October 30, 1938 was a Sunday. Felton wouldn't have been coming from work.
When talking about the 'War of the Worlds' radio broadcast in 1938 the lieutenant says, "My wife and I heard it come over the car radio. All we could think of was to get back home to see our children before the final attack." Assuming he had married at the age of 16 and had 2 kids by the time he was 18, he would have to be 87 in the show's 2007 setting. However, he was merely reading a survivors account of the events from that night, just as Vera mentions a survivor driving all night across the country in a towel to see his fiancée.
The day after the War of the Worlds broadcast (originally broadcast 10/31/1938), Felton Metz is sitting by the radio listening to Glenn Miller's "Moonlight Serenade". The commercial version of that song, as heard in this episode, wasn't released until the following year.
