Blackpink have announced the release of Blackpink the Movie via Trafalgar Releasing, and Cj 4DPlex in South Korea and Japan. Marking the K-pop quartet’s fifth anniversary of their Square One project debut, the film will hit theaters worldwide on August 4th and 8th. Tickets go on sale on June 30th.

It's hard to believe that the K-pop girl group Blackpink has only been around for a few years, but the band actually started much earlier than its public debut. Netflix's new documentary Blackpink: Light Up the Sky follows the megapopular group from the earliest beginnings up to their superstardom, revealing how the band came to be and how long it took for them to come together.
Blackpink's story started back in 2010, when the individual members of the group auditioned for Yg Entertainment, according to a 2019 Billboard profile. Yg is a major firm in the K-pop industry and recruits young musicians to become "trainees" in a highly structured system that eventually turns them into "idols," or highly produced pop stars with a particular image curated by the entertainment company. The members of Blackpink all auditioned individually and eventually made it through several rounds to join Yg.

After weeks of teasing a “surprise feature,” the four-piece girl group confirmed that Selena Gomez will appear on their upcoming single, the follow-up to their record-breaking comeback track, “How You Like That.” The as-yet-untitled new song is due out August 28th and will be the second collaboration for Blackpink this year, following “Sour Candy,” their Lady Gaga duet that appeared on Gaga’s album, Chromatica.
