The film, starring an ensemble cast including Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, and Denzel Washington, among others, has been in development for years. There was a time when people used to say “In Bollywood, either sex sells or Shah Rukh Khan”. Here we are 20 years later and it still is true even today. Such is the box office pull King Khan has wielded over audiences since his return. Jawan is South Indian director Atlee’s fifth film and boy does he go all in for this one. It is as if someone told him this was his only shot at making a Bollywood film. He did not hold back as the film is technically brilliant in all aspects from direction to cinematography to the VFX to the production design etc. Atlee has taken his working formula from Tamil films and made an all out mass entertainer for the Bollywood audience.
The story is pretty straightforward and predictable. If you have seen all of Atlee’s previous films, you will realize very quickly that...

Revenge is a dish best served cold in "Man on Fire," Tony Scott's excellent, violent thriller from 2004. The film is currently streaming on Netflix overseas, where audiences are seemingly keen to tune into the adventures of Denzel Washington's John W. Creasy. Creasy, we learn, is a damaged, miserable, unshaven former CIA agent and mercenary turned bodyguard. If that sounds like a demotion, it is — Creasy has a drinking problem that's pretty much destroyed his career. Now he can only find work guarding other people. He's also perpetually miserable and grumpy, unwilling to get close to anyone for any reason. His only friend is an old friend played with weird gusto by Christopher Walken.
Walken's character helps Creasy land a new job. This latest gig takes Creasy to Mexico, where he's tasked with guarding Pita (Dakota Fanning), a young girl who is the daughter of a wealthy Mexican businessman...

At the turn of the millennium, Gladiator revived Ridley Scott_. But despite constant rumours, he’s never returned to the world of his greatest hit… until now.
Here’s what you need to know.
1) It’s a Ridley Scott joint
Scott might have ceded the director’s chair for Blade Runner 2049 to Denis Villeneuve, but rather than delegate the Gladiator sequel, he’s kept it for himself. Production is set to get underway when he finishes his quiet, intimate drama (read: massive battle-tastic historical epic) Napoleon, which is currently in post-production.
It’s funny to see him taking on back-to-back sword-swinging behemoths – back in the early 2000s, Scott nearly turned down the offer from super-producer Dino De Laurentiis to direct Hannibal, because he thought it was about the Carthaginian general and his elephants, and couldn’t face climbing another Gladiator-sized mountain straight away.Apparently he has even more energy today,...

Denzel Washington is in final negotiations to join Ridley Scott’s upcoming “Gladiator” sequel, reteaming after 2007’s “American Gangster.”
If the deal closes, the two-time Academy Award winner would join newly minted Oscar nominees Paul Mescal and Barry Keoghan, whose participation in the Paramount Pictures film broke Thursday.
Paramount has dated the film for November 22, 2024.
David Scarpa is penning the script for the sequel, which Scott will direct and produce with Michael Pruss via Scott Free, as well as Doug Wick and Lucy Fisher via Red Wagon Entertainment. Executive producers are Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald. Also returning from the original film are cinematographer John Mathieson, production designer Arthur Max and costume designer Janty Yates.
The sequel follows 2000’s blockbuster hit “Gladiator,” which was nominated for 12 Academy Awards and won five, including best picture. It earned $460 million at the box office. The film starred Russell Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius,...

It goes the same every year; the holidays are a time for joy and renewal, and the new year is a time to throw it all away, recover emotionally, and ignore real life until February (at least). We’re talking peak winter, existential angst — the kind of things you can’t face down without a warm blanket and a weekend TV marathon.

With its list of new releases for June 2022, HBO Max is joining in what should be a TV summer to remember.
Not content to let Netflix’s Stranger Things or Prime Video’s The Boys to dominate the summer TV landscape, HBO is coming through with a new season of one of its big hits. Westworld season 4 is set to premiere June 26 on both HBO and HBO Max. What will this season of the increasingly confusing sci-fi drama be about? Per HBO’s synopsis it will be “A dark odyssey about the fate of sentient life on earth.” So you know, only that.
Irma Vep is the only other Max Original of note this month. Based on a 1996 cult classic of the same name, this limited series stars Alicia Vikander as a disillusioned movie star looking to remake the early 20th century French silent film serial Les Vampires.

I figured I should probably watch 1986’s Top Gun before my press screening of its impending sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. Often it’s the case with classic films — I use the phrase loosely here — I’ve not seen that I’m embarrassed to admit that. I can’t say that’s true here, but I am mystified as to how I’ve managed to avoid this movie for almost 40 years. I’m not sure how I missed it when it was new. I mean! Summer of ’86, when this was released, I was 17 years old, and I was going to the movies a lot. It was the season of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, The Manhattan Project, Aliens, The Fly, and Stand by Me. All was geeky GenX glory. Maybe there were just too many movies. Strange to think that could be it, when there are so many more vying for our attention now.

