Quite boring
What-a-Punk16 December 2023
If you ever seen a horror movie, the chances are you know from the start where all this is going. And there will be no surprises.

So the main problem of this movie is the plot, its based on classic folklore stories and follows the path that so many movies (or even child stories) have shown before. Which might be good... but it does not exceed any expectation.

So some might call it a classic, some might call it a cliche. Either way, its not unique, its not new, even the creature - I saw it in dozen other movies, and I can name multiple where its simply executed better ("The Ritual", for example).

In other terms, it is mediocre. Characters are not very likable or believable. The motivation of the antagonist (for example) and his image - I believe they are severly lacking any originality or style, they are so superficial it hurts.

Ending is simply weak - culmination is unsatisfying. It is simple (which is good sometimes), but it ain't smart or fulfilling, or entertaining in this case.

So I'd say the score I've given in generous. It's a mediocre movie. Some might say its okay, some might say its bad, but there is no basis to call it great - that is for sure.

I see multiple ways this could've been a better movie (just add a single thing that isn't a trope), but it is obvious that nobody bothered here to create something new or unique, this is just same old same old once again.

Falls flat sadly
The_eyes_of_Anna24 January 2024
Starts off with some promise but quickly outstays it's welcome. Ralph Ineson does a good job of playing brooding local Jocelyn Abney but the plot regarding the disappearance of a vicars daughter at a harvest festival thingy has nowhere particularly exciting to go.

Folk horror with its strange pagan symbols and odd country folk with their odd country ways, it's not actually that scary is it?, not in this movie anyway. And it starts to grate after a time.

It reminded me somewhat of a better and rather underrated movie called The Witches from 1966.

Word around the village is the daughter has been abducted by a harvest spirit called Gallawgog.

The mother of the child is played by Tuppence Middleton and she looks suitably anguished throughout and does a good job I thought.

To be honest this was a hard slog and i started to not particularly care what the outcome was. Young Evie Templeton puts in a good turn as the missing daughter, and maybe if your in to Folk Horror more than me you will enjoy it more.

I found it rather washed out and worse , unintentionally funny at times.

People Do Not Act Like This
thalassafischer30 April 2024
We have a vicar who rarely acts very religious (except in church) and drops F-bombs casually on multiple occasions. Her spouse seems like a bitter atheist and will not pray with her. I mean, they seem more like an average mismatched couple - one theistic, one not - than AN ACTUAL VICAR OF A CHURCH and her husband.

People get angry and then calm down within seconds. They don't have much respect for the vicar and treat her more like a random crazy woman than anything else. The children even start chanting in a vulgar way, gleefully, without a hint of fear or embarrassment at acting that way in front a church pastor.

I feel like Lord of Misrule is a patchwork attempt to mimic other, older horror movies. Like mixing 1970s The Wicker Man with 2000s Silent Hill and a random urinating scene like the original version of The Exorcist.

Lord of Misrule does have atmosphere and lovely folk horror aesthetics yet the writing and character development are significantly wanting.

Simply awful
raudonisernestas17 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The characters were unlikable, the acting bad, and the story and actions made no sense, whatsoever. Was watching this in the theater, and the audience were laughing at the absurdity of the story and characters.

For example, without spoiling anything - one character could have prevented (or at least tried to) another character's death, but they simply stood (literally next to the person) and did nothing but scream. Do yourself a favor and skip this movie.

The only positive aspects of the movie were maybe the idea (never heard about the lord of misrule, personally) and the actor for the main antagonist.

Ignore the hate...

Any comparison to "The Wicker Man" is in passing; ie a small village seemingly trapped in the past that believes in a folklore legend. That is it.

Someone called this "amateurish". Well as an avid film watcher, former pro actor, and a vet of the biz I can point to a half dozen or more "films" that were shot by apparent teenagers that managed to get distributed via VOD, or before that, VHS. (Actually I am doing a disservice to teenage movie makers as I was once one and made better films than some of the crap I have seen professionally presented!!)

