Madame Web always had a steep hill to climb after becoming meme-fodder immediately after the release of its first (and only) trailer, but right from the opening scene with Cassie's mother in the Amazon researching spiders just before she died, it was clear that Sony Pictures' latest Ssu movie was... probably not going to be a big hit.
To be fair, Madame Web did end up surpassing (just about) the $100 million mark worldwide, but with a reported budget of around $80 - $100 million, and an abysmal 11% on Rotten Tomatoes, we can't imagine seeing much more from Miss Web and her teenage Spider-Women pals anytime soon.
Some felt the movie wasn't quite as bad as it was made out to be, while others were of the opinion that it crossed into so bad it's good territory.
We didn't review Madame Web here on Cbm when it was released in theaters, but if you're interested,...

Edgar Wright will direct a remake of Barbarella starring Sydney Sweeney, and here are details of the upcoming film.
It was reported last year thar Edgar Wright was going to direct a remake of Barbarella. The original 1968 film, adapted from the French comic book series by Jean-Claude Forest and directed by Roger Vadim, followed Jane Fonda as an astronaut from the 41st century. She sets out to find and stop the evil scientist Durand Durand, whose Positronic Ray threatens to bring evil back into the galaxy.
Jane Fonda has repeatedly claimed that she pushed its producer, Dino De Laurentiis to make a feminist take on the film many times but he always refused.
According to Deadline, the new film is now officially in development, with Wright directing from a screenplay by Jane Goldman and her daughter Honey. Sydney Sweeney will star in the picture too, we now learn.

Jerry Seinfeld’s highly touted (and largely panned) feature directorial debut, “Unfrosted,” spent four days leading Netflix’s top 10 movie chart before another Netflix original, “Mother of the Bride” starring Brooke Shields, took the slot before the thematically appropriate weekend holiday.
“Unfrosted” led for just four days, with “Shrek” from 2001 leading midweek before the debut of “Bride.” The Dreamworks animated classic is still in second place, while Seinfeld’s Pop-Tarts comedy dropped to fourth.
“Bride” comes from director Mark Waters. Perhaps best known for his “Freaky Friday” remake and the original “Mean Girls,” Waters went on to direct “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” “Vampire Academy,” and “Bad Santa 2.” In the new rom-com, Shields is a mom who realizes the father of her future son-in-law broke her heart decades ago.

When Madame Web hit theaters on Valentine’s Day, movie audiences met Cassandra Webb for the first time, and they were forever changed. On its surface, the film tells the story of a public servant drawn to the ultimate public service — clairvoyant superheroism. At heart, it’s a tale of failure, friendship, and ultimately redemption.
Directed by S.J. Clarkson, Madame Web is the latest entry in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, and it’s now streaming on Netflix. The Marvel multiverse continues to grow, and there’s no better time to catch up on the thriving world of characters who are peripherally related to Spider-Man. (Spoiler alert: Her web really does connect us all.)
Stream it right now.
So much happens. The film kicks off deep in the Amazon, where pregnant scientist Constance Webb (Bishé) is searching for a spider with special abilities. But she’s not alone. As Cassie Webb...

When Sydney Sweeney brandishes a curiously phallic laser gun for her reimagining of Barbarella, she could be doing so under the watchful eye of Edgar Wright. According to Deadline, Wright is in talks to direct Barbarella, with Jane and Honey Goldman negotiating to co-write the script.
As Deadline notes, bringing Jane Goldman aboard shows how serious Sony is about assigning strong talent to Sweeney’s dream project. Jane Goldman’s writing credits include screenplays for Kick-Ass, Kingsman: The Secret Service, X-Men: First Class, Stardust, the upcoming Kingsman: The Blue Blood, and more.
During the backlash for Sony’s abysmal Marvel film Madame Web, Sweeney said she joined the film to position herself to pitch Anyone But You. The rom-com was an admirable success, with $219M+ worldwide. With Sweeney being a bankable star at the studio, Sony is ready to shoot her into space for an action-packed remake of Roger Vadim...

The Barbarella feature starring Sydney Sweeney is getting more oxygen.
Edgar Wright is in talks to direct the film for Sony Pictures, with Jane Goldman and Honey Ross in talks to write the script, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. The project is still in early development and is planned as a new take on the character that originated in a French comic series from Jean-Claude Forest.
Barbarella, a mercenary who travels the universe, was portrayed by Jane Fonda in a 1968 movie version that has become a cult favorite. Sweeney’s involvement in the new film was announced in 2022.
This continues Sweeney’s relationship with Sony, with the actress having starred late last year alongside Glen Powell in the studio’s rom-com Anyone but You before appearing with Dakota Johnson in this year’s superhero flick Madame Web.

