For years, Warner Bros. has been exhausting itself trying to come up with ways to make a sequel to its 2007 hit I Am Legend, despite the unwillingness of star Will Smith to return for a follow-up. Now, it appears that the studio has finally found a way to turn the post-apocalyptic tale into a new franchise – thanks to a spec script written by a former Apple employee.
Gary Graham wrote A Garden At The End Of The World, described as a “sci-fi version of The Searchers,” while working at an Apple store in midtown Manhattan. After he posted the spec script on the Black List website, CAA and manager Brooklyn Weaver came across it and promptly signed him, sending the script around Hollywood.
Now, Warner Bros. will reportedly retrofit the script into an I Am Legend follow-up. Graham has been tapped to do rewrites in order to connect his original idea to the previous film,...

Warner Bros has given up trying to make a sequel or prequel to the Will Smith-headlined I Am Legend. It's going for a reboot instead.
This story contains - or implies at least - a spoiler for I Am Legend.
It's been just six years since the Will Smith-headlined take on I Am Legend proved to be a monster hit in cinemas. Since then, Warner Bros has been dabbled with how to make a sequel to the film which, er, isn't narratively the easiest thing to do given what happens in the first movie. At one stage it was going down the prequel route, but it couldn't find a way to make it work.
So it's hatched a new plan: it's going for a reboot. Hurray.

Shall we play another game? Not that we have much of a choice – MGM is moving full steam ahead with a remake of the 1983 cult classic WarGames.
Dean Israelite, who made his feature directorial debut on next January’s anticipated sci-fi Project Almanac, is in final negotiations to helm the film for MGM. He’s been the top contender for a few months, ever since Seth Gordons stepped away from the project. Additionally, we’ve learned that The Fault in Our Stars and Mud breakouts Ansel Elgort and Tye Sheridan (respectively) are currently atop MGM’s shortlist to lead the movie.
Both actors are highly in demand at the moment. Elgort is currently filming Divergent sequel Insurgent for Summit Entertainment, and he also recently locked down the starring role in Cold War-set biopic Van Cliburn. And for his part, Sheridan has upcoming films Grass Stains, Dark Places, The Forger and...

Back in 2007, I Am Legend – starring Will Smith – proved to be a huge hit after grossing over $585 million worldwide. That success obviously led to talk of a sequel, but for whatever reason, it just never happened (despite numerous reports to the contrary).
Co-writer and producer Akiva Goldsman recently sat down with io9 to talk about his upcoming adaptation of Mark Helprin’s 1983 novel, Winter’s Tale, and the subject of a follow-up to I Am Legend quickly came up. After quite clearly stating that there was “never” talk of an I Am Legend 2, he added:
“Oh no no, [there was] never a movie. I mean, we wrote a prequel [and] a sequel. We had a really interesting prequel, which was the first outbreak of the virus, during a Thanksgiving Day parade, which was awesome.

While promoting his upcoming "Winter's Tale" film, Akiva Goldsman spoke about the sequel to Will Smith's "I Am Legend" that never actually happened despite the fact that the first movie grossed almost $600 million at the box office. So why didn't we get a sequel? "Oh we tried," he said. "There were scripts. We really tried. We wrote a prequel [and] a sequel. We had a really interesting prequel, which was the first outbreak of the virus, during a Thanksgiving Day parade, which was awesome. We did [another] really interesting prequel that [took place] later, which was right after the first [outbreak]. Right when the population of humans became pretty decimated. And it was this sort of trek to Washington. Which included a dark seeker elephant that had broken out of the zoo." It was a year after "I Am Legend" hit theaters that Smith started talking about a prequel being in the works, teasing that his dog would return,...

Akiva Goldsman, out stumping for his feature directing debut Winter’s Tale, chatted with iO9 about the I Am Legend sequel that never came to be. The writer and producer spoke rather openly about the project, which Hollywood seemed desperate to get Will Smith back for- despite his character’s fate in the original film. But it seems that this one went the way of Independence Day 2, with Smith refusing to take part in any planned follow-ups. Without Smith, there could be no I Am Legend 2, so Goldsman talked a bit about what might have been:
“I mean, we wrote a prequel [and] a sequel. We had a really interesting prequel, which was the first outbreak of the virus, during a Thanksgiving Day parade, which was awesome. "Independence Day" is finally getting the sequel fans have awaited for nearly two decades, but its biggest star won't be coming along for the ride.
Will Smith, whose role in the 1996 alien-invasion blockbuster helped propel him to megastardom, will not be appearing in "Independence Day 2," director Roland Emmerich told the New York Daily News on Saturday. "He's too expensive," Emmerich lamented.
That admission comes hot on the heels of Thursday's announcement that 20th Century Fox would be bringing the highly anticipated sequel to big screens on July 3, 2015. The news capped more than a decade of speculation about the long-gestating sequel, but it was not immediately clear whether or not Smith would be involved. That uncertainty wouldn't last long.
"Will Smith can not come back because he's too expensive," Emmerich told the Daily News, "but he'd also be too much of a marquee name."
"It would be too much," he said.

