Dr. Julius Hibbert first appeared on "The Simpsons" in the episode "Bart the Daredevil". In that particular episode, Bart (Nancy Cartwright) was toying with the idea of being an Evel Knieval-type stunt performer, aiming to leap over Springfield Gorge on a skateboard. As a warning, Bart was taken to see Dr. Hibbert who took the boy to a special wing of Springfield hospital. In it were nothing but children who had injured themselves after imitating stunts they saw on TV. "I won't even subject you to the horrors of our Three Stooges ward," Dr. Hibbert gravely intones.
From 1990 through 2021, Dr. Hibbert was played by Harry Shearer. When viewers became sensitive to how many white actors have played animated Black characters throughout the history of animation, Shearer stepped aside and Kevin Michael Richardson took over the role.
Dr. Hibbert was kindly, bemused, but possessed of a strangely cold bedside manner. When Bart comes to see Dr.

As of this writing, a revival of Mike Judge's long-running animated sitcom "King of the Hill" (which initially ran 13 seasons from 1997 to 2009) is a little up in the air. Back in March of 2021, a revival was announced, followed by a year and a half of radio silence. Then, on September 7, 2022, the Hollywood Reporter announced that it wouldn't be broadcast on Fox. That's all the information currently known.
That "King of the Hill" should saunter gradually back to television without an ever-mounting level of fanfare seems weirdly appropriate for the show. "King of the Hill," which ran after "The Simpsons" and before "The X-Files" in many markets, was always the unassuming hit of '90s animated sitcoms. Generally affable and gently hilarious, "King of the Hill" lovingly poked fun at life in modern Texas with a knowing eye; Judge attended college in Texas and knew of what he spoke. Baratunde Thurston is adapting his memoir How To Be Black as an animated series for ABC.
The Disney-owned network is developing the project with Thurston, host of the How To Citizen podcast, and Black-ish showrunner Lilly writing and exec producing.
The project is also exec produced by Laurence Fishburne and Helen Sugland via Cinema Gypsy Productions. 20th Television Animation is the studio.
Thurston’s memoir How to Be Black focuses on the community and family that raised a young Baratunde in 1980s Washington, D.C.
Lilly, who renewed his overall deal with ABC Signature earlier this year, is currently showrunning Black-ish, which is in its eighth and final season.
It marks a new move for ABC into the animated space; if the show is picked up, it would be the network’s first animated comedy series since The Goode Family in 2009.

Silicon Valley is one of those premises, that if done wrong could be another vacuous Big Bang Theory clone. Luckily, the show had a secret weapon in Mike Judge, who I've loved since Beavis And Butt-head and who - in my opinion - can do no wrong (well, besides maybe The Goode Family). But not only that, it also has one of the best casts, with the likes of Thomas Middleditch, T.J. Miller,... Read More...

There wasn't an NBA Finals game on, but it was a good night for ABC nonetheless. The debut of the small screen version of Uncle Buck (1.5/6) scored the Disney-owned net the best summer comedy launch among adults 18-49 since the animated The Goode Family opened on May 27, 2009 with a 1.6/4. Uncle Buck also topped last year's NBC summer comedy debut of the now shuttered Mr. Robinson, which pulled in a 1.1/4 for its double episode premiere on August 5 last year in the same…...

A title coming out this week that you may have missed is the explosive indie game, Death By Game Show; a twitch-action and tower defense hybrid from developer Oointah.
The game takes place 500 years into the future, where droids now rule the world due to humans becoming irreversibly idiotic—and the earth’s new mechanical masters intend to keep it that way, sentencing any person with even just a tiny glimmer of intelligence to ‘Death By Game Show.’ Such is the fate of U.H. Wutt, a heavy-set hero who is by no means smart, but compared to the rest of his fellow men, he is practically Albert Einstein.
If the premise sounds familiar, it’s because the developers were heavily inspired by the 2006 comedy film, Idiocracy, which was written and directed by famed satirist Mike Judge. Judge is perhaps best known as the creator of such animated sitcoms as Beavis and Butthead,...

