Such a surprise... but this time, a good one!

WOW! This episode brings back memories of the fisrt twd season. They brought back the horror and I'm with my arms wide open for it! It also has some kind of comedy, and it fits perfect in the commonwealth storyline! I'm not the biggest fan of cliffhangers but the one in this episode was well constructed and left me excited for episode 2. A solid 10/1p. Elite The Walking Dead is back yall!

Incredibly strong episode. Best opener since season 5.
tobyford-7680819 August 2021
Both plotlines, both in alexandria and the commonwealth were great. The cinematography is, like with 10c, really carrying the tone, which is much more dark and gritty like the old days. Some great dialogue in here too.

I do personally feel as if the separation of the commonwealth and alexandria plots was somewhat damaging to my immersion as every time I was starting to really get into the scene it would change.

Regardless, it was a really good episode and gives me high expectations for season 11.

Great start, it would have been perfect if the Commonwealth part hadn't been rushed

Warning: Spoilers
The first scene was amazing, intense and beautifully shot, I almost didn't realize that there was 0 dialogue between the characters.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan were great on this episode and the dialogue between them was very well written something that hasn't always been present on the show.

For the Commonwealth part, it felt out of place in the episode, it was good, the acting and the dialogue was on point, just one thing ruined the episode, the jump between the scene where Princess tells the group that she realize that the two guards are hooking up in secret and the group almost escaping from the Commonwealth. How did they get out of the cell, stole the guards armors and managed to get away? There were some glimpses of Fear The Walking Dead writing on that scenes and had that scene been longer and contained the parts that showed how did they do it, the episode would have been a 10 for me.

Solid 9 anyway.

This episode was so dark and creepy. Reminds me of the amazing OG season 5 days.

They are also now utilising Yumiko as a character which is great now - Giving her some depth with the Wall of the Lost.

Great season ahead of us
omarmimaboody17 August 2021
This season has 2 arcs with 24 episodes so we are expecting more action and great scenes not like negan arc and whisperer wich both had 32 episodes so they had many boring scenes but I'm hopeful with this season.

The start was not really bad. It got better and better as time went on. Especially the last minutes of this episode were very exciting and heartwarming. A good start to a great ending.

A solid start to the final season
thesunshinestte17 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A classic season opener from Angela Kang; lays the foundation for how the season develops, subtle hints for future storylines plus some cool sequences with "team family".

The dark and slightly frightening tone feels different and fresh, especially liked the shifts between Acheron and the Commonwealth. I already feel that I dislike how the Commonwealth behaves as a society, and I suspect that they will be shown as a greater threat in the TV version versus the comic book version.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan steals every single scene in the role of Negan, I always feel that something is at stake when he's in focus. The fact that Maggie is back makes it all the more interesting, in one moment I'm Team Negan, while in the other I'm wondering why I even let me think I was.

I would still like to agree with some critics of this episode, it could easily aired as a double premiere, and I felt that it was cut a little too abruptly. I really also expected that at least one person would not make it out alive from the military base, but I choose to believe that a lot of stuff is going to happen in part number two. All in all, a very solid premiere. This season looks promising. (8.6/10).

TWD: Often interesting, Never Not Stupid
sogoodlooking4 March 2022
It's so TWD to leave a guy to die because there are a dozen walkers behind him in an adjacent subway car who can only come after you one at a time if you open the door to get the guy out. It's likely that two healthy people, perhaps even one with a knife could take them , but the group leaves their compatriot to die because !!drama!!

Even worse? They may have to go through that car anyway.

Later, of course, the dead are apparently able to walk through each other. What else could explain their newfound ability to attack in single file even after the first ten in line are extinguished?

The writers did the same thing at the beginning of the episode, flunking logistics as usual. By going cheap with extras at the military base, who could have been digitized at the back of the crowd in the dark, the walkers never presented an overwhelming threat and the urgency that could have been powerful never amounted to much. There were also alternative avenues down which to flee, even doors that could be closed and barricaded, undermining any sense of danger. It's a pity the head writer simply doesn't have the brains to establish useful parameters to these scenes.

In the subway Maggie gets a long, fairly well-written scene, but then the idiot character of Negan is given the closing sentences, and he finishes off her speech with gibberish.

TWD: Never Not Stupid.

This episode was incredibly good ! I liked it very much, it's darker and more action packed.

This reminds me of how te walking dead was in his early years!

The beginning is the end ! And the end is almost there...

A decent start.

Warning: Spoilers
This was nowhere near of a 10 out of 10 like so many reviewer make it out to be, but it was a good start for nowadays walking dead standards.

The Eugene plot line remains quite uninteresting, the first few minutes of the episode where they tried to build an intense atmosphere with complete silence didn't do it for me. But the train station sections and the drama between Negan and the group was cool.

Maggie is obviously not dead. It's these moments where you really feel like Walking Dead has lost most of it's tension. That is just my opinion but I didn't feel any danger whether it was with the scene in the first few minutes or the one in the last few minutes.

All in all a good episode but nothing too crazy. Still excited for this final season. Don't fk it up please!

Ran out of ideas. Not very good.
muvax10022 February 2022
The intro was very lame, introducing sleeping zombies this late is just not good storytelling. The characters and the dialogue is not compelling, the writing is boring and soul less as usual.

Perfect first episode of the last season. There's a lot to happen this season. I hope to see some characters return. Negan is a real badass and maggie is strong. It's gonna be intense.

