I'm a fish out of water, get me out of here.
Sleepin_Dragon13 February 2020
Neville gets roped in to investigate the death of a Survival instructor in the middle of a course.

Another very good episode, the slightly more serious tone continues, but once again I can't really pick any fault with anything, a really good story, well paced, a good set of characters, and the usual mix of drama and humour, although the scales have flipped more so in favour of drama, it's very different to the early years. The solution does seem to come out of nowhere, if you worked this out you should be in MI5.

I am really liking Neville, he's the closest we've had to the original, Richard Poole, Neville is a fish out of water, and struggling to adapt to life in The Carribbean. He was a little calmer than in his first episode, but I find his quirks very appealing. I genuinely think he's perfect for the part.

Very good indeed. 8/10

Episode 9.6

I do like it when you sometimes have bad weather in a tropical island. Periods of heavy rains are the reason why these islands are so green.

Neville Parker is not part of the team yet, he is still recovering from his ailments. However when a murder takes place in one of the smaller islands. DS Dumas wants Parker involved because of his seniority.

The victim was a survival instructor who was running one of his courses. All the possible suspects have an alibi, the victim was found dead about half a mile way in this small island.

The police find out that the survival instructor had a murky past in the army which led to the death of one soldier. Pretty soon the suspects mount up but Parker needs to figure out the how and why.

We have an abrasive relationship between Commissioner Patterson and Parker. At the moment Patterson is happy to see the back of him and remained unimpressed when Parker did his Sherlock Holmes trick regarding the Commissioner's new boat.

It was impressive how Parker managed to figure everything out. There is certainly some bit of Columbo about him. I did think a previous Death in Paradise episode had elements of something similar being done.

DI Neville had to Go!!!
vintagegeek10 May 2020
This new DI is a joke. His ridiculous medical issues, mosquito issues, etc are a major distraction. Looks like they were thinking his idiosyncrasies were cute. Dump he fast. And he wears a jacket and tie in the Caribbean.

A quite good episode!

Warning: Spoilers
The ninth season has been a really good one so far with not a single bad or even decent episode. "Murder on Mosquito Island" continues the season with an entry, which is not great, but extremly watchable.

Let's start with the good aspects, shall we?

. The episode looks and sounds wonderful, the production values of the show have never let me down. The acting's good too. Alexandra Roach and especially Sam Throughton do particularly well with their roles. Ralf Little also continues to be likable as Neville Parker and I liked that he does not moan about his allergies as much as he did in the previous episode.

. The murder mystery is very intriguing indeed with welcome humor and solid twists. Really liked the subplot regarding JP and Rosey.

But...

. There are times, when the script is not always neat and does get a bit too predictable for its own good. For example: if characters mention they have a place to go to before going on a deserted island, the audience get a pretty good idea what's going to happen soon, right?

. The solution to the mystery is however the biggest problem. It, agreed, feels to have come out of nowhere. Malcolm turning out to be the killer was not a bad idea, but the motive why he did it really came out of the blue. There certainly were clues that Neville knew, but the audience did not, which was not fair.

Overall, still a good one.

Yes Neville mosquitoes, what else would you expect on a tropical island?

Police Commissioner Selwyn Paterson was informed that DI Neville Parker, was "Brilliant if a little annoying" by his superior Officer.

He also assured him that, "I am looking forward to seeing the Brilliant".

DI Parker is indeed a diligent and thorough investigator to the nth degree, so much so that some may regard him as rather pernickety in his approach.

I imagine that in the normal run of things in his life he wouldn't take anything for chance, rather looking into all eventualities before making a move.

Which is why I can't imagine anyone like this not thinking ahead and researching Saint Marie, before he even set foot on the plane from Manchester.

He would most surely have the very strongest sun barrier cream to hand, and have covered himself in copious quantities of it beforehand.

He would ensure that he had every single allergy covered with multitudinous backup, on hand to try and cover every conceivable eventuality.

But even his forethought didn't allow for what eventually poleaxed him Deep Vein Thrombosis, preventing him from being able to fly again for several weeks.

