The Emmys are once again almost upon us and there is nothing I find more satisfying than looking down a list of nominees. I don’t know, I just really like it. Anyway, I know many people might not care too much about the Emmys, I’m more of a Golden Globe man myself, but you do have to give it to them for giving 30 Rock the Emmy for best comedy two year in a row, if you don’t know that show Rocks!! So here’s the list and a few comments I thought I’d add to the nominees.
Best Comedy Series
Entourage
Family Guy-Really hope this show doesn’t win, not a big fan as so many others are.
Flight of the Conchords-i’d really like to see this show win, but it definitely won’t.
How I Met Your Mother-I’d also like to see this one win too.

Since the EMMYs have 2,741 categories, we only focus on two things: first, how our favorite shows did and second, which big screen stars other than La Pfeiffer (she's always there with her television kingpin husband) will show up. Which of them got nominated for their small screen sojourns whether longform or more movie-like?
Speaking of which...
Drew Barrymore on the set of Going the Distance
Yes, you, Drew. But you knew she knew (everyone knew) that her affecting work in Grey Gardens as "Little Edie" was going to make the grade. "Big Edie" Jessica Lange also won a nomination for the narrative feature based on -- but also sort of jumping off from and commenting on -- the famous beloved documentary of the same name. I hope to have an interview with their director here soon.

The nominees for the 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards were announced today in Los Angeles, and the show to garner the most nods was 30 Rock, which received a record 22 nominations for a comedy series. With the Emmys expanding their number of nominees from five to six in certain categories, some new shows were finally able to get some recognition, although a few big shows were still overlooked in their final seasons: most notably The Shield and Battlestar Galactica. There are a ton of categories so I only included some of the major nominees below. For the complete list visit the Emmy Awards official website [1]. What do you think of the nominees? Did any of your favourite shows get left out? What are the biggest oversights? Our two resident Emmy experts — forum moderators Chris "Boomer" Beachum and Robert "Rob L" Licuria (AwardsHeaven.net) — also agree on the five men who will contend for best actor in a TV movie or mini-series. They anticipate Kevin Bacon ("Taking Chance"), Brendan Gleeson ("Into the Storm") and Kevin Kline ("Cyrano de Bergerac") earning their first Emmy recognition when nominations are announced on Thursday. Both of them think Ian McKellen ("King Lear") will land his fourth Emmy nod while previous champ Kenneth Branagh ("Conspiracy") should reap his fourth Emmy bid in this category for "Wallender." And unlike the lead actress in a movie/mini race, both Boomer and Rob think this could be a competitive category with seven other actors in the mix. Best Movie/Mini-series Actor

Sir Ian McKellen is furious his nude scene was cut from a TV broadcast of 'King Lear' because he is too old. The 69-year-old acting legend was stunned by the Public Broadcasting Service's decision to remove his manhood-baring monologue from the TV production of the Shakespearean play when it aired in America on Wednesday night (25.03.09). He said: "The channel has its rules. It's all right to see someone have their eyes gouged out, but it's not right to see an old man with his trousers down." Ian played the tragic king on stage for 18 months, touring the world with the Royal Shakespeare Company. He said: "It takes a lot out of you but it's very rewarding. Having...

For All Of Us (Ianto) Jonesing For Some Torchwood Action
This is a big week for Torchwood fans.
The new Torchwood comic, “Captain Jack and the Selkie,” is finally being published in the U.S. Anticipation for this comic is particularly high, since it’s co-written by Captain Jack’s alter ego, John Barrowman, himself, along with his sister Carole (and I’ve got a terrific Q&A with Carole you’ll get to see in just a few).
Ordinarily, the publication of a comic might seem like small potatoes in the world of entertainment. But Torchwood fans have been craving any and all new Torchwood material for months. It’s been almost a year since the tearjerker Season Two finale aired in the U.S., and ever since, the blogosphere has been rampant with anxious speculation about Season Three. Sci-fi fans are such a bunch of nervous nellies about...

The way I see it, there are two ways Al Pacino playing King Lear can go down. It will either be a tremendous surprise, with Pacino showing the kind of depth he hasn't displayed in a decade or two, tinged with the subtlety that only experience can bring, or it will be absolutely embarrassing.
Variety reports that Pacino will play one of Shakespeare's great characters in a new adaptation directed by Michael Radford. The pair previously worked together on 2004's The Merhcant of Venice. Pacino is not just a big movie star; he's played many roles on stage (I saw him mangle Salome on Broadway in 2003), and he has had extensive work in Shakespeare. But I have trouble picturing him as King Lear.
The film will be shot in Europe later this year, and producer Barry Navidi says that this is finally the right time for Pacino to tackle Lear.

