- Niles records a video saying that the viewer must understand about his daughter if one wants to understand what he's done.
London, England: 1927
Niles learns of the traveling carnival, and how the Beast is one of the features and it is linked to the woman he tried to keep secret from the world. Dorothy is also advertised as one of the features. The ringmaster presents Dorothy in her cage and she soon summons the Beast. Niles recognizes it as belonging to the woman he love and left. It sees Niles and recognizes him, then goes on a rampage, killing most of the audience and the carnival performers. Candlemaker appears and glares at Niles, and Dorothy emerges from her cage and sees Niles.
Approaching Dorothy, Niles shows her a piece of parchment with a drawing of the Beast on it, and then a drawing of Niles' wife. Dorothy wonders how he knows her mother, and Niles leads her out of the circus. Two years later Dorothy barely ages a day, and Niles has Danny the Alleyway take Dorothy in and protect her from the world... and the world from her. Niles promises Dorothy that he'll visit her as often as he can, but he has to figure out how to be the best father he can be.
In the present, Cliff asks Niles why he did what he did to Cliff and the others. Niles explained that he search the world for a way to outlive Dorothy, and he began his experiments in true immortality with Cliff and the others. The only thing keeping him alive is the talisman on the necklace, and he gave it to Willoughby in return for the magical substance that returned them to normal size.
Cliff wonders what it was all for if Niles gave away his longevity, and Niles angrily says that it was the only way to make things right. Without him, Dorothy will unleash hell on earth and Cliff will be powerless to stop it. Cliff wants to know one more thing: the night of his accident.
Darling appears in Jane's room and cheerily tells Jane to wake up because their father is dying. Jane screams in shock, and Darling screams in shock and floats away through the ceiling. Jane's selves manifest briefly, asking Jane why they're still there, and one of them says that it's time for a change. Jane says that she's doing fine and tells the other selves to stay in the Underground, and doses herself with the last of the serum to suppress them.
Rita and Dorothy are having breakfast. Jane comes in and says that Darling came by her room earlier that morning. Dorothy says that what Darling said isn't true, and Rita wonders what they're talking about. The girl says that she heard Niles and Willoughby talking but insists that it isn't true. Jane finally tells Rita that Niles is dying, and as Cliff comes Rita asks him if he knew. Cliff says that he knew and karma is a bitch, and Dorothy insists that her father isn't dying and storms off.
The trio confronts Niles, whose hair is graying, but he says that there's nothing to fret over. He says that he's 139, and when Rita gets upset Cliff asks her if she's going to get upset about the man who killed Cliff's wife. Rita says that Niles is not only flawed but dying, and they're days away from daddy diapers. Jane points out that if Niles dies, someone will have to take care of Dorothy. She won't let him go to the home where the old Patrol is, and Niles points out that his daughter was safe on Danny for 90 years. Rita points out that it could take ages for Danny to grow from a brick, and the only thing keeping Dorothy from unleashing hell is them.
Niles stops them from arguing, saying that he'll work it out. Cliff figures Niles has planning for their entire life, and asks which of their immortalities he'll choose for himself. Larry comes in and says that Niles won't be any of them, because they're Niles' failed experiments. He says that his son is dead and Rita hugs him in sympathy. Larry figures that Gary didn't even know that he existed, then leaves.
After a moment, Niles tells the others that they turn to their own because his fate doesn't concern them anymore.
In Detroit, Vic goes to a trauma group meeting. A cane-using ex-soldier, Roni Evers, talks about her guilt over a mother's death, and he looks at Roni and remembers his own mother. Roni finally asks why Vic is allowed to show up late, and the facilitators tells her to give Vic a chance and finish her own story. Roni does so but then says that she can't do it and sits down. The facilitator asks who else wants to share, and Roni says that no one is going to want to share with a cyborg in the room who can record everything they say. Vic says that he doesn't have a choice, and the facilitator says that the group is a safe place and they don't allow recording devices there. He tells the group that he can't turn off the recording because it's tied into his defense systems and would leave him vulnerable, and Roni points out that's the point of a trauma group.
Vic powers down his optical system and the facilitator thanks him, then asks him if he wants to share. She asks why he's there, and Vic starts to talk. He then says that he's just going to listen.
