A brave start to the new season, obviously with story arc follow-ups to come. It confronts several problems that to the rest of the world have been apparent in the USA for decades. Racism, gang culture, vigilantism, over-reaching violence from the police, and others. In Kevin Atwater's story arc he comes up against the "blue wall" which consolidates several of these problems. That all police have to support all other police, no matter if they're wrong, if you don't you get punished - gang culture. That anyone is above the law - vigilantism. That police can do what they like in pursuit of a criminal... Your Honour, I rest my case. The agencies of a country governed by laws must adhere to these laws, or the country falls into chaos. (I have to accept that the situation in the US is a bit more complicated, having federal laws and state laws that don't really agree, and an out-of-date constitution that cannot reconcile the two in modern conditions - population mobility, racial and gender equality, general change in ethical standards, advancement in medical and forensic techniques, etc.) Atwater is standing out against this cancerous culture in his way, as Voight was in his. I think the most telling moment of this episode is the scene of Voight sitting alone in the office, all his team having gone. He's not going to change (much) but his time has gone. It's time to pass the baton. It's interesting that this episode attracts so many reviews (23 at this count) when the normal for the series has been zero to six. You can judge for yourself whence these negative reviews are coming. God bless America! Except that the US is supposed to be a religion-free state, as per the first amendment to the Constitution... So maybe I should retract that blessing? Like I said, the Constitution needs a serious review.
