Lisa Thornhill: Detective Sheila Madsen
Quotes
-
Detective Sheila Madison : [at police station, about to wire bare-chested Tom] You have a romantic interest in the subject?
Tom Massick : [uncomfortably] No. And what difference would that make?
Detective Sheila Madison : [business-like] It determines where we place the transmitter. If the subject is... Veronica...
Tom Massick : Veronica Koslowski.
Detective Sheila Madison : If Ms. Koslowski is likely to embrace you, then we'll place the transmitter in the groin area, where it can't be detected by casual contact.
Tom Massick : [doesn't want that] Well, then I'll make sure she doesn't embrace me.
Detective Sheila Madison : Then I'd suggest the small of your back.
[walks around him]
Tom Massick : [softly] All right.
Detective Sheila Madison : This is the transmitter,
[shows him]
Detective Sheila Madison : and this where the microphone will be attached.
[touching his chest]
Detective Wheeler : [entering] Can we get a move on with this?
Det. Heuston : I don't think so. Detective Madison is enjoying this too much.
[chortles at Tom's discomfort]
-
Tom Massick : [bare chest] She knew I was wearing a wire. I was set up.
Detective Wheeler : Well, no one in this office told her.
Tom Massick : How can you be so sure?
Detective Wheeler : Hey, look, you're out of line, sir. Sheila, Marty's out sick, I need you to make the lab run.
Detective Sheila Madison : But I'm just finishing a double shift!
Detective Wheeler : Hey... I knew you'd do it.
[goes off]
Tom Massick : [while getting dressed] Look, uh, Detective Madison, I'm really sorry for running off at the mouth.
Detective Sheila Madison : You're not the first, and you won't be the last.
Tom Massick : It, uh, doesn't justify what I said. I really am sorry.
Detective Sheila Madison : [joking] I guess I won't arrest you then.
Tom Massick : And I do appreciate everything you've done for me.
Detective Sheila Madison : It's just my job. You got everything?
Tom Massick : Yeah. I think so. Except, uh... my glasses.
[a fabrication]
Tom Massick : You seen my glasses? Oh, damn, I must have left them in Veronica's apartment. May I use your phone?
Detective Sheila Madison : You're gonna call her after what happened?
Tom Massick : [playing helpless] I, uh, I need a taxi.
[shrugs]
Tom Massick : I can't drive without my glasses.
Detective Sheila Madison : Well, where are you going?
Tom Massick : Back to the riverboat.
Detective Sheila Madison : Mm.
[checks her wristwatch]
Detective Sheila Madison : If you can wait twenty minutes, I'll give you a ride.
Tom Massick : [she's taken the bait!] Okay.
-
Detective Sheila Madison : [as they drive away] I thought we'd never get out of the station.
Tom Massick : I'm grateful for the ride.
Detective Sheila Madison : No problem.
Tom Massick : I, uh, really appreciate you taking pity on a guy who, uh, doesn't really deserve it.
[surreptitiously reaching for the evidence bag and slipping out what he wants]
Detective Sheila Madison : Why are you so down on yourself? Talking from experience, not every guy would do what you did trying to save your girlfriend.
Tom Massick : Reese isn't my girlfriend.
Detective Sheila Madison : She's not your girlfriend?
Tom Massick : Just business partners.
Detective Sheila Madison : [grinning] I wish I had known that when I had your shirt off back there.
-
Detective Sheila Madison : [stopping in front of the Savannah] There you go.
Tom Massick : Would you like to come in?
Detective Sheila Madison : I'm on duty.
Tom Massick : Call it research. Look, I'll give you a tour, okay, and if you ever have to chase bad guys on a riverboat, then, you know, you'll know your way around.
Detective Sheila Madison : You're a piece of work.
[climbs out as well]
-
Tom Massick : What can I get you to drink?
Detective Sheila Madison : On duty...
Tom Massick : Then I'll... get you water.
[pours]
Detective Sheila Madison : [looks around, sighs] You own all this?
Tom Massick : I do own what my partners and creditors... don't own. Which pretty much, uh, comes down to these glasses... minus the ice.
-
Tom Massick : [making a toast:] To, uh, truth, justice, and... the most beautiful angel of mercy a guy could ever hope for.
[she closes her eyes as he kisses her tenderly on the cheek, then he clinks her glass]
Detective Sheila Madison : You're too good to be true, you know that?
Tom Massick : Unfortunately, yes, I do.
Detective Sheila Madison : Give me time, I'll find a flaw.
Tom Massick : My apartment is upstairs, and you can have all the time you need.
Detective Sheila Madison : [puts down her glass] I have to be somewhere. Thanks for the drink.
Tom Massick : Thanks for the ride.
-
Tom Massick : [a knock on the door] Come in.
Detective Sheila Madison : [entering] Tom. The evidence I was carrying inside of the envelope, did you see it?
Tom Massick : Yes, I have it.
Detective Sheila Madison : [relieved smile] Thank goodness.
Tom Massick : Um, I'm keeping it.
Detective Sheila Madison : [smile fades] Why?
Tom Massick : Because I do not want Reese Burton to stand trial.
Detective Sheila Madison : That evidence has nothing to do with her case.
Tom Massick : I know.
[nods]
Tom Massick : I wanna make a deal.
Detective Sheila Madison : You are a piece of work.
Tom Massick : [graciously] Thank you.
Detective Sheila Madison : No way in hell am I making a deal with you!
Tom Massick : Well, I was hoping I could convince you otherwise, uh, for both our sakes.
[switches on video recording]
Tom Massick : The security cameras caught it all.
[image of Tom and Sheila at bar]
Tom Massick : Now what do you think the police commission and Internal Affairs would think of that? It looks to me like you're consorting with a civilian while on duty. Note the time and the date of the tape.
[boisterous laugh, then he imitates police inquiry:]
Tom Massick : And it also appears that you are on very intimate terms with that man. Did you stop and meet with your lover while on duty, Detective Madison, when you were supposed to be delivering important evidence to the laboratory? And is that alcohol you're consuming?
Detective Sheila Madison : I can arrest you.
Tom Massick : You can, but you will not find the evidence that you allege that I stole. And after a very ugly, long, public internal investigation, you will be dismissed from the police force.
Detective Sheila Madison : You son of a bitch...!
Tom Massick : [holding up a finger at her] Temper!
Detective Sheila Madison : What do you want?
Tom Massick : I want an innocent woman to go free, I want you to have a very long and distinguished career in law enforcement, and we can accomplish both of these things if we work together.