Kidman as Kelly: A sure thing for the 86th Academy Awards Best Actress roster? Could Nicole Kidman earn a Best Actress Academy Award nomination early next year for playing 1954 Oscar winner Grace Kelly in Grace of Monaco? Is it to soon to start with Oscar 2014 predictions? Hardly. After all, bear in mind that The Weinstein Company has already bought the North American rights to the Olivier Dahan-directed Grace of Monaco, which, according to reports, will possibly be released some time around Christmas 2013. Also, let's not forget that Kidman has already received no less than three Academy Award nods in the last decade, winning the golden statuette a decade ago for Stephen Daldry's three-part drama The Hours. When asked about the in-development sequel I Am Legend 2, which he was reported to be a producer on, Will Smith recently clarified:
“Producers are working on it. I’m not actually working on it. If it’s great, I’m into it.”
So they’d better come up with a take that’s legend…wait for it…dary.
Come to think of it: Barney Stinson fighting vampires in a post-apocalyptic future? Sold. They should cast Neil Patrick Harris immediately. And Will Smith can be in it too.
And I Am Legend...Wait For It...Dary could include a song which goes "The nightmare's real / Doctor Le-gend-wait for it-dary is here / To make vampires quake in fear / So hail to the awesome..." You know, for the Doctor Horrible's Sing-a-Long Blog fans who are still waiting on tenterhooks for Doctor Horrible 2. That is, basically all of them. What's a tenterhook?

If IMDb is to be believed, the star of Men in Black 1, 2 and 3 has plans to make Hancock 2, Bad Boys 3 and I, Robot 2. Which films do you want to see Smith revisit?
It's never the most reliable of indicators but, if IMDb is to be believed, Will Smith is going to spend the next few years dwelling exclusively on well-trodden ground. After the success of Men in Black 3 – although that's a relative term, based on whether or not you believe "slightly better than Men in Black 2" to be a valid definition of success – the site would have you believe that Will Smith is only interested in making sequels from now on.
Apparently, after starring in the next M Night Shyamalan movie and a film about a magical horse, Will Smith will make Hancock 2. And then Bad Boys 3. And then, in 2015, I, Robot 2. Add to...

Superstar Will Smith, the most bankable actor working today and the man who recently chose to end a four year absence from movie screens to star in Men in Black 3, has now shed a little bit more light on why he turned down the leading role in the next Tarantino movie.

I was in the middle of Men In Black 3 and [Tarantino] was ready to go, and I just couldn’t sit with him and get through the issues, so I didn’t want to hold him up. Back in February it was reported that Warner Bros. and Overbrook Entertainment (the production company owned by Will Smith) had begun working with producer Akiva Goldsman to craft a sequel to the 2007 winter blockbuster I Am Legend. What was interesting about the report, however, was that it said Smith would likely return to the film as Robert Neville, despite the fact that the character met an unfortunate end at the finish of the first movie. This was explained away by saying that I Am Legend 2 wouldn't be a direct sequel, but instead would just tell a different story in the same universe, but now it's looking like Smith may not be involved at all. In an interview last month with the BBC (via Movies.com), Smith revealed that he actually doesn't have a hand in the development of I Am Legend 2 and isn't contractually obligated to return for the sequel.

Arash Amel has been hired to rewrite Methuselah for Warner Bros. Variety reports that the I Am Legend 2 writer will get a page-one rewrite of the action-adventure film. James Watkins (The Woman in Black) is directing the film, which is being produced by David Heyman (Harry Potter franchise) under his Heyman Films banner. The first draft was written by Watkins. Methuselah has always sounded like a fascinating action-adventure project with serious franchise potential, but we can.t decide whether Variety.s news that it.s getting a top-to-bottom rewrite is good or bad. The original Methuselah draft was penned by The Woman in Black director James Watkins, who plans to helm this feature, as well. The story follows a 1,000-year-old man who, according to the trade, has "used his time on the planet to develop an unparalleled set of survival skills" (and we can.t read that sentence aloud without thinking of Liam Neeson.s Taken character). Maybe Warner Bros. will look to Neeson when it comes time to cast Methuselah. With major tentpole films such as “World War Z” and “GI Joe: Retaliation” recently experiencing major structural changes, in both cases executed well after the majority of the film has been shot, the public awareness of just how much behind-the-scenes finagling occurs has gone up ten-fold. This is according to stories over the weekend, which suggest that writer Arash Amel has been brought in to write an I Am Legend 2 script, with Will Smith acting as producer and possible star.

Looking at Will Smith's IMDb page makes you want to put the movie industry under six feet of dirt. The actor is currently listed with 38 in-development projects that include Men in Black III; Bad Boys 3; I, Robot 2; Hancock 2; Independence Day 2; Untitled I Am Legend Prequel; The Karate Kid 2; and Independence Day 3. It's total sequel overload, particularly for someone who only has 20 film acting credits to his name. Luckily, however, two of them won't be happening for a long time. Director Roland Emmerich recently spoke to Empire and revealed that while there was some big talk about sequels to Independence Day in the last two years, they aren't even close to being put together. Rumor has it, "I Am Legend" prequel might no longer be a prequel. In an unconfirmed twist related to "Untitled I Am Legend Prequel", AICN has broken out the possibility that the second movie to the blockbuster horror thriller starring Will Smith may instead be a sequel as their scooper Westwood9 came out with an update about the project.
Reporting on the matter, Westwood9 firstly explained that at the beginning, Warner Bros. went along with Smith's initial story which "took place several years before the original film and there were still pockets of survivors". But after screenwriter D.B. Weiss and Smith officially joined the project, they allegedly decided to shake things up by making the project a sequel. Despite this report, Warner Bros. have yet to come out with confirmation nor denial on the sequel potential.
Back in late September, Warner Bros. Pictures have confirmed that the prequel of "I Am Legend" is en route.

Warner Bros. Pictures have finally confirmed that the prequel of "I Am Legend", "Untitled I Am Legend Prequel", is in the works. According to Variety, the studio have set the project in motion as the film's star Will Smith, who is returning as Dr. Robert Neville, and director Francis Lawrence are reportedly going to collaborate once again for the new project.
