The history of modern cinematography knows a number of decent attempts to depict the lives of zoomers who can’t help but compare themselves with their Internet idols. These include such titles as the massively popular Sex Education series (2019 - 2023) Jenna Ortega’s The Fallout (2021) and last year’s hit, Rachel Sennott’s Bottoms (2023).
However, there is a far more realistic portrayal of Gen Z seen in the 2018 indie coming-of-age movie, which managed to earn an almost perfect critical score of 99% on Rotten Tomatoes. Even though it was aired in 2018, we bet you still haven’t seen it.
Its plot revolves around Kayla, a 13-year-old girl who uses YouTube to post motivational videos and to show herself. The other side of her reality is that she struggles to get along with her classmates and to make her way through the last week of middle school.

After a particularly harrowing setback to his mission in The Fallout, the new series from Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy (Westworld), a bounty hunter known as The Ghoul (Walton Goggins) makes the executive decision to change course entirely. Although his less experienced traveling companion/prisoner protests, The Ghoul knows better. “The wasteland’s got its own golden rule,” he snarls. “Thou shalt get sidetracked by bullshit every time.”
That most of Prime Video’s Fallout consists of getting sidetracked by bullshit is simultaneously one of its main charms and one of its most frustrating flaws. At its liveliest, the sci-fi adventure captures the fun of simply getting to explore a strange new world, meeting colorful characters and going down mysterious rabbit holes. But the lack of urgency also means its eight hours take an awfully long time to get where it’s going.

Tom Cruise was on a winning streak with Top Gun: Maverick becoming the biggest hit of his career. However, his latest Mission: Impossible film surprisingly failed at the box office, losing somewhere around $40 million for Paramount Pictures. Despite receiving critical acclaim, the high production budget and several other unfortunate factors contributed to the film’s box office disaster. Amidst the financial failure, one critical aspect of the film was overlooked – its real-world relevance.
Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One
The film impressed critics and fans as it raised the stakes even more by introducing the most powerful villain yet. Ethan Hunt and his team had to take down a non-tangible AI villain, The Entity, in the film and their mission will continue in the next Mission: Impossible film.

The summer between the end of high school and for some, college, can be filled with an unequal combination of anxiety and anticipation. Anxiety of the unknown and anticipation of new and novel experiences, of new friends and new relationships, can be overwhelming. Via Canadian-born writer-director Megan Park’s (The Fallout) second film, My Old Ass, a heartrending, coming-of-age comedy-drama, that last summer before college can be both a time to celebrate future possibilities and mourn the loss of the past, including the family, parents, and siblings individually and collectively, left behind. For Park, the past may or may not be immutable, but remembering it free of nostalgia and recognizing the transitory nature of time, memory, and relationships are more than worthwhile: They’re essential. When we...

The deal is for roughly $15 million. Amazon MGM is targeting a wide theatrical release for the film in the U.S. and Canada, with international territories still to be determined. Like all of its titles, the ultimate home will be Prime Video.

After her feature directorial debut The Fallout (2021), a film about a high-school shooting, Megan Park was feeling the weight of its emotional aftermath. “When you make a movie, you live in that world for years,” she tells Filmmaker at Sundance Film Festival. “I wanted an escape, and I wanted to be nostalgic.” So she went back home to Canada and started thinking about what became the genesis of My Old Ass, a bittersweet coming-of-age comedy, and, gradually, a reflective tearjerker that left Sundance audiences sobbing. “It was this idea of the last time your whole family sleeps under one […]

It’s always a welcome surprise to encounter a fresh face who’s also a natural screen presence, which is very much the case with the captivating Maisy Stella in My Old Ass. Not to undersell the newcomer’s individuality, but I kept getting a crunchy granola version of Clueless-era Alicia Silverstone, which is no faint praise. The fact that Stella is often bouncing off Aubrey Plaza in peerless sardonic form just sweetens the deal. Megan Park’s enjoyable second feature is a warm blend of comedy, romance and whimsical collapsed-time fantasy, albeit grounded in the protagonist’s real world.
Not since Toy Story 3 wielded its power to reduce grown-ass adults to puddles of tears has a movie been so in touch with the tender feelings associated with leaving home and saying a definitive goodbye to childhood, wistfully contemplating what we take with us and what we leave behind.

