- Patty goes on the offensive in her battle with Ultima National Resources and its CEO Walter Kendrick. She goes on television and accuses him not only of polluting with his West Virginia coal mine but of having arranged the murder of Daniel Purcell's wife. Her goal is to drive the stock price down and so justify a shareholder lawsuit. Kendrick and his lawyer, Claire Maddox, file a $200 million libel suit. Arthur Frobisher has some advice for Kendrick on how to deal with Hewes. Ellen may have a break in the investigation of her fiancé David's murder when his sister, Katie Connor, recognizes the man who was following her - wearing a police uniform. She asks her FBI contacts for help but when they refuse, she turns to Patty for help.—garykmcd
- Katie drops by Ellen's hotel room. She gives Ellen the security deposit from her and David's condo. Her parents packed everything up. Katie tells Ellen she doesn't have to go back there.
Patty goes on Greta Van Susteren, ragging on Ultima National Resources, calling Kendrick a "corporate thug." She brings up Aerocyte. She says a consultant proved it was toxic and his wife is now dead. When Greta asks if she's implying Kendrick was involved with the murder, Patty clarifies: she's outright saying it.
Claire Maddox meets with Kendrick and tells him he should be concerned about Patty. They have to shut her up. Claire wants to sue her for defamation. Kendrick says that'd just keep the story alive.
7 Weeks Earlier
Kendrick checks in with Darrell Hammond the fix-it man, who asks what he wants him to do. He's "taking care" of things.
At the office, Tom asks Patty if she's sure UNR is behind Christine Kendrick's murder. She's not, but she wants to make it personal. Patty wants background on Claire to know what they're up against.
Claire dresses in a hotel room as Daniel Purcell lays in bed. She asks why he didn't tell her about his history with Patty. He says it wasn't relevant. She says he won't see her again. It's gotten too complicated. She came to tell him in person. And, apparently, judging by his nakedness and her tousled hair, to do other things.
At work, Ellen gets a call from Katie. She was robbed. At the police station she answers questions and waits to fill out forms. She sees a tall officer talking to another one. She recognizes him as the man who followed her on the street last season, the one she turned and confronted and screamed at to stay away from her (not knowing he had a weapon in his hand). She takes out the cell phone and he sees her taking a picture.
At Ellen's, Katie freaks out. He followed her when Frobisher was trying to get her to sign a confidentiality agreement. Ellen promises if Frobisher had anything to do with it, they'll find the connection.
Ellen gets into the FBI guy's car. She has a cop she wants them to look into. They say they can't help because they're not investigating him.
She goes to Patty, who says her resources are Ellen's.
Stalker Cop meets with the cop who killed David. Stalker knows Katie saw him. David's Killer tells Stalker that Ellen has been meeting with the Feds. David's killer says he'll handle it.
Kendrick's pal Dave goes car shopping. He buys an Escalade without test-driving it. He'll pay cash.
Cut to that Escalade driving down a darkened alley at night. He gets out.
Patty tells Ellen that the financials on the UNR merger don't make sense. Ellen asks if she's concerned about the Feds looking into her. Patty says they just have to keep their eyes open. She's agitated, in the mood for a fight.
Kendrick and Dave meet at an art gallery. They're both ready. Dave gives Kendrick the keys.
At the ballet, Kendrick goes to sneak out for a cigar. Frobisher stops him, introducing himself. He's using a cane. Frobisher isn't a fan of ballet. "You'd think, 'What could go wrong with a pretty girl in a leotard?' But that body type does nothing for me," Frobisher shares. "I like 'em a little meatier." Actually, Kendrick is a fan. They talk stock. Frobisher noticed the dip of Kendrick's. Frobisher brings up Patty. He asks what Kendrick did to her anyway. "Take this from me, don't engage with her," Frobisher says. He uses some colorful language to advise Kendrick to just take whatever she dishes out.
Frobisher walks away and Kendrick immediately calls Claire telling her, "Sue the bitch."
Tom briefs Patty on Claire. She was hand-picked by Kendrick 18 years ago for his legal team. There are also rumors about a relationship between them. Tom still doesn't understand why she'd call Kendrick a murderer on television. She's trying to drive down their stock price.
