Before entering the DC franchise as Black Adam, Dwayne Johnson had many successful action films under his belt. The former WWE champion-turned-actor featured in films like San Andreas and Rampage apart from being a pivotal presence in The Fast and the Furious franchise. However, apart from this popular film series, The Rock’s other films have surprisingly not expanded into sequels.

Johnson’s producing partner Hiram Garcia attempted to explain the reasons behind this back in 2022. It appeared from Garcia’s revelations that The Scorpion King star’s commitment to DC and his character Black Adam could have been the deciding factor behind a film like Rampage not getting the greenlight for a sequel. As fate would have it, Johnson’s long-term desires for DC went up in smoke.

In hindsight, Marvel’s Infinity Saga ended up serving as an incredibly solid framework for a shared cinematic universe. Say what you will about the aftermath, but Marvel Studios spent the first few years building up to a big crossover in The Avengers, used it to hint at a bigger threat in Thanos, then spent the next several years worldbuilding and setting up a massive two-part climax. Whatever vision went into it paid off.
Part of that comes from the hype generated by mid and post-credits scenes. Starting with Nick Fury visiting Tony Stark to discuss “the Avengers Initiative” way back in 2008’s Iron Man, these segments usually did a great job setting up new movies and plot points before eventually paying them off. Gag scenes aside, these were the epitome of the shared universe concept working out, and there were very few post-credits scenes in the first three phases...

Brian De Palma's "Carrie" was the film that defined a generation. Its blend of coming-of-age themes, fantastical magic, and slasher-style bloodshed makes it a genre-bending film that time just can't seem to forget.
The 1976 horror tells the story of a sheltered girl who lives under her obsessively religious mother's tyrannical rule, a dictatorship made all the worse by the onset of Carrie's period. Her mother's frenzy combined with a cruel prank at the prom pushes the shy young girl to a mental break, complete with telekinetic powers. The Stephen King adaptation launched some incredibly notable careers, including John Travolta, who plays high school bully Billy Nolan. Sadly, not all of the cast has lived to see the end of 2023, including Piper Laurie, whose performance as Carrie's mother earned her one of three Oscar nominations in her lifetime.

Netflix’s multi-year deal with Skydance Animation, which shifted over from Apple TV+, “helps complement the work that we’re doing” with original animated fare, Co-CEO Ted Sarandos said.
Partnering with third parties across the board “really helps us” to “keep up that scale as we grow,” the exec said on the company’s third-quarter earnings interview. Animation as a subset of the overall content mix has been an increasing priority in recent years, with co-founder and Executive Chairman Reed Hastings first publicly calling attention to it when he was running Netflix as CEO. In Ángel Manuel Soto’s Blue Beetle, a teenager finds a magical contraption that he isn’t supposed to touch, stolen from an evil corporation trying to unlock its secrets, but once he does, he finds himself overtaken by a super-powered suit, which the corporation wants back at all costs. If that premise sounds at all unique, mysterious, and refreshing, welcome to planet Earth. But for anyone who’s seen even a single superhero movie released in the past 20 years, you’d be right to worry about that premise sounding like a harbinger of the dullness to come.

Summer movie-going is not done just yet: in the waning days of the season, there are four more studio releases before Labor Day. Universal’s R-rated animal comedy “Strays” opens this Friday, while Sony has the delayed “Gran Turismo” on August 25 and “The Equalizer 3” (Sony) on September 1. Most intriguing, though? Friday’s other big release.
DC Comics’ “Blue Beetle” (Warner Bros.) will arrive this weekend alongside “Strays,” and it appears to be the biggest question mark left on the release calendar, with the potential to rise above the others and exceed expectations in the process. But whatever it ultimately grosses, its release raises a number of interesting questions likely to be a big part of next weekend’s analysis, with the potential to have an impact on production decisions as well as current distribution decisions.

Outside of its CGI battles, stacked casts and casual disregard that not every series within the franchise needs its own franchise, the Marvel Cinematic Universe might be best known for its implementation of comedy. Certainly the MCU has some legitimately hilarious moments, with some movies landing the laughs better than others (Thor: Ragnarok and the Guardians movies tend to get the most praise here). But according to actor Adam DeVine, who is no stranger to the comedy game, Marvel has outright ruined the genre.
Speaking on the This Past Weekend podcast (per Variety), DeVine said, “You watch comedies nowadays and you’re like, this is not a f*cking comedy…Where are the jokes? Where are the bits? There’s still good [comedy] shows, but movie comedy…it’s hard. My theory: I think Marvel ruined it.” That feels like a bold statement, but DeVine defended it as such: “I feel...