The Sydney Sweeney-led “Barbarella” film is taking shape, with Edgar Wright in talks to direct the picture for Sony. Jane Goldman and Honey Ross are in talks to pen the script.
Wright, best known for making the satiric zombie film “Shaun of the Dead,” is next set to direct Glen Powell in an adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Running Man.” Wright’s other directorial credits include “Last Night in Soho,” “Hot Fuzz,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” and “Baby Driver.”
The project also marks another step in Sweeney’s continued relationship with Sony Pictures — she’s most recently starred in “Anyone but You” and “Madame Web” for the studio. With all the harsh criticism that Marvel has faced within the last several months, it seems like the overall backlash wasn’t enough for the superhero giant.

Though the movie still was completely crushed by a record number of critics and moviegoers, Madame Web might have a chance to be reconsidered as the superhero film is set to soon arrive on Netflix.

Cinematically speaking, spiders are having a miniature moment. On April 12, 2024, fans of creature features were treated to Kiah Roache-Turner's "Sting," a film about an alien spider that grows to an enormous size and terrorizes the denizens of a run-down apartment building. Then, on April 26, the United States was granted access to Sébastien Vanicek's "Infested" (French title: "Vermines"), a film about many spiders that grow to enormous sizes and terrorize the denizens of a run-down apartment building. These two films, of course, came hot on the heels of the February release of "Madame Web," the best Spider-Man-adjacent, non-Marvel-Cinematic-Universe-related mid-budget clairvoyance caper film ever made.

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is not off to a good start this year, as the cinematic universe opened 2024 with a majestic flop ‘Madame Web.’ Luckily there are ample opportunities to turn this around since there are two notable releases awaiting us this year, ‘Kraven the Hunter,’ and the final installment of the ‘Venom’ franchise.

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe isn’t doing so hot this year. Their movie “Madame Web” flopped big time. But there’s hope on the horizon with two big releases coming up: “Kraven the Hunter” and the last “Venom” movie.
Yep, you read it right. “Venom: The Last Dance” is the final flick in the series. Some folks are guessing Venom might join the MCU later on, but that’s all just talk for now.
Now, when it comes to rumors and speculations, details about the main movie plot are scarce. We’re mostly piecing things together from leaks. A big one came from some merch handed out to the stunt crew. This merch hints that Lasher, another symbiote, might be the villain in the next movie.

Shooting has wrapped on Venom: The Last Dance and with a little over five months before it arrives in theaters, we're hoping an official first look is somewhere on the horizon.
Sony Pictures could do with a win after delivering flops like Morbius and Madame Web, but only time will tell whether the Venom threequel can give them one. After all, most fans aren't expecting much from Kraven the Hunter, a movie recently pushed back to December 13.
Now, a first look at the stunt team's crew gift has been revealed and it may reveal Venom: The Last Dance's big bad.
As you can see in the X post below, green is being used for the "3" in the movie's logo, while three green slashes can also be seen across the Symbiote's unmistakable face.
Looking at the comics, we have to believe this is meant as a reference to Lasher.

Netflix is an amazing place because its library boasts not only its originals, but also licensed movies and shows that people either didn't have the motivation or the opportunity to watch before. Not all of these movies and TV shows become smash hits, or even get rediscovered — a bad project usually stays bad, except for the extra views. Still, a Netflix subscription is a great way to watch something you didn't want to spend a movie ticket on.
Sony's Spider-Man Universe films are particularly notable in this regard. Following Netflix's exclusive deal with Sony in 2021, a number of films, including Ssu, have found their way to the streaming service sometime after their theatrical release.
Now, the critically and commercially disappointing Madame Web is coming to Netflix's library, and it's happening much sooner than originally expected. Let's take a look at which regions and when the movie will be available for streaming on Netflix.