This is an engaging movie that keeps your interest from start to finish. No one phones in a performance and the script, while it does level a bit in the middle, provides enough twists to make this very worth your watching while.

Refund, please.
ranwulfs23 December 2023
The UK is already rich with folk tales and old beliefs, but this isn't one of them. The actual Lord of Misrule is an "office" during the Tudor and Stuart periods in which the selected person oversaw the feasting and merriment during the twelve days of Christmas. It fell out of favor during and after the Interregnum. He was usually selected from among the servants or other low ranking people and only "ruled" during those 12 days. This film turns him into some sort of Halloween bogie man, a mystical figure who goes about cavorting with evil spirits and welding power and influence year 'round. Tosh. The writer bastardized an old English Christmas tradition and tried to pass it off as a horror movie - and steals from every "small English village steeped in supposedly ancient pagan rituals and assorted mumbo jumbo" movie/television episode ever made (and there have been a slew of 'em) in the process. Add to that the writing is somewhere between "saw that coming a mile away," and "well, that made zero sense." Pick one. If you've seen The Wicker Man, you've already seen this drivel. I rented it on Amazon Prime and am considering requesting a refund. Skip it and thank me later.

Nothing new but nicely put together.
paulgrobinson1 February 2024
Tuppence Middleton Ralph Innes.

This film joins a raft of folklore horror films over the years. To be fair though it was pretty well put together and I liked the pace. You don't always have to have action, beautiful actors, gratuitous violence and cgi..this is just an honest and decent sinister film. Special mentions to Tuppence Middleton who I thought was outstanding and very plausible as the vicar. Ralph Innes played his part very well too. People giving this 9 or 10 of 10 are way off the mark, as are those clowns giving it 1s and 2s. It's a decent effort in a saturated market, and while I likely wouldn't watch it a second time I did enjoy it.

Decent folk horror.

Warning: Spoilers
Whenever I find myself in a rural village environment- Bures,Wormingford,Long Melford to any place woodland to old churches to graveyards I find myself in a reveree of nostalgia for old horror movies to English folk lore to MR James. Like the past is calling through the wind in the trees .

It never leaves me.

This movie put me in that mindset.

The photography, music work well together,Ralph Ineson is excellent (as ever) and it wears its influences proudly - too numerous to name here!

Its maybe a little clichéd and predictable when we discover the entire village is involved especially when most of the secondary cast overact bizarrely.

I liked the saying " He stands in the fields and waits"and living in a village with lots of fields surrounding I daydream that something lurking is underneath especially on frosty mornings.

Amateurish.
seven-johnson26 January 2024
I'd been quite looking forwards to this - although, if I'd bothered to look up the directors' previous work, I may have skipped it entirely and saved myself the runtime for some high-quality napping.

Instead I watched it and got some low-quality napping.

First the good - Ralph Inneson earned some money for this and hopefully he can maybe avoid doing the next bad film that comes up off the back of that.

Secondly, Tuppence - yes that's her real name is quite convincing in the role of a medicore pedophile.

That's it. Those are the two upsides to the tiresome Wicker Man knock off.

It's a somewhat dismal state of affairs to see the film industry self-destructing due to banality across the board, but these are the times we live in I suppose.

Folklore Fascination
JoshuaMercott29 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Portraying a strange town, pagan customs, and an old English wilderness deity known for his association with harvests, "Lord of Misrule" felt like an interesting movie to see, especially for a horror fan like myself. It presented a familiar but engaging story that focused more on not knowing instead of full-fledged revelations.

Some ancient customs associated with an age-old English harvest festival - going back to the early 1600s - were ideally showcased in the movie. I also liked how they portrayed the town's female Catholic vicar Rebecca Holland (played by Tuppence Middleton). This cleverly harkened back to pagan roots where women led ceremonies of religious and spiritual importance.

Rebecca was married and had a daughter named Grace (played by Evie Templeton) with husband Henry (played by Matt Stokoe). A lot of the mystery revolved around Grace, making her a focal point in the movie. All three gave natural and notable performances.

The culture-contrast between ancient paganism and modern Catholicism lent the movie a special kind of gravitas. The Hollands had only recently moved to the town, so much of its practices were still foreign to them.