The scrapping of Batgirl from the DC schedule last year was a major blow to comic book movie fans. Despite the studio’s track record, there was plenty of interest around that project: Leslie Grace in the title role, Brendan Fraser as the key villain and Michael Keaton as Batman. Instead, 2022 and 2023 had Black Adam, a Shazam! sequel and The Flash, which at least did give us Keaton. But we all wanted to see how DC would handle Batgirl – and now curiosity has piqued yet again, as the logo remains on a promotional standee for Blue Beetle. Ok, now they’re just rubbing it in!
In an image posted to Twitter this week, a user showed off a Blue Beetle standee while also pointing out that “if you enhance on the bottom of the stand there’s this cool little easter egg…” along with a skull emoji. That easter egg...

We can knock Disney all we want over less-than stellar post-Covid results on Marvel, Pixar and Lucasfilm titles, but the fact of the matter is the brands are still delivering, making the theatrical motion picture studio the continued box office leader with $3.4 billion worldwide for the period of Jan. 1-July 2.
That breaks out to $1.35 billion domestic and $2.05 billion abroad, and this is off of seven theatrical releases so far in 2023. Exhibitors can continue to give thanks that the former practitioner of theatrical day-and-date on streaming is no longer doing so and committed to a theatrical window, thus seeing the financial vibrancy of a downstream model post-pandemic. The riches of that trigger concession sales for theater owners and other exhibition ancillary businesses and beyond (i.e. Imax).

Josh Duhamel will join the ensemble of the survival thriller “Not Without Hope,” an adaptation of Nick Schuyler and Jere Longman’s best-selling book that will be written and directed by Joe Carnahan. Also joining the cast are JoBeth Williams, Quentin Plair, Terrence Terrell and Marshall Cook.
As previously announced, Zachary Levi (“Shazam!”) is starring in the film, which tells the real-life story of a tragic 2009 boating accident involving Schuyler, his friends Will Bleakley (Cook) and NFL players Marquis Cooper (Plair) and Corey Smith (Terrell). Levi will play Schuyler.
The search-and rescue-operation captivated national attention. Duhamel will portray U.S. Coast Guard Captain Timothy Close, who oversaw a crew that cut through the ocean to try to find the friends who went missing. Carnahan has some experience orchestrating survival tales, having previously directed “The Grey,” which found Liam Neeson battling very hungry wolves after a plane crash stranded his character in a snowy mountain range.

Marion Cotillard is opening up about an unpleasant experience she had with a male director who left her feeling “manipulated.”
Cotillard shared the revelation while promoting her new film, “Little Girl Blue”, at the Cannes Film Festival.
“I don’t see a director and an actor as being in relationships of manipulation. It’s more a collaboration. It happened to me only once where I felt that I was being manipulated by a director, and I really didn’t like that,” she said in an interview with Variety.

The last time WGA picket lines formed in 2007, writers didn’t have an efficient way to communicate with fellow strikers about group meet-ups, illegal productions, and all those clever placards. The only place they could turn to for regular information was this very space, in which the late Nikki Finke would post regular missives about strike action, the broken-off negotiations and the financial impact of the 100-day work stoppage.
My, have times changed. Even with the new and so-not-improved platform under Elon Musk, Twitter has become the go-to town square for writers looking for either marching orders or just plain encouragement from their fellow strikers. When writers aren’t trying to boost morale, they are posting selfies from the picket lines and sharing locations where more reinforcements are needed to battle the AMPTP, the trade association representing the entertainment companies.

Dwayne Johnson has been working on getting the DC/Warner Bros. movie "Black Adam" to the big screen for a long time. He's been attached to the project for over a decade, and all these years later, though Covid delays and reshuffling, it's finally happening. The film will show us both the origin of Teth-Adam, aka Black Adam, as well as his interactions with the Justice Society of America.

While the fall festivals continue to launch several high-profile Oscar hopefuls from the U.S., many international contenders are at the mercy of their countries. The Academy requires films to be submitted for the Best International Feature Film category by October 3, but outside of requiring a theatrical release and that the language is at least 50 non-English, the countries can make their own decisions. For some countries known for censoring artists, such as Russia and Iran, that means films critical of their governments or societies don’t stand a chance at making the cut.
Yet this year, several films about sexuality and queerness from the Middle East are on the cusp of overcoming legal and cultural barriers to become their country’s submissions, and they’re all traveling to the Toronto International Film Festival this week. In the past, films with LGBTQ characters in countries that outlaw homosexuality have faced a tough road in Oscar season,...