A server brings by the suit for defamation for $200 million. Patty appears amused.
Ellen goes by her old apartment. There are boxes everywhere. She looks at a picture at the two of them and remembers David.
The creepy president of the co-op board drops in. He has a bag that was delivered a while back. He's been hanging onto it. It's a wrapped present. Ellen opens it. It's from David. It says: "When the Frobisher case is over, I'm taking you away somewhere with palm trees. I love you."
Ellen starts to cry.
Tom, Patty and Claire and Kendrick, meet over the suit. Tom defends Patty by saying the murder allegations are true, which is a great defense for defamation. Patty sits sweetly, deferring to her attorney. They both talk big about the implications if it goes to court.
Patty grabs Ellen for Chinese in her office. Ellen asks if they're serious about the defamation suit. Patty isn't sure yet what else Kendrick is up to.
Kendrick pulls up to Darrell Hammond and tells him to use the keys he gave him. He gives him a note: "11.12.02"
Ellen tells Katie about the package from David. He ordered it before he died. It was her wedding present. She hasn't opened it.
Claire tells Kendrick she thinks she knows what Patty's game is. They know she's trying to drive stock price down, but she might be angling to have grounds to file a suit on behalf of the shareholders for poor management to stop the merger. Claire wants to settle, but Kendrick wants to fight. She asks him if he really wants Patty going through his dirty laundry. He responds by inviting her to dinner.
Katie waits outside the Internal Affairs Bureau of the police. David's killer watches her go in.
4 Months Later David's Killer waits in another car, watching Ellen walk into her hotel. He follows her up. He opens the door and walks in.
At Kendrick's dinner, Claire arrives. One of Kendrick's friends is sweet on her. Claire finds Kendrick at the bar, where he admits he was trying to set her up. But she wants an answer about settling with Patty. He agrees.
Katie tells Ellen about filing a complaint with the IAB. She thought Ellen wasn't doing anything. Ellen presents her dossier on Eliot the Stalker Cop. He's been suspended half a dozen times and reinstated. Someone is clearly protecting him. Katie doesn't understand why Ellen keeps relying on Patty. She says if Ellen had never met Patty her brother would still be alive. Ouch. Ellen says she spends plenty of time blaming herself and she's handling things, trying to make them right, but Katie wouldn't understand. She finishes up by saying Katie has a bad track record of life decisions so she should let her handle it. Katie tells Ellen to go to hell.
Claire asks the tattooed young stallion in the bedroom to zip her up. It's not Kendrick's friend. It's the waiter from the restaurant. Claire leaves.
Darrell Hammond (sorry, but we don't know his name yet), gets in the Escalade and punches the numbers Kendrick gave him into the GPS. Tom and Claire haggle over the settlement. They agree to $5 million to Kendrick's favorite charity. The NRA. No, she's kidding, it's an environmental charity.
Outside, Patty and Tom feel good about the settlement. Patty knows the only reason was to stop their stock from dropping and keep her from finding a plaintiff. "Too late," she says.
Back inside, Claire Maddox is served. Patty is suing UNR on behalf of a major shareholder.
Patty thanks the shareholder for his discretion. It's Arthur Frobisher. (Your head just exploded, right?)
Frobisher clarifies that they're not friends, he's in it for him.
Ellen leaves Katie a message apologizing. The unopened wedding present looms. Her phone rings.
Patty calls. At her place, she tells Ellen her news about the shareholder and the lawsuit. She doesn't say who. Ellen tells her things are going fine with Katie. Patty says she hopes they can trace the cop back to Frobisher.
Stalker Cop and David's Killer Cop meet again. Stalker remains worried. Killer says they need to do what they should have done a long time ago. Then he takes out a gun and kills his fellow officer.
Flashback to them killing David. Then Killer cop telling Frobisher there's nothing about David's death that can get back to him.
4 Months Later In Ellen's hotel room. Killer cop enters and hears Ellen singing in the shower. She thinks it's Wes. He screws a silencer onto his gun. She calls again for Wes.
And...fade out.