Ralph Ineson as Jocelyn Abney was intriguing to watch. It was also nice to see his own real-life son Luc play a small part in this movie, namely that of Derry Nash.

Ralph's every scene felt suspenseful and substantial. His masked pageantry, stage-play renditions, and bonfire (Feast of Fools) celebrations surrounding the titular Lord of Misrule added to the suspense.

Ineson played his pagan character to simple yet remarkable effect. He apparently represented one who stood against Gallowgog, a contrary antlered entity said to ruin crops. In truth, he was a believer in the old ways and unearthed unnerving but essential truths about Gallowgog being a miraculous, not maleficent, entity.

When Grace later went missing in the woods during the town's harvest festival, hell broke loose in a way, leading to fear, suspicion, and worse as the Hollands strove to make sense of what might have happened to their little girl.

The only clues seemed to be connected to the four-day custom itself, and what each day demanded by way of gifts - Gift of Hair, Gift of Blood, Gift of Fire, Death of the Sun. In addition, seeing strange cloaked figures with masks amplified Rebecca's anxiety. Her personal investigations led her to Derry Nash (played by Luc Ineson) who gave her critical answers that led her to the dreaded Black Barn.

"Lord of Misrule" felt equally unnerving, uncomfortable, and eye-opening, not to forget open to interpretation. It captured the capricious nature of deities, and how so-called human rules and definitions don't always apply when it comes to the worship of ancient entities like Gallowgog.

Rural flourishes, pastoral flair, and pagan beliefs blended into a classic English folktale movie that took chilling liberties to deliver sinister twists, concluding with an interesting answer as to what actually happened to Grace and why she was allowed to return.

The movie provided plenty of lore-based possibilities that she might have become this year's tithe to the ancient fertility god Gallowgog. But then, even this out-of-time deity approved an act of devotion. The movie thus took a supposedly horrific creature and genuinely made it seem like a god.

"All is as was."

Disappointing...
paul_haakonsen14 April 2024
"Lord of Misrule", from writer Tom de Ville, was a horror movie that I had never heard about. I happened to stumble upon the movie by random chance here in 2024, and of course opted to watch it, given my life-long fascination and love of the horror genre.

Naturally I had no expectations to the movie, as I had never heard about it. Nor did I actually know what I was in for here. And I suppose, on that account, then director William Brent Bell had every opportunity to entertain and bedazzle me with this 2023 movie.

The storyline that Tom de Ville wrote was a bit boring. Sure, there were interesting enough aspects to the storyline, but the pacing of the narrative was slow and mundane, and there simply wasn't enough of anything interesting, much less actually scary, happening, and that made sitting through "Lord of Misrule" somewhat of a struggle and an ordeal.

I wasn't familiar with the cast ensemble in the movie. But the acting performances in the movie were fair, despite the fact that the movie failed to entertain me.

Visually then you're not in for anything grand here. The movie is not one that relies on special effects, jump scares, etc. To tell it tale.

I have to say that I wasn't particularly entertained by director William Brent Bell's 2023 movie. And this is definitely not a movie that I will ever return to watch a second time. Nor is it a movie that I will recommend to fans of horror movies.

My rating of "Lord of Misrule" lands on a very generous three out of ten stars.

People who don't like this movie don't like good movies
LineOfDuty24 February 2024
I don't understand what people expect from this movie. Was it too sophistocated? Was there not enough sex and swearing and bad acting? I know that's what everyone thinks makes a good movie these days so.... I'm not an older person either and I'm not a prude. I'm just tired of trash movies.

For this one, the acting is great and the story is very good. The setting is in a beautiful English town and countryside. I liked that it didn't end like a lot of movies, with having the viewer interpret what happened or leaving it completely open ended to interpretation. That gets old and can really be lazy on the writing end of it.

Sturdy British Folk Horror
marshalsea-547-99225426 March 2024
It's not a perfect film, but it does a lot right and is worth your time if you like this type of thing.