This story was first published after the Sundance premiere of “Leaving Neverland” on January 25, 2019.
The Sundance Film Festival had extra security on hand for its premiere of the documentary “Leaving Neverland,” amid fears that protesters would try to disrupt the film in which two men make detailed accusations that they were molested by Michael Jackson.
But before the screening, the two protesters on hand were far outnumbered by press looking for a story. And four hours later, after the long and devastating film, no Jackson fans even attempted to disrupt the Q&A with director Dan Reed and Jackson accusers Wade Robson and James Safechuck, who were greeted by a standing ovation.
“Leaving Neverland,” which premieres March 3 on HBO, allows Robson and Safechuck and their families to tell their stories, which are remarkably similar: meetings with Jackson as a child dancer (Robson) and actor (Safechuck), invitations to hang out with Jackson,...

Amid the calls for leadership diversity at film festivals, Sundance director John Cooper did something about it: promoting feature programmer Kim Yutani to become the fest’s director of programming in May. Aside from her Asian-American heritage and gender, this appointment makes Sundance the first major film festival with two Lgbt leaders. Yutani and Cooper previously worked at Outfest L.A.
“She has incredible taste and an understanding of what festival curation is, as opposed to just a critical eye,” Cooper says of Outfest’s former artistic director. “A kicker was that she knows a lot of the industry around the world. I started getting such great feedback from people outside the U.S. of how much she was respected, especially as we build up our world cinema presence. It just all fell into place.”
“Once Trevor [Groth, the previous director] announced that he was leaving [to join marketing and distribution company 30West], it really made me think: What is the next step in my career?...

The world of Bioshock combines complex thought-provoking concepts with high octane action. As stunning and fascinating as the cities of Rapture and Columbia are, both are crawling with highly hostile and deadly enemies. The enemies that we encounter in Bioshock are all uniquely terrifying and are just as complex as the ideas explored in the plots. Take a look at some of our favourite enemies from the Bioshock trilogy.
5. The Handyman
Once a man, the robotic monstrosity known as The Handyman is a powerful enemy that you encounter in Bioshock Infinite. Taking the form of a heavily armoured man with giant mechanical limbs, the Handyman was created as a way to help men who were severely injured. The experiment allowed its subjects to not only once again become able-bodied but to also technically live forever.
Despite being given a second shot at life, many Handymen are miserable. Some have been...

If you ever played Bioshock and thought to yourself, "Rapture is cool and all, but I'd like to see this game played out in an Arabian-themed map" then you probably work for Uppercut Games. The indie developer released a new trailer to announce the May release date!
The Indie company, based in Australia, gave former Senior members of the Bioshock developing team an outlet to create a brand-new first-person game free from the confines of the underwater city or a city above the clouds. The result became a game brought back in time to the Arabian streets. This is City of Brass...
Feels a lot like Bioshock, right? Only, it's not nearly as creepy as the first game was. Instead, the game's art direction takes on a more cartooney direction, with warlocks, skeletal warriors, and ogres. Instead of using Adam to power up, City of Brass utilizes magic to blast through hoards of enemies.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: Which character(s) on a TV show that aired in 2017 deserves their own spinoff?
Damian Holbrook (@damianholbrook), TV Guide Magazine
I would be down for a show built around Laura Dern’s one-episode role on “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” as Wendy Hebert, the flaky “mystery bitch” who wanted to marry Rev. Richard Wayne Gary Wayne (Jon Hamm). Mostly because Dern is the absolute shit and she should be doing more comedy. And secondly because this could be, as the theme song says, a fascinating transition from the lightly touched-upon trauma Kimmy (Ellie Kemper) endured at her kidnapper’s hand to a darker comedic exploration into the...

"He's actually a really cool guy." Screen Media Films has unveiled the first official trailer for an enjoyable indie comedy titled Literally, Right Before Aaron, telling the story of a heartbroken man invited to the wedding of his most recent ex-girlfriend. Justin Long stars in this fairly typical story about a guy dealing with a tough breakup and accepting the reality of letting go, while embracing the comedy in romance. The ensemble cast includes Cobie Smulders as his ex, as well as Ryan Hansen, John Cho, Kristen Schaal, Dana Delany, Peter Gallagher, Lea Thompson, and Luis Guzmán. This premiered at the Tribeca and Nantucket Film Festivals and seems like a painfully funny, awkwardly charming little comedy. Take a look. Here's the first trailer (+ poster) for Ryan Eggold's Literally, Right Before Aaron, from YouTube: Still reeling from his recent breakup, Adam (Justin Long) is devastated when he learns that his ex (Cobie Smulders) is engaged.