Before creating Silicon Valley— the new HBO comedy that Thursday morning garnered five Emmy nominations—Mike Judge says he “hadn’t had a hit in awhile.” Specifically, he was referring to a pair of high-profile 2009 projects: the ABC animated series The Goode Family and the Jason Bateman-led feature film Extract, both of which were received unenthusiastically by audiences. Despite those hiccups, flops have been the exception rather than the rule for the creator of Beavis & Butthead, King of the Hill, Office Space, and Idiocracy. So when it was announced that Silicon Valley was up for Emmys in Best Comedy,...

This is something we’ve rarely seen in the past couple of years — a No.1 Thursday finish for NBC. The network tied CBS and Fox for the top spot among adults 18-49 on the night where it had struggled mightily this past season. Burn-off comedy series Undateable showed spunk, premiering with a 1.3 in 18-49 at 9 Pm. It built onto its lead-in, Hollywood Game Night (1.2, up 9% from last week) to post NBC’s highest rating with regular programming in the 9-9:30 Pm slot since November 7. Undateable almost doubled the debut of another midseason-turned-summer comedy on NBC last year, Save Me (0.7 on 5/23/13) to post the highest-rated summer comedy premiere on the Big 4 networks in five years (since ABC’s toon The Goode Family on 5/27/2009) and edged one of NBC’s fall Thursday comedy debuts, Welcome To The Family (1.2 on 10/2/13). Undateable also held all of its demo audience for a second episode...

Mike Judge has been more successful on the small screen than on the big one. Compare the huge success of Beavis and Butthead and King of the Hill to the cult status of Office Space and outright obscurity of Idiocracy and Extract and you’ll see what I mean. Sure, he flopped on TV with his last show, The Goode Family, but in light of how enjoyable the first episode of Silicon Valley is, that misstep can be forgotten.
The problem with Judge as a screenwriter for movies is that he seems entirely unable to write a third act. With TV, he doesn’t have to. There isn’t the expectation of making the story fit into a conventional three act movie structure. He is free to focus on his strengths, which are memorable characters and an absolutely brilliant sense of social satire.

The Silicon Valley presented in the terrific new HBO comedy of the same name (it debuts Sunday night at 10) is a kind of Wild West for nerds: a lawless territory where they can be among their own kind rather than struggle to fit into a more structured world that doesn't understand them, and a place where they can seek massive fortune along the way. That vision of the Valley also fits HBO itself in a way, since it's long been a place where creative types with idiosyncratic personalities and specific, uncompromising creative visions could go to find success in a safer, more wide-open environment. It's where David Chase could go when he was on the verge of quitting the TV business altogether and tell the story of a wiseguy in therapy. It's where David Milch could go to be given the absolute freedom to succeed so beautifully with "Deadwood" (and...

Ever since college-bound Mike Wazowski (voice of Billy Crystal) was a little monster, he has dreamed of becoming a professional Scarer—and he knows better than anyone that the best Scarers come from Monsters University (Mu). But during his first semester at Mu, Mike’s plans are derailed when he crosses paths with hotshot Mu legacy James P. Sullivan, “Sulley” (voice of John Goodman), a natural-born Scarer. The pair’s out-of-control competitive spirit gets them both kicked out of the University’s elite Scare Program. To make matters worse, they realize they will have to work together, along with an odd bunch of misfit monsters, if they ever hope to make things right.
Screaming with laughter and oozing with heart, Disney•Pixar’s Monsters University is directed by Dan Scanlon (“Cars,” “Mater and the Ghostlight,” “Tracy”), produced by Kori Rae (“Up,” “The Incredibles,” “Monsters, Inc.”) and executive produced by John Lasseter.