Ramón Rodríguez has been cast in a lead role opposite Aubrey Plaza in the Hulu drama pilot “Olga Dies Dreaming,” Variety has learned.
The show is based on the yet-to-be-released novel of the same name by Xóchitl Gonzalez. It was ordered to pilot at the streamer back in April. It tells the story of a Nuyorican brother(Rodríguez) and sister (Plaza) from a gentrifying Sunset Park, Brooklyn, reckoning with the absent, politically radical mother and their glittering careers among New York City’s elite in the wake of Hurricane Maria.
Rodríguez’s character is named Prieto. He is Olga’s brother and a popular Congressman who is described as wearing his Puerto Rican pride like a badge of honor. Tony Scott was no stranger to remakes, having provided his take on 1974 classic The Taking of Pelham 123, and even considered updates on The Warriors and The Wild Bunch before he sadly took his own life in 2012. Six months after the unexpected death of Chadwick Boseman, the “Black Panther” actor has won multiple critics awards, a Golden Globe nomination and emerged as a shoo-in for an Oscar nomination for his great final performance as a sly, cocky trumpeter in “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Audiences have been able to watch the film, co-starring Viola Davis in a ferocious performance as the title character, now available to stream on Netflix.

George C. Wolfe’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” features the final performance of “Black Panther” star Chadwick Boseman, who died Aug. 28. In the film, coming to Netflix on Dec. 18, he plays an ambitious jazz trumpeter, Levee, butting heads with Viola Davis’ titular blues singer in 1920s Chicago. Asked about his favorite shot from the film during EnergaCamerimage Film Festival’s online seminar, the film’s Dp Tobias Schliessler chose one featuring Boseman.
“One of the moments I will never forget was when Chadwick had this incredible emotional scene, talking about his mother getting raped,” he said. “I was looking at the monitors and I wanted to get just a little bit more light in his eyes, to show all the emotions. My operator was tightening in on him and everything just fell into place. It was an incredible experience, watching this actor.”

Denzel Washington has remained one of the biggest stars in Hollywood for decades now, and is one of very few actors or actresses that are capable of driving a movie to success based on the strength of their personal brand alone. The 65 year-old has a track record of hits that would make any of his peers envious, and when you see his name above the title, you know that a solid performance is guaranteed regardless of the genre.
The two-time Academy Award winner tends to jump between the action-driven thrillers that built his reputation as a draw and the smaller-scale independent dramas that give him the chance to stretch his dramatic muscles, but very rarely do you see Denzel Washington attached to either a bad movie or a bomb. Nearly everything he makes is enjoyable and he elevates every film that he’s in.

With each month that passes, Netflix subscribers brace for a new wave of content – movies, TV shows, binge-worthy Netflix Originals… that kind of thing.
But in order to make way for that fresh deluge of entertainment, the streaming service sheds a number of titles, and February 2020 is no different. So as subscribers prepare themselves for Altered Carbon season 2 and Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back—Evolution, they must also bid farewell to the likes of District 9, Gangs of New York and The Matrix Trilogy. Though surely the first Matrix film is the only one worthy of a goodbye. The sequels? Not so much.
Horror fans will be forced to bid adieu to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, too, while much of the Jeopardy! series will be leaving the Netflix service on February 27th. It’s part and parcel of the company’s ‘revolving door’ approach to content; as new material is added...

Ryan Reynolds’ tech billionaire puts his money where his mouth is in Michael Bay’s problematic 6 Underground.

With a title like 6 Underground, Michael Bay’s new action flick sounds like it could be a distant sequel to The Taking of Pelham 123, or at least in conversation with fellow 2019 release 21 Bridges. But this Frankenstein’s Monster of genre clichés—the revenge thriller, the one last heist, and the first mission with the boss—has absolutely nothing to do with public transportation, and in fact has absolutely of value at all to its name, despite being set in a world of extreme wealth.
Yes, Ryan Reynolds plays tech billionaire, but one who is strangely not a household name yet—we don’t even know his name despite spending two hours with him, nor does his team-turned-family of varied assassins, thieves, doctors, soldiers, and so forth.

Netflix has confirmed that 40 new original series, movies and specials will be debuting on the streaming service in September. There must be thousands of old TV movies that would reward viewing if they were being screened anywhere... although the odds of finding anything good at random are even more slight than when you go trawling through old cinema releases without a guide. The much-discredited auteur theory can come to the rescue: a show with a director known for other interesting work has a far higher chance of rewarding attention.TV was Joseph Sargent's bread and butter, from relatively highbrow stuff to The Man from Uncle, but he also made several decent cinema films, including at least one masterpiece, The Taking of Pelham 123. When I found a DVD entitled Hiroshima with his name spelled incorrectly on the back, I decided to take a chance on it, and indeed the film, originally it seems a mini-series from 1989 called Day One, has a lot going for it. What immediately cheered me,...