The Police Commissioner Selwyn Patterson ever solicitous of his welfare ensured that he, was moved post haste from his luxurious hotel surroundings. Back into his official police accommodation, his way of welcoming DI Neville Parker to the Paradise Island of Saint Marie.

Just rewatching this Episode I have forgotten the beginning and am frankly surprised by what occurred next.

Having discovered the body DS Madeleine Dumas and Police Commissioner Selwyn Patterson, arrived at DI Neville Parker official residence.

Apparently they need a senior officer to investigate a murder, and they want to see if he can lend a hand.

With the Commissioner not really wanting "to ask this particular officer", what the heck?

Parker has been apparently at home for a week after he collapsed, presumably laid off recuperating.

But like it or not he is the DI who has got the job so they all have to do is, simply get over any gripes and get on with the job in hand.

That is after all what they are employed and paid to do instead of Parker, whinging about sand and mosquitoes.

Or the Commissioner wanting to, if its slipping Neville a Mickey Finn well he could surely get away with that.

Seriously?

Warning: Spoilers
I completely agree with the reviewer who said that the resolution of this episode is ridiculous. The idea that the victim would suddenly decide to turn a treatable wound into his own redemption-by-suicide and also try to protect his assailant by leaving misdirecting clues may not be entirely out of the realm of possibility, but it certainly stretches credibility to the breaking point. But what really wrecks it is the fact that NO evidence exists to prove that any of what DI Parker conjectures actually took place! It's pretty much all in Parker's head, courtesy of his dubious posthumous psychological analysis of the victim. Yet, when confronted, the murderer - if you can even call the person that, since according to Parker's theory it was ultimately the victim's own actions that did him in - immediately admits to being guilty. Ugh. Give me a break.

I've enjoyed all the displaced-from-Britain DI's on this show so far: Ben Miller's Richard Poole, Kris Marshall's Humphrey Goodman, and Ardal O'Hanlon's Jack Mooney - they've all been distinct, interesting and engaging characters, with the refreshingly non-neurotic Mooney being my favorite. I was completely invested in each of them on their arrivals, but I can't say I'm feeling the same about Ralf Little's Neville Parker. Little is a good actor (and nice to look at, to boot), but right now Neville seems too much like a recycled DI Poole for my taste, with his climate-challenged idiosyncrasies and his anxiousness to get off Sainte Marie. He's at least more cheerful than Poole, and hopefully the writers will give the character more of his own path. In the meantime, could somebody just get the guy a can of anti-bug spray already? His allergies and medical issues are as much torture for the viewers as they are for him.

I've been a big fan of DIP from the beginning, but I do feel like the formula is beginning to get a little stale. Some of the plots feel like retreads of earlier episodes, and the "tradition" of gathering all the suspects together at the end, Agatha Christie-style, seems mostly unnecessary. I do still enjoy the supporting regulars, but J. P.'s story line is now starting to feel too similar to Fidel's way back when. I'm warming up to Madeleine, but I hope they will start letting her do more than just stand around and react. I may be in a minority but I have liked Ruby since she first showed up - her character is a unique addition and I think Shyko Amos does a great job in the role. The Commissioner and Catherine are delightful as always, and I wouldn't mind seeing a little more of them. I'll keep watching, but I hope the show is not on a downward trajectory.

Murder on Mosquito Island
studioAT7 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Is this show starting to repeat itself? The actual mystery here feels similar to another, as does JP's predicament - didn't Fidel way back in S2 go through a similar one? Even Neville feels a bit too Richard Poole-esque for his own good.

I'm not warming to Ralph Little as the lead. They need to tone down his little 'quirks' which mean he veers from being a prat one minute and genius the next.

He's not helped by the fact that nearly a whole series later they've still done nothing to flesh out the character of Madeline. I feel sorry for the actress because other than a vague hint of an ex back in S8 there's been no development, she remains paper thin as a character. With it now being announced that the lovely Florence is returning in S10, Madeline it seems will remain a mystery.

Not a great episode, despite Alexandra Roach popping up as one of the suspects.