Welcome back, physical media fans. It's time for another Blu-ray round-up, and this particular edition features a study in contrasts. On one hand, we have what many will consider to be one of the best movies of the year: "Dune: Part Two" (you can read our review right here). On the other, we also have what is arguably one of the worst movies of the year: Sony's woefully inept "Madame Web" (check out our review here). But that's not all! We also have new 4K releases of several great "older" titles. Throw in the latest from one of the Coen Brothers and a Jason Statham action pic as well, and you've got yourself a jam-packed Blu-ray round-up. So keep spinning those discs and read on.

The idea of an expanded Sony’s Spider-Man universe began in 2013, with plans to launch spin-off films, including one centered on Venom, following ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2.’ However, due to the film’s disappointment, Sony abandoned these plans and collaborated with Marvel Studios in 2015, and since then, Spider-Man has been one of the main characters in MCU.
However, despite Ssu movies generally receiving mixed to bad reviews (looking at your ‘Morbius’ & ‘Madame Web’), the Ssu continued and now has plenty of live-action and animated projects in development focusing both on Spider-Man’s supporting characters and his villains.
Now according to leaker and scooper with so-so track record MyTimeToShineHello, Sony is ready to be hurt again and is developing a movie focusing on Spider-Gwen.

The concept of an expanded Sony Spider-Man universe emerged in 2013, aiming to launch spin-off films post-‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2,’ including one centered on Venom. However, following the film’s underwhelming performance, Sony abandoned these plans. Instead, they partnered with Marvel Studios in 2015, integrating Spider-Man into the MCU.
Despite mixed or negative reviews for Ssu movies like ‘Morbius’ and ‘Madame Web,’ Sony persisted with the universe. Presently, numerous live-action and animated projects are in development, exploring both Spider-Man’s supporting characters and his adversaries.
Now, as per the somewhat reliable leaker MyTimeToShineHello, Sony is bracing for potential disappointment once more, gearing up to develop a film centered on Spider-Gwen.

Madame Web should have been a game-changer for Sony Pictures. While Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage were box office hits, neither received overly glowing reviews and the awful Morbius left any possible goodwill fans had for the studio bleeding out on the floor.
With Madame Web billed as a standalone adventure and a movie that finally put the spotlight on some of the heroes from Spider-Man's world, it looked like the stage was being set for a new female-led superhero franchise. Three Spider-Women swinging into the action under the watchful eye of Cassandra Webb seemed like a genius move, but when it hit theaters...well, you know the rest.
One of the biggest critical and commercial flops the genre has ever seen, Madame Web made it clear changes need to be made. It's likely too late for Kraven the Hunter and Venom: The Last Dance, but Sony...

Sweeney is set to play Christy Martin in a film that will be directed by War Machine’s David Michod. The project is set to go to market at Cannes next week.
Following the commercial success of their 2023 romantic comedy, Anyone But You, both Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell have been building their careers based on the perception within Hollywood that they can now ‘open’ a movie. Selling a movie based on star power continues to be important in the kind of mid to low-budget films that Sweeney seems intent on making: her recent nun-centric horror flick Immaculate was reportedly made for just $9m and as well as being a lot of fun, the film made that back and more during its theatrical run.
According to World Of Reel, one of Sweeney’s next projects will also see her put in another performance where she has to run a physical and emotional gauntlet,...

Sydney Sweeney is getting in the ring.
The breakout from, well, basically everything she’s done lately is set to play boxer Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic directed by David Michôd (“Animal Kingdom”). Insert your own joke here about being a knockout. The script for the untitled project was written by Mirrah Foulkes and Michôd.
Martin was the most successful female boxer of the 1990s. She signed with Don King and is the only female boxer to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Martin became welterweight champion — but that was about the end of the good things in her life. Christy was physically abused by husband Jim Martin, who was eventually convicted of attempted second-degree murder with a firearm and sentenced to 25 years in prison. Christy Martin’s life is documented in “Untold,” the excellent series of documentaries by Chaplain and Maclain Way. Her episode is subtitled “Deal with the Devil,...

The film stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic with the ability to see into the future. She teams up with three future Spider-Women to hunt down your usual comic-book baddie.

Theaters are in a slump longer than they should be. The last five weekends averaged about $70 million total, while in 2019, the same five weekends with lower ticket prices averaged $190 million. That means success in VOD revenue is all that more important for studios. Even so, on the two top 10 lists from iTunes (ranking by transactions) and Fandango (by revenue), half the slots are taken by companies other than the usual top five.
Results overall reflect the cutback in releases due to last year’s strikes, some longer windows for bigger-grossing studio releases, and, in most cases, a weaker response to other films that made little theatrical impact. All that made it easy for “Dune: Part Two” (Warner Bros.), by far the year’s biggest hit, to repeat as #1 on both charts for the third week. And that’s with a higher price than usual.