The Bloggies obviously you should take the time to nominate me for everything. I never make it -- they tend to only honor the blogs with millions of readers in bigger categories and they don't have a "best film blog" category -- but hope spring eternal!

Sir Ian McKellen's full frontal nude scene in a stage production of King Lear has been cut from a U.S. TV version of the play.
McKellen stars in network PBS' adaptation of the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of King Lear - but producers have decided to simply "suggest" the nudity, instead of showing the full, unedited clip.
The Lord of the Rings actor has no qualms about the decision, because now the nudity won't take the audience's attention away from the drama itself.
He says, "If it's a distraction of that sort, it's not worth the candle."
And McKellen, 69, admits he would often feel self-conscious when disrobing onstage for the scene.
He adds, "Every night, when I'd take my clothes off, you know what I used to do? Pull in my stomach. That's pathetic. I was playing an old man. I should have let it all hang out, and I couldn't do that."...

Okay, all you gay boys, try not to hate me because I just finished watching Broadway star Idina Menzel perform a selection of songs including "Defying Gravity" for 100 or so of us television critics here at the TCA in Los Angeles. Okay, you can hate me a little! At least Idina's adorable hubby Taye Diggs wasn't here, so you don't have to be jealous of that.
Aside from enjoying Menzel's talents, we had some one-on-one time with the one and only Sir Ian McKellen. Read all about it after the jump!
Menzel, who has a stunning voice, is also beautiful and very very funny. She shared an anecdote about recently meeting her two favorite icons — Barbra Streisand and Aretha Franklin — who apparently weren't exactly overwhelming with their praise of Menzel (but methinks Menzel was just being modest).

London -- U.K. indie Metrodome Distribution is brushing up on its Shakespeare, taking U.K., Irish, Australian and New Zealand ancillary rights to Trevor Nunn's stage-to-screen adaptation of "King Lear," starring Ian McKellen.
The deal was hammered out among Metrodome's Peter Urie, Sara Frain and Kate Edwards and Richard Price and Nigel Whitehouse for Rpta Ltd.
Metrodome negotiated the multiterritory deal in order to work closely with Rialto Distribution, who will be releasing the film in Australia and New Zealand.
Recorded in high-definition at Pinewood Studios after a sellout West End run at the New London Theatre, "Lear" is directed by Nunn and Chris Hunt.
King Lear will be released on DVD by Metrodome in the U.K. in October, then on Blu-ray in December. Channel 4 is planning to air the production on Christmas Day here. It will be released in Australia and New Zealand in early 2009.

Legendary actor Sir Ian McKellen sparked reports he will be appearing nude in a forthcoming TV show after a network executive dodged questions on the subject.
McKellen is set to star in PBS' adaptation of the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of King Lear in the autumn.
The actor has said how much skin will be shown will be decided upon "what I think about it and also what the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) will allow".
But when confronted about unedited scenes, network President Paul Kerger commented only on the actor's on-screen talents, adding: "It's powerful. His entire performance is quite powerful."...

A nude King Lear may be dandy for the Royal Shakespeare Company but PBS isn't sure.
Paula Kerger, Pbs president and CEO, said Saturday it was too early to say whether public television stations will show Sir Ian McKellen in the altogether when he appears in a filmed version of the performance, slated for broadcast in winter or spring of 2009.
"I haven't seen the taped version," Kerger said, when asked about the possibility PBS would censor the full frontal nudity in the stage performance. Besides, she added, "it's not what I think about it, it's what the FCC will allow.
"King Lear" was one of several highlights for 2009 announced by Kerger at the TCA press tour at the Beverly Hilton. Others are a 12-hour miniseries on America's national parks from super documentarian Ken Burns in the fall and a four-hour series on Latin music, "Latin Music USA," including interviews and performances by many of the biggest names in the genre, starting Jan. 21.
The Burns miniseries, broadcast over six nights, traces the birth of the national park idea through its fruition with archival material and high def cinematography. "Latin Music USA," from Wgbh Boston, starts with the mambo and the cha cha and moves up to urban fusion genres, such as Spanish rap and reggaeton.
Earlier in the morning, Sesame Workshop announced a new and updated version of "The Electric Company," which ran on PBS from 1971 to 1985. The new show, aimed at improving literacy for kids six through nine, will be a weekly series, beginning in January.