In line with what I expected from the director - the story is going to be a rehash and not perfect, but certainly nothing offensively bad.

Casting, Directing, general pace is all fine... I notice a few other reviews complaining about the pace - absolutely nothing wrong with it, it's building tension and the general meh of rural life.

The writing, as others have pointed out, is a bit... well traditional Folk Horror... but where is there to go with it? If you've read a few Folk Horror books you'll notice the same things coming up: Harvests and sacrifices - often unwilling. So... complaining that a Folk Horror contains all the required Folk Horror tropes seems a bit odd to me (which seems to be the running trend here).

It leans heavily into Christianity vs The Old Ways, and treats Christianity with a rare respect - the Vicar is not a overtly double standard kiddie fiddler for once, they're a sympathetic character that you can get behind. Some clever steps here: make it CoE and make the Vicar female. Allows an awful lot of legwork to be done in your head.

Does it want to be The Wicker Man, well obviously.

Is it The Wicker Man, well... course not - but what is? You can't compare a Michellin Movie with a midrange offering - you'd be a fool.

The casting is superb, not only Middleton and Ineson, but the supporting cast as well - they carry the middling story a very long way.

Rip off of Rip offs

Wicker man, the ritual, kill list, men, wake wood etc etc .

This was so poor it was barely believable.

I was looking forward to this for months, great cast , smashing trailer and I was so disappointed. It was a badly made mish mash of every movie that features any village folklore, but instead of creating something new- this just stole snipets from so many good films.

It dragged out and was slow and boring. There is a twist however , and anyone could guess it after first seeing finchy.

The movie could've been squashed into 30 minutes, in fact, reece and Steve at number 9 have done so a few years ago in series 7 of inside no9 , the episode 'mr king'

Just don't bother with this. It's awful.

Nothing special to see but also not a bad movie
aronharde6 April 2024
In 2023's Lord of Misrule we are introduced to a woman who moves to a small rural English village to take over the church. After the villagers celebrate the Winter Festival, her young daughter suddenly disappears and therefore her search for her missing daughter begins.

The movie is a pagan horror story with a suspenseful atmosphere and some mysterious characters. But sadly the movie mostly falls into some generic plot lines and has no outstanding strengths. There's not much special to talk about that the movie could use to separate itself from the masses. It is directed by William Brent Bell who directed quite a few horror movies before ranging from pretty good to pretty bad and I think this one just walks the line of being average. It's not terrible but also not great either and the movies biggest strength is probably the casting of Ralph Ineson as one of the villagers. However I did like the ending and therefore I overall don't regret watching this. [5,2/10]

Really bad, only redeeming quality is the cinematography/imagery in a few scenes. Warning: Spoilers
I don't think there was a single character that acted like a normal human being in this whole film. The plot twist was they were all aliens right? I mean it was obvious from the fifteen minute mark that the entire town was "in on it" when it comes to the weird harvest god cult thing. Like painfully obvious and in your face. So the town was so blatantly unconcerned and seemed happy, even the husband (who I almost thought was in on it) seemed totally unconcerned with his daughter's disappearance. So we just have scene after scene of "That's weird. Woah, that's weird. Ahhh, that's weird. Wow-ee, that's weird, hey you catching on that they are all in the cult yet bozo? The children being indoctrinated from a young age with "nature club" or whatever, them all berating her, a very clear "us and them" type scene, obviously if it's all the children it's all the adults too, but we figured that out like 40 minutes ago at this point didn't we? I mean just really on the nose indications that the town is all together and the protagonists are the outsiders, The same scene rehashed essentially over and over up until the end finale leads to a boring movie. There is already a dozen or so movies that are this same plot that do it better. Would rather watch Midsommar or even the scarecrow episode of Supernatural...

Superb old English folk music and acting
davidhammond-3779118 February 2024
Really enjoyed the film, will watch it again definitely.

Superb acting and story, especially the music I wanted more music.

The folk song at the start of the film was truly sung Superb. Also at the end of the film.

Tuppence Middleton was Superb and her daughter in this film.

I wouldn't of called this a horror movie.