Ramon Rodriguez has joined the NBC legal drama pilot “Prism” in a lead role, Variety has learned.
“Prism” is an exploration of a murder trial in which every episode is told through the perspective of a different key person involved. Each new version of the facts ratchets up the mystery and the suspense, calling into question everything we have seen so far and asking if the right person is on trial. Driven by an ensemble of complicated characters, the show lets the audience ask if truth matters less than who can tell the most compelling story.
Rodriguez will play Eduardo Guaty, described as a hard-hitting prosecutor. He joins previously announced cast members Malin Akerman and Mykelti Williamson.
Rodriguez recently appeared in Season 4 the critically-acclaimed Showtime series “The Affair” and will appear in the show’s upcoming fifth and final season. He also played the villain Bakuto in the Marvel-...

There was certainly a buzz in the air at this week’s Mipcom. The market felt genuinely busy and a raft of A-list talent such as Ben Stiller, Issa Rae and Jenna Coleman gave it a spark of glamor. Some 13,800 delegates, including 4,800 buyers from 110 countries attended the international television market, which was dominated by chatter about the growth of digital buyers and the “never-ending” drama boom as well as concerns over what media consolidation means for the global market (as well as traditional complaints about the rain and the airport-style security).
Endeavor boss Ari Emanuel talked up his plans to acquire more content companies, Insecure star Rae discussed the importance of diverse storytellers, while joking that even “white people are tired of seeing white-people shows” and Facebook made a splash with the news that it was rebooting The Real World online.

Contemporary Chinese Cinema is a column devoted to exploring contemporary Chinese-language cinema primarily as it is revealed to us at North American multiplexes.Over the last few years it has become increasingly easy to see mainstream Asian films in North America at the same time they are released in their home countries. Thanks to partnerships with small, international distributors, the major multiplex chains (AMC, Cinemark, Regal) have devoted a handful of screens in major markets to showing new releases from India, Korea, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Most of these titles fall under the radar of both critics and audiences outside the diasporic communities to which they are targeted. They play for a week or two and then disappear, outside of a handful of breakout titles. Last year Stephen Chow’s The Mermaid made headlines for its high per-screen averages in North America as it shattered domestic box office records in China.

While the main series is reaching its final act it appears HBO is not yet ready to leave Westeros alone as four spin offs are planned for 'Game of Thrones.'
While its unclear at this stage what period or characters the spin offs will deal it, HBO have created four teams of writers to maximise potential, the teams are:
Max Borenstein
His credits include writing the screenplay for Kong: Skull Island and 2014's Godzilla. On the TV side, he was the showrunner and creator of Fox's short-lived Minority Report reboot, which marks his lone small-screen credit. Borenstein next is readying Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and Godzilla vs. Kong (2020).
Jane Goldman
Goldman's credits include writing the screenplay for Neil Gaiman's Stardust as well as adapting comic favorite Kick-Ass. Her geek cred includes X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kingsman: The Golden Circle.

That HBO is working on a “Game of Thrones” spin-off is no surprise. That they’re working on four separate spin-offs in order to find the right fit to follow up the Emmy-winning original, well, that’s a little surprising. But there’s no surprise when it comes to choosing the best option.
On paper, the choice is clear. The premium cable giant is waiting to read all the scripts before making a decision on which to pursue, but let’s see if you can figure it out based solely on who’s writing the four contenders. Your multiple choice quiz begins…now!

John Travolta has had a bit of a rough decade. In the past ten years, he starred in Wild Hogs, Old Dogs, From Paris With Love (which was one of the worst action movies of the past two decades), and the forgettable remake The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3. But Quentin Tarantino resurrected his career once before by giving him a lead role in Pulp Fiction, and it seems Travolta is looking to get back on top yet again. The Wrap reports that he's in talks to join I Am Wrath, an action film previously set to star his Face/Off co-star Nicolas Cage.
I Am Wrath follows "a man out for vigilante justice after a group of corrupt cops are unable to catch his wife’s killer." That's about as generic as it gets, so it's tough for me to really get excited about this. It seems like...

