- TriviaMartin Smith did not want to include testimonies from Russian emigres in this episode, since he thought that they would bring an anti-Soviet agenda to an interview. He sent monthly requests through the Soviet Embassy in London and the Russian news agency, Novosti, to travel with a film crew to Moscow to interview Red Army veterans, but did not initially receive any responses. As such, the original edit of this episode did not feature any interviews. However, sometime after its completion, Novosti informed Smith that it would be possible for him to travel to Moscow and interview Red Army veterans, as long as he agreed to work with a Soviet film crew. Consequently, the episode was re-edited to include the interviews that he recorded in Russia.
- Quotes
Himself - Narrator: No country, no people, suffered so terribly in the war, as the Soviet Union. Nowhere else are the memories of war so alive today, and so profound. The German invasion brought about a catastrophe which seemed at first no nation could survive. In the siege of Leningrad alone, which lasted for over two years, more human beings died than the total war dead of Britain and the United States, combined. Yet it was here that Hitler was broken. The Russian people faced the possibility that they might perish, and overcame it.
