Perhaps the most surprising, and unfamiliar, name at this year’s Academy Awards is that of Room director, Lenny Abrahamson. The Irish filmmaker is far from a household name, with only a handful of credits and his biggest film to date being 2014’s quirky SXSW favorite, Frank.
That is on the brink of changing, however, with Abrahamson earning his first Oscar nomination for this year’s Room, which tells the story of a young mother (best actress nominee Brie Larson) forced to raise her five-year-old son in the confines of a single room. As if an Oscar nom wasn’t enough, Abrahamson’s next slated project will team him with breakout star, and fellow Irishman, Domnhall Gleeson, on a script written by best picture-nominated The Danish Girl screenwriter Lucinda Coxon.

Joan Allen, William H Macy and Jacob Tremblay have been added to the cast of Room, Element Pictures and No Trace Camping’s adaptation of Emma Donoghue’s 2010 bestseller that Lenny Abrahamson is directing. Brie Larson stars in the pic, for which A24 acquired U.S. right at Cannes this year. Shooting is underway at Pinewood Studios and on location in Toronto.
Larson stars as Ma, a woman kidnapped as a teenager who has been held captive for years in a tiny room where she lives with her 5-year-old son Jack. To the boy, it’s the only home he’s ever known. But as Jack’s curiosity is building alongside Ma’s own desperation, she knows that room cannot contain either indefinitely. Donoghue adapted the script from her book, itself partially inspired by the case of Austrian woman Elisabeth Fritzl, who escaped from a basement in 2008 after a 24-year...

Exclusive: Just as they prepare for tonight’s Sundance premiere of the Michael Fassbender-starrer Frank, the pic’s backers, Element Pictures, have made a first look deal with Lenny Abrahamson to hatch film and TV projects for the Frank writer/director to script, direct and produce. Frank is their latest collaboration; before that they made Adam & Paul (with Speers Film), Garage and What Richard Did, along with the TV series Prosperity. Frank is one of the pictures most often mentioned to me by hopeful buyers. The film stars Fassbender, Domhnall Gleeson, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Scoot McNairy; it’s an offbeat comedy about a band led by an enigmatic genius lead singer who hides himself inside an oversized fake head. The film is an Element Pictures/Runaway Fridge production for Film4, BFI, Protagonist Pictures and the Irish Film Board. Abrahamson and Element are putting together a slate that will include...

The Tudors reigned supreme at the fifth annual Irish Film & Television Awards in Dublin on Sunday night, walking away with seven IFTAs, the most any single TV or film title has gained in the award's five-year history.
The Showtime series about the life of King Henry VIII, won the best drama series/soap award, while actors Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Maria Doyle Kennedy and Nick Dunning also won IFTA statues.
"Tudors" costume designer Joan Bergin, production designer Tom Conroy and hair and makeup team Jennifer Hegarty and Dee Corcoran also were winners on the night.
On the feature film side, a strongly contested race saw "Kings" and "Garage" emerge as the top winners, with five and four awards, respectively.
Irish-language drama "Kings" dominated the craft categories, taking nods for original score, sound and editing, among others, while "Garage" picked up the IFTAs for best film, director (Lenny Abrahamson), script (Mark O'Halloran) and actor in a lead role (Pat Shortt).
Writer/director team O'Halloran and Abrahamson also earned the top writing and directing kudos on the TV side for their urban drama series "Prosperity". Irish-language series "The Running Mate" took the best single drama award.
Mel Gibson was presented with the Outstanding Contribution to World Cinema Award and received a standing ovation.