Altschuler and Krinsky, who first worked with Judge on King of The Hill, will remain involved with Silicon Valley while focusing their attention to Ternion, their production company with Judge, which is behind Silicon Valley as well Geena Davis’ TNT pilot, ABC’s 2009 animated series The Goode Family and the movie Extract from the same year. Whether you're ready for it or not, a new animated take on "Woody Woodpecker" is going to soon be coming to a theater near you.
With the exception of a short-lived Saturday morning cartoon that aired on Fox in the late 1990s through early 2000s, Woody Woodpecker has been largely absent from the public eye ever since creator Walter Lantz shut down his studio in 1972. Now Universal is resurrecting the character with a very distinctive laugh, thanks to some help from Illumination Entertainment.

For the first time ever, we polled the entire Sos staff on their favorite TV of the last 12 months. We knew that, given the fact that our contributors are (principally) spread out across Canada, the Us, and Britain, that the results might well be a mixed bag. What we didn’t necessarily expect was the level of consensus surrounding the upper quartile of the list. There was a clear groundswell of support for our collective #1, but competition was fierce for the spots just behind it. Here are the 20 best TV shows of 2011, according to the staff as a whole; stay tuned for The Televerse’s year-end wrap-up, in which Kate Kulzick and Simon Howell discuss their respecive favorites – and least favorites – in greater detail.

Kicking off today's eclectic round-up of bits and pieces, it appears that Woody Woodpecker is tapping furiously on the doors of Hollywood.
The crimson-coiffed cartoon character with the distinctive laugh is heading to the big screen in a feature film planned by Universal's animation studio Illumination Entertainment.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, scribes John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky are in talks to develop a story featuring the boisterous bird, who first appeared on our screens in 1940.
The duo wrote and produced animated shows The Goode Family and King of The Hill along with an episode of Beavis and Butt-Head. In addition, they co-wrote the 2007 ice-skating comedy Blades of Glory starring Will Ferrell.
Another possible animated adaptation has resurfaced with Immortals director Tarsem Singh saying he wants to make a live-action version of Samurai Jack.
Singh, who declared he has little interest in comic book movies, told The Hollywood Reporter: "I love Samurai Jack.

They haven't been around long, but Illumination Entertainment is quickly establishing itself as one of the major players in the world of animated film. After establishing themselves with last summer's Despicable Me (which was met with a surprisingly positive critical response) the company put out the Russell Brand-starring Hop (which didn't really succeed on the same level). Currently in the works is an adaptation of Dr. Seuss' The Lorax and a sequel to Despicable Me, but they're not done yet. Now they're bringing back Woody Woodpecker. THR has learned that Illumination, which is a branch of Universal, is currently developing a feature film based on the feathered instigator. While things are still in the planning stages, John Altschuler and Dave Krinsky, whose previous work includes the 2007 Will Ferrell ice-skating comedy Blades of Glory, as well as multiple episodes of King of the Hill and The Goode Family, are...

NBC and Adam Levine are set to work together outside the unscripted world. Deadline reports that the network has landed a single-camera comedy project which is going to be executive produced by the Maroon 5 frontman, who serves as one of the judges/mentors on singing competition "The Voice", along with Jake Kasdan.
Kasdan is also attached to direct the scripted show, which has received a script commitment plus penalty. To be produced by 20th Century Fox TV and Chernin Entertainment, the comedy project is set at a karaoke bar and is said to organically blend comedy with a musical element.
Set to write the upcoming show is Gene Hong ("The Goode Family"), who happens to be Levine's longtime friend. Surprisingly similar to their comedy project, their friendship reportedly started at a karaoke bar.

The ensemble comedy set at a karaoke bar, which has received a script commitment plus penalty, is being produced by 20th Century Fox TV and Chernin Entertainment. I hear at least three networks wanted the project, which is said to organically blend comedy with a musical element, but NBC was very aggressive, largely because of the involvement of its reality star Levine. This marks the first major NBC buy from 20th TV since the studio's former Evp Jennifer Salke was named NBC entertainment president earlier this month. The auspices on the project are all interconnected in a classic Hollywood case of Six Degrees of Separation. Levine and the project's writer,...