Deja vu all over again
mizpete29 November 2020
I remember this from a previous season, only the DI and police officers are different. Still like the show but, good grief, surely they could write more original scripts. Love Ruby, Madame Mayor, and JP, but they should give Madeleine more to do.

The ending left much to be questioned
safenoe12 October 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Neville is less itchy and scratchy this time round thankfully. Still, when Commissioner Patterson had a heart-to-heart talk with Neville about his idiosyncrasies and his future on the island, you could sense it was the producers wondering the same. Was there a massive creative blunder in portraying Neville as the itchy and scratchy type? We know Neville is back for season 10. Sadly we can't say the same for Aude Legastelois, who replaced Josephine Jobert at the end of season 10. Jobert returns in season 10, and I assume this means Aude hasn't been asked back. Awkward.

The "solution" to the crime had way too much conjecture. Way too much. I'm surprised this part of the script got through the editing process.

Convoluted story ***spoiler alert***
yes-6614015 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I love the show and enjoy the new Chief Inspector but the story line for this one was ridiculous. The victim was stabbed and instead of trying to save his own life, he proceeded to help the murderer get away with it by creating a murder scene pointing to intruders from a boat...according to the Inspector he did this because he suddenly felt guilty about being an a-hole to the person who stabbed him (actually lanced him with a spear). Such a stupid plot. Really hated this episode.

Loved this show from day 1. New DI ruins it
mdking-3866930 November 2020
I have enjoyed every new detective this show has thrown at us, except Neville Parker. He's just plain pathetic and annoying with no redeeming qualities. The only way a character that is this annoying can be acceptible is if they are so overwhelmingly brilliant that it can be excused (I.e. Sherlock). He's not. He's both annoying and mediocre. He needs to go.

The ONE thing this show has that keeps it going season after season is the joy of the island life and that laid back feel. Neville Parker changes the whole tone of the show without any other powerful character to keep it loose and fun and it makes me want a can of bug spray rather than a rum punch.

Neville has GOT to go.
krisroberson-028357 September 2020
We are now 2 episodes in to this character and he's done nothing to redeem himself.

I've seen other reviews that reference S1 and Richard Poole. That comparison does not do justice to Mr. Miller's performance in that role.

Poole was a loner fish out of water who did his very best in the situation. We came to appreciate his hard-working character and we were sorry to seem him go.

Neville (Ralf Little) is nothing short or a whining. Sniveling, self-centered, childish irritant. There nothing special about his detection skills. His continuous, one-foot-out-the-door detracts from any minutely endearing quality the producers may have thought would be present.

The progression has been the subtle humor of Poole, the charming clumsiness of Goodman, the goofy and light-hearted outlook of Mooney...and the jarring, grating selfishness of Parker.

If this character continues, I may not be watching many more episodes.

DI Neville Parker Needs To Be Sent Packing!
nocarme-75-40284023 November 2020
I have watched three episodes from season 9 and I am not sure I want to continue. DI Neville Parker Is SO VERY annoying with his hypochondria. Enough already! I just want to slap him silly. Either he goes or I go and I'm afraid it is going to be me if the writing on the show does not improve. This used to be my favorite show. Not anymore.

How much more of Neville will be have to take?
larrydearing16 August 2022
Again I give an episode a rating of 4 because of an interesting, although implausable, story line. It's totally unbelievable and solved by pulling a rabbit out of a hat, but it was - - - - interesting - something that Neville is not. I still watch it because I was fully into the first 8 1/2 seasons, but now I'm just waiting for Neville to leave Saint Marie. I like the other characters, espcially Camille, Fidel, and Dwayne, - - - oh, wait!

I don't understand why the producers insist on trying to make this a *comedy*/drama. Ben Miller was perfect in portraying a believable detective who could also be humorous. When they brought Chris Marshall on. They tried too hard to make him "cute" and ended up making him ridiculous and unbelievable as an adult who was an experienced detective. The directors insist on old-school, slap-stick comedy while the writers insist on nonsense conclusions that lead to unrealistically solved murders. I watch for the scenery and the opportunity to nip-pick for errors.
