How does a tiny documentary become a hot Ben Stiller comedy? "Quantum Hoops" was Rick Greenwald's 2007 documentary that follows the CalTech basketball team in their quest to gain a win after 21 seasons of nothing but losses. Narrated by David Duchovny, the film made the rounds on the festival circuit and earned a fair amount of press, but not a distributor; Greenwald released it himself in six cities before ...

Yet another non-fiction film is about to get a fictional Hollywood remake this week as Ben Stiller and Disney are joining forces to bring the basketball documentary Quantum Hoops to the masses. I had not even heard of this documentary up until now, but I have to admit, it actually sounds pretty great. The movie follows the 2006 Caltech Beavers (yes, Beavers) basketball team in their quest for the team's very first win. They are a ragtag group of super geniuses with little to no athletic skill who have spent 21 seasons getting obliterated by their opponents. When former Ncaa coach Roy Dow comes on board, they finally start to believe that they might have a shot at winning. Does this sound like the next Cool Runnings or what? According to Deadline, Ben Stiller and Stuart Cornfeld will produce the fictional remake through their Red Hour Films banner. No word on a director yet,...

Everyone loves an underdog story. If we didn't, the entire "sports movies" genre wouldn't exist. There's something immensely satisfying about watching a plucky team of losers get motivated and train hard enough to become champions. It's an extremely flexible premise, working in heavy dramas like last year's The Fighter and hilarious comedies like Major League. This new project hopes to fall in the latter category. Disney and Ben Stiller's production company Red Hour Films has purchased the remake rights to the 2007 documentary Quantum Hoops and plans to turn the true story into a fictionalized comedy, according to Deadline. The documentary, directed by Rick Greenwald, is about the CalTech college basketball team that over the course of 21 years and 245 games never managed a win. The new film will be about the team hiring a "exiled Ncaa coach" to try and lead them towards a single victory. The script will be...

Exclusive: Disney has acquired remake rights to Quantum Hoops, the 2007 documentary that followed the 2006 Caltech basketball team that had 21 seasons and 245 conference games without a single win, routinely getting walloped by 60 points or more. Ben Stiller and Stuart Cornfeld's Red Hour will produce a comedy based on the story of a group of brainiacs -- future political and industrial titans -- who tried to overcome a lack of athletic skills by getting an exiled Ncaa coach to lead their team to what seemed for two decades an impossible dream: one in the W column. The script will be written by Stan Chervin, who was the first writer to adapt Michael Lewis' Moneyball (Chervin emerged from an arbitration with story credit, while screen credit on the upcoming Brad Pitt film went to Steve Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin.) Red Hour's Erica Steinberg brought in the project and will be executive producer along with Brian Truman,...

After last week's ridiculously crowded release schedule, this week's is somewhat more manageable.
"The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian"
Fans salivating at the prospect of some post-Middle Earth fantasy creature smackdown were left disappointed last time around as, for all its promise, initial "Narnia" installment "The Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe" possessed about as much bite as a hibernating tortoise. Looking to fill the hole left by a certain boy wizard in the summer release schedule, the second adventure into Narnia sees the four Pevensie siblings summoned back to the fantastical world to find that 1300 years have passed and their former kingdom lies in ruins. Joining forces with heir to the throne Prince Caspian (Ben Bames), the children lead a renegade army into battle against the tyrannical King Miraz, seeking to restore Narnia and bring about peace once more.