Niles goes to Dorothy's room and knocks at the door. He begs her to talk to him, and Herschel the spider pops out and says that he's "Armageddon" tired of all the knocking. Herschel retreats back into Dorothy's room through the closed door, and when Dorothy talks through the door, Niles talks back saying that nothing is going to happen to him. She says that he can't promise that and he's going to die soon, and she doesn't know how to cook or drive. Niles says that he'll find a way, and refuses to let her make a wish to save him. Dorothy agrees not to make a wish and apologizes.
Cliff goes out to where Jane is unloading the bus. She says that she's moving back in, and says that she needs Nile and Cliff can do whatever he wants. Cliff wonders why Jane needs Niles, and Jane says that she's out of serum and things are getting weird in the Underground. He asks if she needs help, and says that all she needs to do is talk to him. Jane angrily tells him to do what he wants but without her, and tells her to go off and be co-dependent on his own, and walks away.
Rita goes to see Niles in his lab, and finds him muttering over his equations and saying that it's not enough. She agrees with him that he's made a terrible mess of things, and figures that Niles had a plan. Rita says that he's not going to mope around while death catches up to him, and notices that he's looking at a fragment of metal. Niles explains that it's continuminium and it can bend time. Rita thinks that it sounds promising, and he tells her that Jonathan Tyme found the one piece on a piece of meteor. Niles has Tyme's journal, and Tyme was a normal man until he touches the continuminium and went mad, and gained the ability to manipulate time. The journals entries are dated throughout time, and Niles says that Tyme traveled through time and his legend grew, until he was known as the Terrible Dr. Time. Rita wonders how they find him.
After the group meeting, Vic approaches Roni as she cleans up the coffee cups. He helps her and she sarcastically asks if he's going to rust. Roni says that she's sorry she called him on his camera eye, and Vic tells her that she shouldn't apologize because she's not sorry and he's not upset. He says that he's grateful because he doesn't know the rules, and apologizes for interrupting her share. Roni says that she's been saying the same thing for months, and he talks about he lost his mother as well. She asks how she died, and they talk about how they both died in accidents. Vic says that he understands the guilt, but he's there because he's dealing with post-traumatic stress. Roni isn't impressed and Vic invites her out to dinner.
Rita briefs Jane and Cliff on Tyme, and shows them an artist rendering of Tyme. She explains that if they can steal Tyme's helmet with the continuminium and stop Niles from dying. Jane figures that they should do it so they don't have to put Dorothy in a cage. Cliff can't believe they're bailing out Niles after what he's done, and says that he's out. Niles comes in and agrees with Cliff, and says that the mission is too dangerous. He's sent three Normalcy Bureau agents after Tyme over the years, and none of them returned.
Cliff is surprised that Niles doesn't want them to go, and wonders if it's reverse psychology. The robot immediately agrees to go on the mission. They go to Niles' lab and he explains that Tyme is encapsulated in a temporal sphere between space and time. He chips off a fragment of the fragment and powders it, and says that they must be on their guard because Tyme uses time as a lure and a weapon. Niles uses the powder to create a traversable wormhole so they can travel into Tyme's capsule. Cliff steps into the circle first, and then Jane and Rita join him. They hold hands and perform a ritual, remembering where they all were on a particular date and time. Nothing happens, and Niles figures that someone is misremembering or lying. Cliff finally says that he was having an affair, not sleeping as he claimed.
The trio land in Tyme's capsule, and a door appears in the darkness. The doors open and the trio step through. They're on a disco floor, and the Bad Girls Skaters roll out and boogie. Tyme comes out and dances on his roller skates, and freezes one dancer in time with a beam from the continuminium in his helmet.
Tyme skates up to the trio and introduces himself, and says that he's a big fan of Rita. He beams skates onto Rita's feet and invites her out to the dance floor, and she takes his hand and joins him.
Vic and Roni leave the restaurant after their dinner, arguing about onion rings. They both agree that they're glad they went out, and Roni heads home on her own. A thief grabs Roni's purse, and Vic hears Roni yell and runs over. Before he can get there, Roni takes out the thief with her cane then throws him to the street. Vic compliments her on her moves and says that the cops are on their way. Roni didn't want the cops involved since the thief is just a kid, and she asks Vic to give the thief a chance. They argue about whether to let the kid go to jail, and Roni says that nobody should be judged by the worst thing they ever did. Vic tells the kid to leave. Once the kid runs off, Vic looks expectantly at Roni but tells her that it's nothing. She walks off and Vic smiles as he watches her go.
