Apple has landed a multi-year, first look deal with David and Jessica Oyelowo’s Yoruba Saxon banner.
As part of the deal, Yoruba Saxon will exclusively develop and produce both features and series for Apple TV+ on a first-look basis.
Previous and upcoming film and television projects from the studio, which is headed by the Emmy-nominated actor, producer, and director alongside his wife, who also serves as an actress, writer and producer, include: “Nightingale,” “Captive,” “A United Kingdom,” “Come Away,” “Five Nights in Maine,” “The Water Man,” “Ferguson Rises,” “Solitary,” “The Return of The Rocketeer,” “Onyeka and The Academy of the Sun,” “The After,” “Biafra,” and Apple’s upcoming “Government Cheese.”
Most recently, the studio developed Paramount’s “Lawmen: Bass Reeves.” Starring and executive produced by the “Silo” alum, the new series scored more than strong opening numbers, setting a record as the most-watched global series premiere of the year for Paramount+.

Exclusive: Brett Gray (On My Block), Kara Young (The Punisher), Allius Barnes (Cruel Summer) and Olivia Washington (Lee Daniels’ The Butler) have been cast as series regulars opposite lead Jharrel Jerome in Prime Video’s absurdist dark comedy series I’m a Virgo, created, written, directed and executive produced by Sorry to Bother You writer-director Boots Riley. Mike Epps and Carmen Ejogo are set to recur in the project, which is a co-production between Media Res and Amazon Studios.
“Our cast is hard as hell. Our cast slaps everyone else’s cast around on the playground. Sorry. I’ve spoken with the principal about this and there’s nothing more I can do,” Riley said about assembling the principal cast of the show.
I’m a Virgo is described as a radical coming-of-age joyride about Cootie (Jerome), a 13-foot-tall young Black man who lives in Oakland, CA.
Character descriptions are not being released,...

ViacomCBS and MTV Entertainment Studios have struck an exclusive overall deal with Emmy-nominated actor David Oyelowo and his wife, actress, writer and producer Jessica Oyelowo, for original scripted and unscripted series via their Yoruba Saxon productions. 101 Studios will serve as production partner on all projects.
In their first project under the pact, David Oyelowo is attached to star in the titular role in Bass Reeves, a limited series about the legendary lawman of the wild West, produced by Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan, who also is under a deal with ViacomCBS. Reeves was known as the greatest frontier hero in American history and is also believed to be the inspiration for The Lone Ranger. Reeves worked in the post-Reconstruction era as a federal peace officer in the Indian Territory, capturing over 3,000 of the most dangerous criminals without ever being wounded.

The year is 2044, there is a lot more people on the planet and they are running out of stuff… in this ambitious, sci-fi action film; which IMDb estimates it cost 10,000 pounds to make. I cannot help but appreciate the aspiration of writer, and director, Luke Armstrong. One of the most ambitious effects in Solitary, is the comb over on our heroes’ head. Issac Havelock, the name of our follically challenged hero is a superb sci-fi meta joke. As is calling the computer “Eva.”
Issac wakes up in a capsule, with a lady. Both seem to have committed serious crimes and they are floating in space above the earth. Suddenly there is an explosion, and some level of confusion.
What follows is a slow burn, mystery whodunnit as our “Adam and...

David Oyelowo and director Nate Parker are collaborating again on the drama “Solitary.”
The film also stars Olivia Washington, Barry Pepper and Jimmie Fails. Oyelowo will play a wrongfully imprisoned man who’s been released after seven years of solitary confinement. Washington will portray his fiancé. Production starts next week in Vancouver for Bron Studios.
Parker is also directing Oyelowo in “Sweet Thunder,” a biopic about boxing great Sugar Ray Robinson. During a conversation as part of Variety’s Virtual TIFF Studio, Oyelowo defended his decision to work with Parker, saying, “He is a good person beyond his fallibility, beyond the mistakes he made. And I believe in redemption.”
During the 2016 promotion for Parker’s “Birth of a Nation,” reports emerged that Parker and his “Birth of a Nation” co-writer Jean McGianni Celestin were accused of rape in 1999. Parker was acquitted and Celestin’s conviction was overturned on appeal. Their...

Written, directed, and produced by visual effects artist-turned-filmmaker Luke Armstrong, the aptly named Solitary, is a self-contained science-fiction/thriller set in an over-familiar futuristic dystopia. Out-of-control climate change, overpopulation, and dwindling resources lead nominally democratic Western governments to make radical, life-altering decisions for their citizens (specifically prisoners facing life sentences). It almost begs to be evaluated on a gentle, forgiving curve, primarily due to its micro-budgeted origins, an intriguing premise that began life as a five-minute short, and a single set or set Armstrong and his small band of dedicated collaborators fully exploit to create a sporadically engrossing, occasionally entertaining diversion. When we first meet Issac Havelock (actor-producer Johnny Sachon), he’s waking up from a bad dream straight into a dread-inducing nightmare. He’s stuck on a...

Inspired Pictures have announced that British sci-fi thriller, Solitary, will be releasing across multi-platforms and in all major retailers on Monday 31 August. Set in a dystopian future, the film is the feature debut from Luke Armstrong, starring Lottie Tolhurst and break-through star Johnny Sachon.
Solitary opens up in the year 2044 with the Earth on the brink of destruction due to its rapidly depleted resources. Prisoner Isaac Havelock (Sachon) wakes up on board a space pod to find out he’s been condemned to life on Earth’s first colony with no way home. As he wakes, he realises he’s not alone, as he’s greeted by the mysterious Alana Skill (Tolhurst), and together they start piecing together what’s happened and try to plot a course back home.

The idea behind the Local Voices ad campaign is to capture the concerns that everyday Americans have about presidential hopeful Donald Trump in unscripted, personal commentaries that later air as one-minute ads in the same swing state communities where they were filmed. The key is to find voices who belong to community leaders who aren’t normal Hillary Clinton supporters, may they be conservatives or generally apolitical figures.

In swing states where the voters have been confronted with constant barrage of political ads, the other key ingredient is authenticity, so they are not dismissed as just another manufactured political message.
To accomplish this, founder Lee Hirsch (“Bully”) turned to fellow documentary filmmakers and recruited some of the top filmmakers working in nonfiction, including Amir Bar-Lev, Amy Berg (“West of Memphis”), Marshall Curry, Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady...