I am pleased Bunny survived the film, Superb work 👏 I will definitely look into the history of the story I believe the festival evolved from accent Rome, and passed into the UK from the Roman empire.

The whole feel of the movie reminded me of the wickerman, this had a similar feel which I believe the director got this perception just perfect.

The two child actors where very good, and the old ladies.

The Main characters are good. The guy with the deep voice who was on trigger point is good I believe he is a voice actor also for that antique series with that clever headed guy Huge.

All in all I really enjoy it especially the music.

One of the best horror movies out there
Mawrak29 October 2023
I'm speechless after watching this film, its incredible. This is a 10/10 movies, it has great story and atmosphere. Sound design and environments will make you immersed in the plot and you will feel the main character's despair. The conclusion to the film is also incredibly satisfying, its so rare that horrors get this right but this one really does. The authors also put a lot of effort into creative the lore surrounding events of this film, excellent work.

If you love horror that focuses on atmosphere and characters rather than gore and jumpscares, I highly recommend you give this movie a shot, you won't regret it.

"Lord of Misure" is one of the best horror movies of the year.
jp_9122 December 2023
"Lord of Misrule" is an excellent folk horror film, co-produced between the United Kingdom and Ireland, the film pays tribute to this subgenre of horror cinema which has its origins in the United Kingdom and whose most emblematic production of this type is "The Wicker Man" (1973). "Lord of Misure" has an effective script that touches on the elements of folk horror in an intelligent way, mixing paganism and religion to provide a dark story accompanied by dialogue that is terrifying in an elegant and old-fashioned way. It is worth highlighting the cinematography with an autumnal and totally gloomy style, standing out in each shot. The cast performs at an excellent level. The soundtrack is effective, evidently based on European pagan festivals. The level of production is spectacular, taking care of every detail and exploiting its potential. "Lord of Misure" is one of the best horror movies of the year.

Thoroughly enjoyable

Warning: Spoilers
I am not a big critic of TV but I greatly enjoyed this movie. It had me scared, it had me interested, it had me looking forward to seeing what happens next, and surprisingly , at the end, even felt wholesome. As something based on British folklore it's not necessarily unique, but it's a great new take on a classic(?) tale. I loved seeing all the pagan elements, especially as someone who doesn't know too much about it but absolutely loves old fairytales and stories, as well as different representations of them in media. Essentially, if you're not a self proclaimed 'movie snob', you'll probably enjoy this too.

Incredible
sjbunder9 December 2023
I loved this movie, but honestly, I'd expect nothing less from Tom de Ville, who has proven himself to be an absolutely remarkable writer. This movie had me tense within the first ten minutes, constantly surprised throughout. The format of the movie is enjoyable, something that those who read will find both familiar and comforting as it is broken into chapters. The acting was fantastic, solid choices that made the characters relatable. Some of the voices in this movie will stick with me for ages, Jocelyn specifically. Effects that were used were well done and not over the top in the way of production.

The story is amazing, and it does a fantastic job of keeping you wondering what is going to happen next. There is a desperation to it that makes you feel as if you should do something to help Rebecca throughout, a frustration when it feels as if no one is listening to her. Toward the end of the movie there is a great sense of urgency, it creeps up on you until you feel restless in your seat as it builds. There is so much symbolism in this movie that it feels as if you'd need to re-watch it in order to capture it all, but I am very much looking forward to seeing the movie again.

I have to touch on the musical score, too. Sensational.

10/10 can't wait to watch again.

Folk horror at its best
jacque_steel6 May 2024
Surprised at the negativity to this film. Yes it is derivative of folk horror movies such as The Wicker Man (original ofc) but it's shot beautifully and the characters are very watchable.

Having attended many folk events in rural England I think the director captures the jolly lighthearted atmosphere that begins to turn dark really well.

Some genuinely visceral horror, creepiness and death scenes.

The final 5 minutes are surprising, especially when the initial plot felt guessable.

This film is not for those who want shallow stories and silly jump scares. It's dark and it takes its time. If you like folk horror produced with genuine style I'd recommend.
