 4,007 North American theaters in its opening weekend. Those ticket sales will easily be enough to defeat Disney’s superhero tentpole “Ant-Man 3,” which looks to add $16 million to $19 million in its third weekend of release. So far, the comic book adventure has grossed $170 million domestically and $366 million globally.
Come Sunday, though, the third “Creed” installment needs to leave the ring within those tracking expectations to notch the best start in the spinoff franchise. The original “Creed,” which re-launched the decades-old “Rocky” film series in 2015, debuted to $29.6 million,...

The 2023 box office hasn’t been doing so bad over the first two months of the year with a number of breakout hits, and the likes of James Cameron‘s “Avatar: The Way of Water” and DreamWorks Animation’s “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” holding onto business since their pre-Christmas releases. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
In theory, March is going to be one of the best months outside the coming summer with four back-to-back franchise sequels, starting off with this week’s “Creed III.” The MGM spin-off sequel to Sylvester Stallone‘s long-running “Rocky” franchise introduced Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed (son of Apollo Creed) back in 2015 for the Ryan Coogler-directed “Creed.” Eight years later, Jordan is trying his hand at directing by making “Creed III” his directorial debut.

March isn’t just going to come in like a lion and leave like a lamb, because it’s going to feel more like summer at the box office. “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” (Warner Bros.) – March 17
The second superhero sequel of 2023 puts Zachary Levi back into the cape of … well, he doesn’t exactly have a name quite yet, but he does have a family of fellow orphans with superpowers. This time around, they must face the daughters of Atlas, as played by Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu and Rachel Zegler (“West Side Story”), who are causing havoc for the Shazam family’s Philadelphia hometown. The earlier movie opened with $53.5 million in April 2019, and there’s little reason why “Fury of...

Aeon Entertainment and IMAX Corporation announced an agreement Wednesday that will open seven new IMAX auditoriums with Laser systems across Japan in 2023.
Under the deal, all seven systems will be installed in existing multiplexes by summer 2023 in areas largely untapped by IMAX. This is the second major deal between IMAX and Aeon — a leading Japanese exhibition company with 800 screens nationwide — in under a year. The two agreed during the 2022 CinemaCon to create two new locations outside Tokyo and Osaka.
IMAX has nearly tripled its network in Japan over the last 10 years, from just 16 locations in 2012 to 41 today. Japan was IMAX’s third highest grossing global market in 2022, with over 73 million in theatrical revenue. It was also home to six of IMAX’s top 15 highest grossing locations. Thirty-one IMAX auditoriums generated theatrical grosses of more than 1 million each in 2022 — a figure second only to the United States.

2022 has been another big year for anime and manga in the United States. This fall's "Chainsaw Man" anime is earning rave reviews. "Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero" earned 32 million worldwide in its first week. Netflix's "Cyberpunk Edgerunners" convinced folks to give the messy "Cyberpunk 2077" another shot, rocketing the game up the Steam rankings. On the manga front, the blockbuster success of Junji Ito has led publishers to take chances on other horror artists like Kazuo Umezu and Kanako Inuki. There's even a fledgling indie manga movement in the United States, with small publishers like Glacier Bay Books and Star Fruit Books distributing titles that might never otherwise see the light of day. We're long past the time of executives chopping up anime series in the editing docket to be marketable to American children. Anime and manga are now respected in their own right, if only because it sells.

Long Japan’s cinema industry leader, Toho is poised to reassert itself in 2023 with a muscular new distribution slate, following an off-year.
One surefire reason is that anime maestro and box office king Miyazaki Hayao is bringing out his first film since the 2013 “When the Wind Rises.” Called “How Do You Live?” and inspired by a 1937 Yoshino Genzaburo novel of the same English title, the film is confirmed to open in Japan on July 14, with Toho distributing.
Details, including story and scale of release, are still in short supply, but fans are expected to crowd theaters to see what may be the 81-year-old Miyazaki’s swan-song.
Also, to commemorate the 1954 release of the Honda Ishiro classic “Godzilla,” Toho will release the next instalment of the series on Nov. 3, the same day the first-ever Godzilla opened in Japan. Other than the director, sci-fi and fantasy specialist Yamazaki Takashi, Toho has revealed little about the new film,...

The box office has struggled to get back to its former glory in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, with theatrical windows shortened and both studios and audiences pivoting to streaming movies rather than seeing them on the big screen. But the softening of the box office has only highlighted the fact that tie-in movies for anime shows are serious contenders. In August, "Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero" debuted at #1 in the U.S. with a 20.1 million opening, and "One Piece Film: Red" came close to toppling "Black Adam...