Though the film was released several days ago, it can now boast of an impressive critical score.
If back in 2014 you were completely blown away (like lots of others) by John Green’s book adaptation of the same name The Fault in Our Stars starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort, you’ve probably just found your next must-watch.
Now based on the 2017 novel, Turtles All the Way Down has just arrived on Max, but yet managed to get the highest rating that John Green’s adaptations ever received.
Starring Isabela Merced famous for her roles in movies like Dora and the Lost City of Gold or Madame Web, Turtles All the Way Down follows 16-year-old Aza Holmes who is trying to live her life to the fullest while also struggling with obsessive-compulsive disorder (Ocd).

From being involved in major IPs, including Lord of the Rings, Planet of the Apes, the MCU, and Star Wars to helming on the director’s chair in three films, Andy Serkis has been a very busy man in Hollywood. Having marked his directorial debut with 2017’s Breathe, the acclaimed actor has gone on to direct two more features, one of them being 2021’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
But the Black Panther star refused to return for the Venom threequel in order to bring another one of his projects to life, which was on the sidelines for over a decade following his packed schedule.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Justice for Lori Petty!
One of cinema’s greatest action heroes is a fiercely feminist freedom fighter captured by an oppressive regime controlling the water supply of a post-apocalyptic landscape. Seeking revenge after her family was ripped from her, the heroine escapes the grasp of the army by stealing a vehicle of war, and ventures across the vast post-punk deserts of Australia with the ultimate goal of eventually slaying the white-haired tyrant who ruined her life.
No, I’m not talking about Furiosa, Charlize Theron’s iconic badass in “Mad Max: Fury Road.

Turtles All The Way Down, adapted from John Green’s best-selling novel, is finally coming to UK TV screens this month.
John Green’s book The Fault In Our Stars and its film adaptation was a huge teen phenomenon and, in all honesty, it broke my heart too at the ripe age of 23. Green’s other books, Paper Towns and Looking For Alaska have also since been adapted for screens big and small.
The latest adaptation is Turtles All The Way Down, which has just premiered on Max in the US. So far, there hasn’t been a UK release date for the film, but we’ve just received some good news in our inbox. The film, directed by Hannah Marks, will be released on Sky Cinema on the 26th May.

Madame Web arrived in theaters earlier this year and is seemingly destined to go down as one of the worst superhero movies ever made.
With 12% on Rotten Tomatoes, it earned only $100.3 million at the worldwide box office, making it a critical and commercial flop Sony won't easily recover from. Of course, it's too late now to change its 2024 slate as Venom: The Last Dance and Kraven the Hunter are fast approaching.
Box office numbers like the ones above confirm the vast majority of fans and regular moviegoers didn't bother seeing Madame Web on the big screen, but you'll soon be able to watch it at home... provided you have a Netflix subscription.

Sydney Sweeney is an up-and-coming young actor who has taken the world by storm because of her brilliant talent. The American actress has been acting from a young age and she has been around the industry for a long time. She has been doing small roles in many big movies but got her big break because of shows like Everything Sucks! and Sharp Objects, but her stardom reached a new level after her HBO series Euphoria came out.
Sweeney has also enjoyed a healthy film career and has her own production company, Fifty-Fifty Films which recently produced the psychological horror film Immaculate while she did technically appear in a Marvel film known as Madame Web, let’s ignore that film as best we can. If you never caught Madame Web in theaters (I certainly wouldn’t blame you) but still want to check out the box office and critical disaster, you might be interested to know that the film will be coming to Netflix on May 14th.
Madame Web was a bit of a disaster, which is a shame for any project that people worked hard on, but you’ve got to wonder what type of movie the creative team had originally envisioned. While there was potential there, the final result wasted every opportunity. You had Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, and Celeste O’Connor as three different Spider-Women… except we never really get to see this in action beyond a few glimpses into the future. Toss in some bewildering dialogue and subpar action, and you’re just left scratching your head.
Madame Web star Dakota Johnson later slammed the movie, saying she would never do anything like it again.

Toss in some bewildering dialogue and subpar action, and you’re just left scratching your head.
Madame Web star Dakota Johnson later slammed the movie, saying she would never do anything like it again.

Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans all star in Materialists, the next film from Oscar-nominated Past Lives director Celine Song. Filming’s now underway in New York.
Given writer-director Celine Song’s elegant 2023 romance Past Lives was nominated for two Oscars – including Best Picture – it’s little surprise that trendy production company A24 was keen to work with her again.
Song’s follow-up movie is somewhat different in tone from her debut, and much starrier: in here we have Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and the phenomenally busy Pedro Pascal. According to the Film & Television Industry Alliance’s production list, filming was due to start in New York on the 15th May; there are now reports, however, that the shoot has already begun.
World of Reel has spotted a couple tweets that appear to confirm this, with one even showing Dakota Johnson on location in Manhattan. Here’s one now:...

Madame Web has finally been released! Unfortunately, the speculation about Sony’s latest Spider-Man spin-off is correct as critics have trashed the feature. There’s even been some reviews that call Madame Web the worst superhero film ever made. It’s not particularly surprising that Madame Web turned out to be a bad film. Sony themselves have been strongly hinted that they had no faith in this film. Sony only released one trailer for the film. Most films in the mainstream have two or three trailers come out before release. The review embargo wasn’t lifted until the day before Madame Web came out. It’s

Sony pushes two of its upcoming releases back by several months, with Kraven The Hunter receiving its second substantial delay.
Sony has announced a couple of delays to two of its biggest upcoming titles.
Kraven The Hunter, the latest film in Sony’s series of Spider-Man spin-off films, has been pushed back by around four months, from August all the way back to December. This marks the second delay for the superhero movie which was originally supposed to release at the tail end of last year before being delayed until August. This second delay now means it has effectively been pushed back by a full year.
According to Deadline, the new release date means Kraven will be able to secure plenty of IMAX and other premium format screens. Whether that’s the reason for the delay, though, the story doesn’t mention.

The latest Spider-Man spin-off from Sony's Spider-Man Universe was hit with yet another release delay.
It's no secret that Sony Pictures has not had an easy run with its superhero universe, especially after 2024's Madame Web became a massive critical and financial flop (see the biggest criticisms about the film here).
Still, the studio has every intention of pushing this franchise forward with two other Spidey spin-offs still coming in 2024, hoping to stand strong against competition like Marvel Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine.

Sony’s Kraven the Hunter was supposed to be 2024’s second Spider-Man-adjacent film. However, the studio is trying to put as much space between it and Madam Web as possible. Kraven is just barely staying in the calendar year.
The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that the live-action adaptation of the comic book villain, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, has been moved from August 30 to December 13. The Karate Kid previously held this date. Sony has since moved that reboot to May 30, 2025.
Karven the Hunter isn’t being moved due to production delays; it has been ready to go for a while. The latest Spidey adversary flick was initially slated to debut last October. Sony decided against this since the actor’s strike would have left the movie without a cast to talk it up in the press.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has certainly seen better days. Just five years ago, each film was almost a guaranteed billion-dollar smash for Disney and Marvel Studios. Now, in an era where the entertainment industry has been oversaturated by steaming, people seem less and less interested in the franchise.
In the early days of Disney+, shows like Loki and The Falcon and The Winter Solder were must watch television. Now, shows like Secret Invasion, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law and Ms. Marvel are plummeting in viewership. Not to mention the recent box office failures of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels at the 2023 box office.
Not only has Marvel been losing it big in the once popular superhero genre, but Sony is also dropping with their Spider-Verse spin-off films like Morbius and Madame Web, and Warner Bros. Discovery with their DC Universe films like The Flash and Blue Beetle.

Sony’s Spider-Man Universe had a good idea at the start: bring together key characters from the Spiderverse. But they forgot something important: Spider-Man himself. Despite a few movies already, the universe hasn’t been received well, except for the ‘Venom’ series, which is ending this October.
The latest disappointment was ‘Madame Web.’ This December, we’re getting a movie about one of Spider-Man’s top villains, Kraven the Hunter. Let’s see what we know about it.
The movie will be rated “R”
We don’t have much info on the movie’s plot, but the villain was supposed to be in it earlier. Execs held off because his stories are pretty intense for older viewers. The movie will likely be rated “R,” but we’re still unsure which story it’ll use. In August 2018, Richard Wenk was hired to write the script, following his success with ‘The Equalizer 2.
