- Starfleet must once again call on legendary Jean-Luc Picard after members of his former crew - Cristóbal Rios, Seven of Nine, Raffi Musiker, and Dr. Agnes Jurati - discover an anomaly in space that threatens the galaxy.
- Picard is back on his vineyard tending to his grape crops. Retired admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) rejects the romantic advances of his housekeeper Laris (Orla Brady), a year-and-a-half after the death of her partner Zhaban. Picard remembers that he chose to be alone because his mother Yvette (Madeline Wise) had an abusive relationship with his father. But Yvette encouraged Jean-Luc that whenever he heard them fighting, he should imagine how tiny their voices would sound from the vastness of space. So tiny, that they would not be heard.
Picard gives a speech to a new class of cadets, including his former ward Elnor (Evan Evagora ), in his role as chancellor of Starfleet Academy. He says that time, and not space, is the final frontier. Picard talks about his early cousin Renee, who was instrumental in exploring the solar system. Elnor is assigned to the USS Excelsior.
Picard visits his old friend and bartender Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg) to talk about his life-long avoidance of romantic relationships. Guinan says that Picard has done several brave things of one particular kind but has shied away from the bravery required to accept and reciprocate love. Picard says that it is too late in his life for that. Picard never tells Guinan why he went to the stars in the first place. Guinan says the answers are not in the stars and never have been.
Seven is on the La Sirena ship. The ship's computer tells Seven about a Spatial anomaly detected in their Galaxy. The anomaly is a rip in the space time fabric.
Soji (Isa Briones) is on planet Raritan IV in the Beta Quadrant. Soji is now functioning as a diplomat. She walks around with the passing Agnes while discussing her recent breakup with Rios because his job was stressful just before Agnes is ironically picked up by Rios aboard the USS Stargazer.
In deep space, Captain Chris Rios (Santiago Cabrera) and Dr. Agnes Jurati (Alison Pill) of the USS Stargazer investigate an anomaly that broadcasts a request to negotiate entry into the Federation with Picard. The Starfleet contacts Picard to reach the location in person to help make sense of the situation. An unknown entity with the ability to rip apart hole in space-time, wants to join the Federation. Picard leaves without telling Laris.
They are joined by Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), a vigilante flying Rios's old ship La Sirena, and a fleet of star-ships including the USS Excelsior which has Elnor and Picard's old first officer Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd) on board.
Stargazer (the original one) was Picard's first command. The new Stargazer is the first of a new class of ships, which derives components from research done on the Borg Cube Artifact. When Picard arrives, a Borg ship emerges from the anomaly. In response Starfleet assemble a large fleet to face the Borg ship in case of a battle. Picard is not sure what to do, but Seven is clear that the Borg consumer and Assimilate. Jurati says that the situation is unique and Starfleet might be putting a bullet into the best ally the Federation has ever known.
The Borg offer to sent their Queen for negotiations. Rios raises shields in response as he doesn't want a Borg on his ship. The Borg transports their Queen (Annie Wersching) onto the Stargazer by penetration the ship's shields. The Queen plugs herself into the Stargazer and starts assimilating the ship by taking over its controls. Using the Stargazer as a hub, the Queen begins assimilating the entire fleet, prompting Picard to initiate the Stargazer's self-destruct.
After the self-destruct explosion, Picard wakes up in a version of his home (the uniforms are a different color in all the pictures) and is greeted by the extra-dimensional being Q (John De Lancie), who has returned to test Picard again.
