Patrol in Pain
chase18fiore27 June 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Season 1 was just so amazing that Season 2 has some large shoes to fill. With these first three episodes, it's doing a pretty good job so far. It's seems like the central storyline is finding Niles a new source for immortality, while focusing on the Patrol's personal struggles. Larry seeing one of his sons was great, and I wonder if he'll be able to reconnect with his whole family. Rita's journey into becoming a superhero is my personal favorite because I adore her character. Jane's other personalities aren't happy with how she's acting as primary, and have locked her up. This might be the most intriguing storyline so far, because we don't know who will step up to the plate as primary. Cliff continues to lash out at Niles, for good reason, and wants to reconnect with his daughter. He's just going about it all wrong. Now that Niles has seen what it's like to be in Cliff's shoes, maybe "Robotman 2.0" will make reconnecting with Clara easier. Dorothy is also an excellent addition to the cast, and I really want to learn more about her "imaginary friends". Also, I really hope Niles can fix Danny!! I hope this isn't supposed to mean they're dead. Vic's storyline may be my least interesting to me at the moment, but maybe it's because I don't like the team being split up. I like Roni so far though, and I'm interested to see where her relationship with Vic goes. Overall, it's been a great start to the season and I'm so excited Doom Patrol is back!

Creepy

Once again, this episode focuses on every character and gives them an emotional arc. This episode sees flashbacks between two characters that were particularly heartwarming. We also see a spooky, yet fun villain arrive, who does some strange and gross activities.

Red Jack provides another fine villain for another fine episode

Be prepared. This is probably the most violently dark episode in the show.

Visually, this episode looks great. At first, I had my doubts about the visual changes from Red Jack's original comic appearance. But, on viewing I really liked the look. The actor does a great job as the villain.

Again, this is a pretty darn good character piece with the whole cast. Another great look at the complex Niles Caulder. However, I did feel that Robotman behaved in a manner a little too cartoonish.

Pain for the main characters

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is about their ( Doom Patrol ) past. Things get dynamic, when they have to save one of them from Red Jack's hands. In the episode we have three diffrent storylines, one with Robotman and Jane another one with Dorothy and the third one that is the main story the one with Larry, Rita and Niles. Red Jack was a very promissing villian but one of the problems in this second season is that they kill the villians too fast, but expecting that Red Jack can be back. There's a very interesting point about Niles character and his past with Jack the Ripper or Red Jack.

I haven't seen anything special in this season so far unlike the amazing first season.

Warning: Spoilers
I kind of agree with couple of the other reviews on this episode, it feels like there are a lot of unimportant stuff happening that will not progress the story at all for the sake of just going through with the episodes and fill the episode quota ordered by the network.

First of all, i'm really not liking the Vic minor story-line at all, not only it feels out of place and predictable, but also I don't feel like him and the actress that plays Roni have chemistry at all.

Moreover, I feel like the villian in this episode, Jack The Ripper died so easily. Maybe they only used him to give more growth to Niles's character and try to redeem him with " Robotman 2.0 ", but still the actor of Jack did a great job and they could have given him more screen-time and maybe defeat him without killing him so that he can comeback in later episodes.

The Jane,& Cliff stuff is good and interesting so far, they're dealing with their regrets and traumas , can't wait to see what unfolds.

Rita and Larry are a great duo as always.

How do you make something good, better?

Warning: Spoilers
By putting in more characterization. Morrison's original Red Jack story was good, mostly because of the creepy nature and visual flair of the villain. But it didn't have much connection to the Doom Patrol of the time. It mostly focused on the connection to former teammate Rhea, who even then wasn't an integral part of any incarnation of the Patrol.

So what we get with this episode is a focus on Red Jack, and his newly-established connection with Niles. And a focus on the pain that Larry has been going through. And getting Rita involved while exploring a little bit of her back story with Larry, as opposed to more recent members like Cliff and Jane.

Red Jack is also helped by Roger Floyd's performance. He manages to capture the Red Jack of the comic books. Floyd is aided by the writers, who give Red Jack a bit more of a personality then he had in the comics.

The Vic Stone subplot isn't doing anything for me. For one thing, disconnecting him from his supposed teammates doesn't do him, them, or the show any favors. What's the point of Vic being on the show if he doesn't interact with the rest of the team? It was always iffy why Vic was on the show, and this episode and the previous one don't help. Yes. Vic will reunite with the rest of the Patrol eventually as we've seen in the promo photos for upcoming episodes. But that doesn't make this episode and the previous one any more interesting for him. He's got his own little subplot, and that's nice. But it doesn't tie in with anyone else on the show.

The Dorothy thing is just waiting for the other shoe to stop. We haven't had any of the Candlemaker talking to her since the season 2 premiere. So it's just waiting for the other shoe to drop. Eventually she's going to make her wish and unleash the Candlemaker on Earth. Got it: get on with it, folks. I get that they're trying to build up to it, but there's no building so far.

The Jane subplot was interesting, but kinda unnecessary here. And Brendan Fraser's vocal performance is always good. But they just felt like filler in this episode, like the writers couldn't fill the episode with the Red Jack/Niles/Larry/Rita plot. So they filled the time with these subplots (and Vic's), rather than write a full episode focusing on Red Jack and the team members previously mentioned. Yes, they both feel pain, and the theme of the episode was pain. But by not connecting them to pain connoisseur Red Jack, it didn't give any purpose to their subplots other than to involve the characters in the episode but not the main story.

So the episode was okay, but mostly because of Red Jack and the parts with Niles, Rita, and Larry. Not so much with Vic, Cliff, Jane, or Dorothy.

But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. What do you think?

Potential wasted on filler

Warning: Spoilers
The villain did such a great job in this episode! And then he died in the most simple and obvious way.... he can telepathically materialize anything in his dimension and get inside people's heads, but a crippled man stabs him in the neck and then he dies? Did no one ever fight back ever against him ever?

The costume/set design were great and there were some helpful plot advancements but this episode really seems to have let a lot of potential slip by in filler. I'm also wondering how slowly they will unveil all of Jane's personalities and how many "ultimates" will come out. They haven't really teased any "final boss" personalities since Kate, who has now come out a few times. I'm sure there will be a new one this season

A bit filler-y, but the rita/larry relationship gets some development which is very nice! They're my favorite duo in the show, and I would love more episodes like this one, where they help each other out.