In Greensboro, Indiana, Larry watches his son's funeral from a distance. Gary's brother Paul gives the eulogy, and says that they loved Gary. After the funeral, Larry comes over and puts his hands on the coffin in mourning. Paul comes over and asks if Larry was a member of Gary's pirate radio truther club. When Larry says that he doesn't know anything about it, Paul recognizes his father's voice. Larry says that he's Paul's father, and Paul is surprised that Gary was right. They agree that it's a lot, and Paul's grandson pulls up to give him a ride. Paul starts to go, then invites Larry to come to the wake they're having for Gary.
At the disco, the DJ announces the couple's skate. Tyme tells Rita that it never got as good, and humanity peaked there. Jane waves to Rita, who yells that she's trying. Tyme admits that he hoped Rita was there for more than his continuminium, and says that he doesn't know the future because he prefers to live in the moment.
Jane leads Cliff out onto the dance floor and neither of them know how to skate. Cliff smashes the record player, sick of the same music over and over. Tyme frees Cliff and goes over to him. Rita gets angry and stretches, pulling Tyme down and knocking the continuminium out of his helmet... along with his brain. The various dancers, some of which are warriors from different ages, fight to get the brain for themselves.
The brain starts firing out blasts of time. Cliff grabs it and Jane grabs Cliff, and sees her own past when a preacher tried to exorcise her insanity. Cliff experiences Niles putting his brain into the robot body.
Rita apologizes to Tyme, saying that she didn't know his brain was the continuminium. She moves the hands on Tyme's clock mask back, rewinding time and freeing her teammates. Tyme comes back to life, grabs Rita's wrist, says that he's seen her entire life from birth to death, and tells her that her mother was right about Rita and no matter how hard Rita tries, she'll never be anything but a fraud. He says that she's out of the party, snaps his fingers, and Rita, Cliff, and Jane reappear in Niles' lab.\
Jane walks off, furious that they failed again. Cliff figures that Niles wants them to act as his assassins, and Rita slaps Niles and says that he turned them into freaks to do one thing, and they even do that. She walks out and Cliff stares at a shocked Niles.
Larry goes to Paul's house and looks in through the window. He sees Gary's family assembled, then walks away. The Being glows in Larry's chest as he passes Gary's barn, and Larry goes inside. There are newspaper clippings about Larry's disappearance, that Gary gathered to learn what happened to his father. The wreckage of the X-15 is there along with a photo of Larry, and there are letters to Larry from Gary that Larry never got. Larry reads one of them, where Gary asks if his father went to space, and Larry cries. As he cries, a butterfly lands on his back.
Jane sits in her room and looks at herself in the mirror. She remembers the preacher and his congregation trying to cast out the demons within her, and her mother Elena ignores Kay's pleas for help as the congregation presses snakes up to her then dunk her in a bathtub of water to exorcise her demon. Kay's personality changes with each submerging, until one personality--Miranda--comes up from the Underground, stops the preacher, and yells that she's saved.
Later, Elena prays to God for cleaning Kay. Miranda tells her that no holy water will ever purify the sins she let the sin her home continue. If Elena wants those sins to remain buried, she'll call Kay "Miranda". Jane and the Secretary watch and Jane says that she's never seen the scene before. The Secretary tells her that change isn't all bad and Miranda was powerful before they were subject to metahuman experimentation. Jane asks what made Miranda so powerful, and the Secretary tells her that Miranda knew what Kay wanted.
In her room, Jane wonders if it's time for a change, to let Miranda be the primary.
Dorothy goes to Rita's room. The girl asks if Rita can help her, and Rita says that she can't even help herself because she's an utter failure. Dorothy tells her she doesn't need that kind of help, and Rita is soon in the kitchen with the girl showing her how to cook.
Cliff watches the video of Niles saying he will do anything for his daughter, and Cliff's daughter was expendable. The ex-driver cows that he won't let Niles chop him up.
At the wake, Paul looks out the window and sees Larry emerging from the barn. Larry walks down the highway leading away from the house, trying to hitch a ride without success. A butterfly lands on his thumb as he holds it out. Larry looks at it and it flies away, and Larry follows it to a nearby field filled with butterflies. They all fly down and form a cloud around Larry.
