Friendly local Lennart, a museum expert, bumps into schoolmate Maren, who plans to emigrate and start a surf school in Brittany, to her parents' grand silver anniversary party. Her mother Anna and sister Nelli welcome them warmly, only father Adam is grumpy as ever, feeling she deserted his country hotel, reputed for his haute cuisine, while Nelli stayed but only has commercial skills. Maren bought as gift a sassy portrait looking uncannily like her mother Anna, which causes her parents to row bitterly. Maren seeks Lennart's expert help to find the artist, to his astonishment signing as a gifted mystery painter who retired many years ago. They find out it's local recluse Oskar Kaufmann. She meets him incognito, suspecting Oscar may be her biological father. In the process, Lennart and she become intimate, but he also has a secret past.