A great start

Warning: Spoilers
A series opener which established the characters for the final series, great to see the commonwealth and Alexandria in ruin after the whisperer war. Would have been better if they'd been a couple of extra scenes such as eugene and co stealing the amour and Maggie agreeing to take negan on the supply run. Other than that the episode did a good job of continuing the story and returning to the walking dead's old ways of having the walkers as the main antagonist.

Angela Kang smashing it again!
lowkea18 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Straight off the bat the camera work and the fighting scenes have levelled up again. The scene with the women fighting the walkers was so good.

After 10 seasons of this show I can't believe how they still manage to keep up the suspense and the hype to find out what will happen next. The introduction of the commonwealth was perfect, gives you just enough to start to make your own assumptions but still leaves you asking questions, which is what makes this show so great.

Also here for the Maggie and Negan dynamic, I just hope it doesn't end up with negan sacrificing himself for the group to "prove his worth"/redeem himself because Negan is arguably the best character.

Buzzing for episode 2, great start to the season so far!

Fantastic Premiere
tristan_1917 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Acheron: Part I is a very engaging episode. It keeps the viewer entertained all the way through. We get to experience eerie cinematography, awesome music, tense moments, and even a good bit of fun during the Commonwealth storyline. The story makes sense and progresses naturally. Maggie came back, and while the food situation at Alexandria deteriorates, the group must find a solution quickly. Of course, bring Negan, and the tension rises automatically. The face off between Maggie and Negan in this episode, and the sharp dialogue is everything we could have hoped for. The acting is great, and the emotions portrayed wonderfully. Speaking of... What an emotional moment with Yumiko, who gets the Wall of the Lost storyline. Subtle acting, but damn good.

The subway is certainly a cool new location. The scenes are really well thought out by the director, who does a great job here. From the establishing of creepy ambiance or atmosphere in a scene, to the use of split screens, Dowling rocks. As for our characters, Daryl is kinda stuck in the middle of the Maggie - Negan situation, and he tries his best to keep his calm and protect Maggie, while knowing Negan isn't wrong most of the time. The dynamic is interesting. And the cliffhanger is actually perfect, and ends on a damn good high, keeping the viewer excited for the following week. Bring on the next part !

Fair opener

Warning: Spoilers
There were a lot of weird plot inconsistencies in this episode which can be boiled down to Maggie's incompetence... I didn't like Negan heavy-handing her at the end of the episode, but she obviously drug Negan along to either kill him or get him killed. Her story started to unravel when Negan questioned her about the bodies in the subway tunnel... for what reason we don't know, but it's clear she lied to everyone. And then the other guys who were previously working for the enemies just suddenly disappear with all of their stuff... yea, it was a great idea to have them carrying it, Maggie.

The real question is: why are we here? We moved past the 'I'm gonna kill you' tension between her and Negan what, 4 seasons ago? She had the chance to kill him, she didn't do it. It's been around 10 years since Glenn died - bit late to be getting cold feet about that whole execution thing - and, now because the episode needs it to happen, everyone who was previously neutral or friendly to Negan starts to 'other' him wOw sO sUrPrIsInG. These forced narrative shifts reeks of poor and inconsistent character writing.

Maggie's character seems to have been rewritten this season into something she never was before: annoying and incompetent. We'll see where it goes from here, I guess.

Overall, an ok episode. Not as good as the Gabriel or Negan episode of last season(gems of season 10), but not as bad as the Carol/Daryl episode either.

Fantastic start, back to the horror story.
Scott69924 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The episode starts with suspense, keeps it creepy. They keep this feeling throughout the episode. For me the commonwealth is still a mystery, are they bad, or cautious? The Negan/Maggie drama begins to escalate, I really thought Negan was going to do the hero thing at the end, but as it turns out the only person he is interested in helping is Negan, it's going to be interesting seeing that play out. When I saw the "Anti-racist " sign in the subway and Ezekiel asked the commonwealth orange guard what he did before, was he a "power-trippin cop", I had a sinking feeling, please don't go political on this show. Please. If I want that, I'll watch Station 19 with my wife instead of going in my cave and playing video games.

Better than 10x01

Warning: Spoilers
Positive : The commonwealth's arc is really interesting. I love princess and Mercer looks really good.

The subway's ambiance is well done, it's really dark and original in the TWD universe. There are many walkers, it has some budget. The end makes me want to see the part 2.

Negative : The commonwealth's part ends so easily. Princess seeing the tiny little paper on the big pannel... The beginning of the episode is stupid. Walkers sleeping, ok we already saw that with hershel in season 3 BUT how did they not smell them ? Why the group didn't used walkers's blood to make it much easier ?

I don't like Maggie, she dares to Negan to angry her more when all the episode she's insulting him. I just want to see Maggie's group dying fast, they are not interesting, they have all 12 years old to push Negan on the shoulder... It's not stressful in the subway because i don't care about maggie's group, alden... Daryl is.against Negan when in season 10, Negan gained his trust.

Well, ok-good episode, i hope the part 2 is better and this episode is still better than the season 10 premiere.

So they have a very dangerous new enemy, and decide to leave behind a god damn arsenal to supply an army because of a couple dozen contained walkers that can pick of a distance. Who writes this crap really.

Spoiler if you expect rational decisions from seasoned characters...