Elliott (Maisy Stella) is ready for her life to start. The last 18 years? That’s been killing time, practice, kid stuff, and as we meet the teen on her 18th birthday, mere weeks before she’s about to leave her cozy Canadian lakeside community for college in Toronto (read: the real world!), Elliott is hellbent on leaving that stuff behind. In Megan Park’s warm-hearted “My Old Ass,” Elliott is forced to grapple — most unexpectedly, most literally — with the past and the present and the future, and all the iterations of her that will populate those time periods.
First, there are the mushrooms. Elliott and her best pals Ruthie (Maddie Ziegler) and Ro (Kerrice Brooks) ingest the hallucinogens to celebrate that key birthday, an experience that sees Ruthie talking to animals and Ro dancing to music only she can hear… and Elliott? She finds herself. More correctly: her old self finds her.

It takes some time to fall in love with 18-year-old Elliott in “My Old Ass.” As played by Maisy Stella, she’s young and self-involved, so focused on heading off to college in the big city that she’s kind of a jerk to everyone around her (especially her small-town cranberry-farming family). Maybe young adult audiences won’t think so. Canadian actor-turned-auteur Megan Park’s sweetly insightful coming-of-age comedy is intended for them — whereas adults might not have so much patience for the way Stella’s impulsive character takes for granted what are arguably her best years.
Don’t worry, the movie is great, and Elliott eventually grows on you. Besides, her initially off-putting persona is kind of the point of Park’s older-and-wiser second feature, which follows the director’s terrific SXSW-winning debut “The Fallout.” Park plays a magic trick early in the film: Elliott and her besties (Maddie Ziegler...

Time is the measure of success or failure in the streaming world. Gal Gadot’s “Heart of Stone” earned 143 million hours in its first 10 days of Netflix availability. That fell short of Chris Hemsworth’s “Extraction 2” and Jennifer Lopez’s “The Mother,” which each notched 175 million-178 million hours in that same time period. All three movies, along with Zack Snyder’s upcoming two-part film “Rebel Moon,” represent a swiftly disappearing notion in the streaming world: The big-budget, English-language streaming movie is becoming a comparative rarity.
As one industry executive told TheWrap, “Peak streaming is over, Wall Street no longer loves it.”
Compared to just a couple of years ago, the sheer amount of direct-to-streaming movies has plummeted. Netflix, which pioneered big-budget streaming movies, will release just above 40 English-language films in 2023, compared to 75 in 2022. Insiders and analysts blame a change in financial tune. Jenna Ortega’s done a lot in her time as an actor. She’s flexed her acting muscles in all kinds of scenes. Take the intense game of capture the flag in Yes Day. Or evading a killer in Scream VI. However, the Wednesday star’s revealed she had a particularly “terrifying” time acting like she was on ecstasy.

“The Graduates,” which counts Chloé Zhao and John Cho among its executive producers and gets its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival, revolves around school shooting survivors who are unable to move on even one year later. It’s a compelling subject, for sure, but one on which no dramatic treatments have been nearly as astute or profound as what’s already been in the news.

The holidays are sizzlin’ in “Reno 911!: It’s a Wonderful Heist,” a Christmas-themed sequel to the Emmy-nominated “The Hunt for QAnon.” Can the Reno Sheriff’s Department score another bid for Best TV Movie?
Jim Dangle (Thomas Lennon) is bemoaning his rotten luck – and Matt Damon’s Crypto.com ad – when Terry (Nick Swardson) arrives in the form of an angel to show the downtrodden lieutenant what Reno would look like had he never donned his iconic hotpants to patrol its streets. After delivering on the reference to Frank Capra’s 1946 classic, “It’s a Wonderful Heist” “unloads the funniest, weirdest gags that [Kerri Kenney-Silver] and Lennon can devise without resorting to cheap gimmicks, like character development or narrative tension,” writes Matt Schimkowitz (The A.V. Her latest film, Bloody Hell, marked the 20-year-old’s first leading role in a film. Turns out that the Pittsburgh native was ready and willing to do anything she needed to in order to secure a role in the cast.

Many actors dream of having their work be seen on a global scale. But, Jenna Ortega seems to be a bit of a reluctant celebrity. One of the actor’s latest projects, Wednesday, has quickly catapulted her into superstardom. Her portrayal of the teenage Adams daughter has been streamed billions of times over the last five months. Furthermore, the short dance sequence that she choreographed for the show has gone viral, with celebrities like Lady Gaga and Kim Kardashian reenacting the moves. But it seems that Ortega was hoping that that part of her performance would garner a lot less attention.

Maddie Ziegler is no stranger to performing. Fans of the entertainer will recall that she got her start in the world of competitive dance. It wasn’t uncommon for Ziegler to perform solos, duets, trios, and group dances on stage in front of a large audience. When "Wednesday" premiered in October 2022, it swiftly smashed records on Netflix, becoming the most-watched English-language series in the history of the streamer. When you consider how much the show's star, Jenna Ortega, played a role in that success with her deadpan, unblinking performance as the title character, it's hard to believe she very nearly didn't star in the hit series.
In a March 11 interview with The Times (via Variety), Ortega revealed she actually turned down the role of Wednesday . . . and not just once. "I got the email, passed on it," she said. "I had done so much TV in my life. All I've ever wanted to do is film . . . You have to prove yourself. It's only in the last three or four years that I've been able to start going up for film. I was scared that by signing on to another television show it could prevent me from doing...