Thank you very much Mr. Traincrash.
You don't see a lot of decent movies anymore. You see mediocrities all the time, movies that never get too good, but often stray into the below-average, but these decent movies that stay just above average but thoroughly entertain are a rare breed. Last Passenger (2014) does this quite convincingly on a budget of around £1.5 million. Tony Scott's The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 (2009), another train-based film, cost about $100 million and provided roughly the same amount of gripe-free viewing. Economic though it may be, Last Passenger isn't breaking new ground in any other arena. The framework is incredibly familiar in both plot and character dynamic. This is a disaster genre movie through and through. But it's reliable. About as unaccountably reliable as those brake pads. How could they possibly have still worked?

After receiving joking acknowledgment in The Wolf of Wall Street last year, awareness of ‘80s TV series The Equalizer is probably now as high as it was ever going to be. It’s hard to imagine any fans of the series clamouring for a film version more than two decades later, and even harder to say whether they’ll approve of Antoine Fuqua’s adaptation, which carries over the names of the series, but little else. A one-man A-Team,the titular Equalizer is Robert McCall, an ex-covert operative with a particular set of skills he uses to atone for a shady past, one hard-luck case at a time.
The original series was set in New York, while the film version has driven a few hours up the I-90 to move the surroundings to Boston. While the change of leading man, from proper Brit Edward Woodward to all-American-ly handsome Denzel Washington,...

He’s Denzel Washington, a two time Academy Award winning thespian and giant in the industry. Washington does more than just act of course, he’s an iconic movie star, there’s no doubt about that. If anyone is right for this sort of a spotlight, it’s him. Washington got his start in TV movies, but on the big screen he made his first mark with Cry Freedom, which also got him nominated for Best Supporting Actor, his first nomination of what would become a half dozen (and counting). That established him as an up and comer, leading to his television role on the show St. Elsewhere, which ran for half a decade. That would open up some major film roles, including Glory, where he received...

John Travolta is as fascinating and complex a member of the Hollywood fraternity as you could wish for. Iconic performer, experienced pilot, vocal Scientologist and mangler of pronunciation of Idina Menzel.
He has managed to appear in not just some of the best known, but also some of the best-full-stop films of the past forty years – Saturday Night Fever, Carrie, Grease, Pulp Fiction, Get Shorty, Face/Off, The Thin Red Line, Hairspray and the upcoming Gummy Bear The Movie – whatever one might think of the consistency of his output (and there have been some horrendous misfires), it is hard to imagine too many actors playing Danny Zuko, Vincent Vega, Castor Troy, Sean Archer, Chili Palmer and Edna Turnblad with equal conviction.
After the temporary resuscitation of Look Who’s Talking turned out to be a false dawn, Tarantino did Travolta a favour of inestimable proportions by casting him in Pulp Fiction,...

Mark Hartley is an Australian filmmaker best known for the hugely entertaining look at the raucous and imaginative 70s and 80s new wave of cinema from his home country in documentary Not Quite Hollywood: The Wild, Untold Story of Ozploitation!
He’s remade one of those films from that era (the 1978 psychokinetic –tinged horror film Patrick) and we recently spoke to the director about his past work and the decision to use this project as a springboard for launching his narrative career.
HeyUGuys: Patrick is a little reminiscent of the new version of Maniac in the respect that it doesn’t feel like an out-and-out remake.
Mark Hartley: It’s kinda interesting with remakes. We wanted to be respectful [to the previous film] but obviously we didn’t want to make the same film again and we never felt like we were remaking someone’s film during the shoot. Hopefully that comes across in the execution.

See Channing Tatum go rogue this Saturday on Reelz
It's exciting to watch TV shows and movies where the police officers doggedly pursue every lead and put together a by-the-book, airtight case to bring the bad guys to justice. But, it's often far more thrilling to watch the exploits of cops who toss the book out the window and go rogue in pursuit of justice. Sometimes cops go rogue because they work in a corrupt department, but usually they're just guys who know that they can't get the job done by playing by the rules.
What we want to know is which movie has the best rogue cop. Turn on your police scanner, grab a donut and help us choose the movie cops who make going rogue look good. For more rogue-cop action, be sure to watch Son of No One starring Channing Tatum Saturday on Reelz at 8p Et/ 5p Pt.

It’s rare that a film is unanimously considered one of the worst of all time, but almost every bottom ten list manages to find room for the fourth entry in the Jaws franchise. Be it the ambiguous nature of the title (who, exactly, is taking revenge?), the wooden performances or the rubber monster haunting the cast on two different coasts, very little of Jaws: The Revenge isn’t awful or incomprehensible. So often mentioned as a trainwreck of a film, it barely seems worth discussing, let alone focusing a whole piece about.
But here we go for the, thankfully, final bout with the legendary monster. Jeannot Swarc, director of Jaws 2, said that the title of his film in his homeland of France translated to “shit.” If only language translation worked the way it should, the French would have reserved that literal translation for two films later.
The plot,...
