- When a man who's been missing for two weeks is found dead in the woods near Midsomer, Barnaby finds connections between him and a magazine editor known for his killing reviews of local hotels and restaurants.
- Christina Finleyson's ex-husband, who left Midsomer for London years earlier, is found dead in his car in the woods at the back of Christina's house. Inquiries lead to the hotel where Christina's brother Martin is the head barman and a mystery man booked in with an appointment to see Guy Sandys, editor of the glossy 'Midsomer Life' magazine. Sandys is found stabbed to death after expecting to receive an envelope. When alcoholic hotel housekeeper Eleanor Crouch voices her suspicions about the mystery guest, she ends up dead in a tumble dryer. Barnaby discovers that years earlier, a miscarriage of justice had been perpetrated which only now certain people are aiming to rectify and which the original criminal is anxious to keep secret, striking at the heart of Midsomer life.—don @ minifie-1
- DCI Barnaby and DS Jones investigate the death of Charlie Finleyson of London who is found dead in his car in the woods. His wife Christina had reported him missing some two weeks before and his car is found not far from the home of Guy Sandys, the publisher of the Midsomer Life magazine and to whom Christina was married before she ran off with Finleyson some three years ago. Sandys has a reputation for writing less than flattering reviews about local businesses so when he is found dead in his office, there is any number of suspects. Matt Moorcroft, the owner of the local hotel, is about to get a terrible review in the next edition of the magazine; Martin Reid, the barman at the hotel, saw his restaurant go bankrupt after one of Sandys' reviews; and Julia Benson, who worked as Sandys' editor, was having an affair with him. The police search for a link between the two murders but the solution lies elsewhere.—garykmcd
- Days after Christina Finleyson reported her husband Charlie and his car missing, he is found murdered in the vehicle in the woods near the home of Guy Sandys, the wealthy publisher of the Midsomer Life magazine, for whom Christina left Charlie three years ago. Sandys waves advertising income to afford his vicious criticism, which compromises local hospitality enterprises. His latest target was the hotel run by failed (after a brutal Sandys review) restaurant chef Martin Reid, owned by generally disliked local entrepreneur Matt Moorcroft, whose mother demanded he keep on gossiping lush Eleanor Crouch as the receptionist. Sandys is found stabbed next; he had an affair with his ambitiously cutthroat editor Julia Benson. Barnaby and Jones must also wade through the other staff, hotel suppliers, and guests, notably London rowdy Brad's gang, magazine illustrator Gemma Platt, and her recluse brother Gareth, whose homemade charcoal is just what Joyce's barbecue needs. But Tom has his doubts about recently released from jail but possibly falsely condemned guest Tomlin. After bragging she knew the killer, Eleanor is murdered in the hotel.—KGF Vissers