Normal 0 false false false En-us X-none X-none We all love King of the Hill, Office Space, Idiocracy and even Extract, and we're sure the people who actually watched The Goode Family dug it, but for our money, Mike Judge's finest creation will always remain Beavis & Butthead.
Thankfully, at long last, our two favorite imbeciles are coming back to MTV with a new series debuting this year. We made sure we had bangarang seat for the Beavis & Butthead panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2011 so we could see footage from the show and hear Judge himself talk about his plans. Here's what we learned:
The panel was moderated by none other than Johnny Knoxville, who shared bottles of Miller Genuine Draft with Judge. Knoxville is an admittedly lousy moderator. Beavis & Butthead started as an animated short that Judge did while going to school to become a math teacher and working as a musician.

Comic-Con International has released the full schedule for Sunday July 24th for San Diego Comic-Con 2011. This is the final day of the convention. Sunday is known as Kids day and is usually the slowest of all the days, there are a few surprises though. In all my years of going to Comic-Con I've never been to a panel in Hal H. Usually nothing is happening in Hall H on Sunday, this year there are a few TV programs going on in Hall H such a as Glee, Supernatural, Doctor Who, The Cleveland Show, Sons of Anarchy, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and this year Buffy the Musical will be in the great Hall as well. I've never been to the Buffy Musical event, and I think I finally want to go this year. A couple of other things worth noting are a one on one panel with Nathan Fillion, and Max Brooks talks about zombies.

Johnny Knoxville is set to star in 'First Man'. The actor - best known for the 'Jackass' films in which he and a number of his friends do unusual and often painful stunts - would play a man who has to put his hard-partying life on hold when his wife is elected president of the United States. However, the couple face problems when the dynamic of their relationship shifts as a result of living in the White House, and he is tempted back into his previously ways. Paramount Pictures has acquired the project with Johnny in mind to play the role. In addition to 'First Man', the studio is also reconfiguring long-time project 'Mustache Riders' for Johnny to star alongside Bam Margera and Ryan Dunn - who worked with him on the 'Jackass' movies. 'Jackass 3-D' - which was released in October 2010 - grossed a total of $169 million worldwide,...

Fox will be adding a new animated series to its Sunday night line-up at 8:30 p.m. in the midseason (see Fox's full fall and midseason schedules) and we have a promo and three sneak peeks for you below.
Bob's Burgers is a new animated series about a man, his family and a burger joint.
A third-generation restaurateur, Bob Belcher (H. Jon Benjamin, Family Guy, "Archer") runs Bob's Burgers with the help of his wife and their three kids. Bob has big ideas about burgers, condiments and sides, but only a few thoughts on customer service and business management. Despite his greasy counters, lousy location and occasionally spotty service, Bob is convinced his burgers speak for themselves.
Even though business is slow, Bob gets to work with his family. His wife, Linda Belcher (John Roberts, "The Christmas Tree," "Jackie & Debra"), supports Bob's dream through thick and thin (but truth be told,...

He gave us Beavis and Butt-head, King Of The Hill and Office Space. As Mike Judge returns with Extract, John Patterson asks why he's still a Hollywood underdog
Listening to Mike Judge – creator of Beavis And Butt-head, King Of The Hill, Office Space, Idiocracy and now Extract – you can hear that same exasperation and horrified wonderment that underpins all his best characters. He um-ahs through his sentences towards what he's trying to say. "See, it's like, I mean, what I'm tryin' to say … " It's not that he's weak or shy, it's that he's a nice guy, and nice guys finish last, especially in Hollywood.
And yet, here he is, creator of two epoch-making TV shows and four movies, two of which are modern cult classics. Not bad for a guy who didn't even get started in TV until he was over 30. Before that he'd studied physics, worked in factories, played bass in touring bands,...