Thanks to the smash hit that is Wednesday, more people are being introduced to Jenna Ortega than ever before. The Netflix show has made the actor a household name, with her popularity increasing by the day. Since the show’s debut in November, Ortega’s following has increased by the millions. However, she has absolutely no interest in being a celebrity.

Jenna Ortega is quickly shaping up to be the scream queen of her generation. The actor’s latest horror film, Scream 6, hit theaters today, and it is already poised to break records within the franchise. But prior to reprising her role as Tara Carpenter, Ortega had a whole host of other spooky projects under her belt. Fans may recall her performances in the 2022 slasher films Scream and X, or in the Netflix shows You and Wednesday. It seems like Ortega truly has an affinity for all things horror, something the Scream team quickly took note of.

Jenna Ortega has no shortage of acting and personal accolades. Most recently, the "You" season two star has (begrudgingly) won hearts as the queen of deadpan, Wednesday Addams, in Netflix's Addams Family revival, "Wednesday."
But Ortega was a major actor long before her new Netflix role. She earned her first acting credit at 9 years old in the television show "Rob." And then, in 2014, she won fans worldwide with her portrayal of young Jane on "Jane the Virgin." In 2016, she was cast as Harley Diaz, the main character in the hit Disney Channel series "Stuck in the Middle." Clearly, Mickey Mouse is a fan because Ortega also went on to voice Princess Isabel in the animated TV series "Elena of Avalor."

Fans of Dance Moms know all too well that Abby Lee Miller demanded perfection from her dancers. The choreographer and former studio owner often screamed out corrections whenever her dancers were rehearsing. If she had to repeat a correction, she often resorted to belittling or humiliating her student. But it seems that Miller’s corrections weren’t limited to her studio or even things that she herself choreographed. In fact, Maddie Ziegler revealed that Miller even corrected her on the dance that she did in Sia’s music video, Chandelier.
Abby Lee Miller and Maddie Ziegler Why did Sia tap Maddie Ziegler to be in her music video, ‘Chandelier?’
Thanks to Dance Moms, Ziegler started gainging fans when she was only eight years old. Her musicality, passion for dance, and affinity for winning dance competitions made her a standout in the cast. At 11, The Fallout star managed to capture the attention of Australian singer Sia.

Abby Lee Miller never made it a secret of just how much she favored Maddie Ziegler. From the very first episode of Dance Moms, it was abundantly clear that Miller valued Ziegler above any of her other students. Ziegler started the series at the top of Miller’s hierarchical pyramid and throughout her tenure on the show, she was consistently Miller’s “go-to” girl. But what was it about Ziegler that made her Miller’s favorite? The choreographer once explained what she felt was the secret to the dancer’s success.

Jenna Ortega isn’t easy to faze. The talented 20-year-old has begun to earn the title of the scream queen of her generation thanks to projects such as Scream, X, and Wednesday. And Ortega seems to be pretty fearless off the screen also. She spent her childhood doing autopsies on dead animals and admits that people’s attempts to frighten her with real-life jump-scare moments were pretty fruitless. However, the actor admits that she occasionally felt real fear when she was acting opposite Penn Badgley in You.
‘You’ stars Penn Badgley and Jenna Ortega Who did Jenna Ortega play in the ‘You’ cast?
Fans of You will recall that Ortega gave a standout performance in You Season 2. Portraying the teenaged, cinema-obsessed, Ellie Alves, her character was a great foil to Badgley’s Will Bettelheim, aka Joe Goldberg. Ortega loved playing the sassy teen and going toe-to-to with Badgley’s serial killer character.

From the very first episode of Dance Moms, it was made abundantly clear that Maddie Ziegler was Abby Lee Miller’s favorite. The talented dancer started the series at the top of Miller’s infamous pyramid and pretty much stayed there throughout her entire six-season tenure. Miller constantly sang Ziegler’s praises, telling anyone who would listen that the dancer was destined for success.
While Miller’s methods were questionable at best, her assertions about the levels of success Ziegler would reach were spot on. It wasn’t too long before the dancer became a household name in her own right, with opportunities that eclipsed what Dance Moms could provide her with. Miller even admitted to being a bit jealous that her favorite student was having incredible experiences without her.
