April, who was recently fired from the aquarium for asking too many questions, helps Shawn and Gus sneak into the aquarium after hours, where they find a GPS tracking computer in Labayda's office. Before Shawn and Gus can sneak out, they are caught by a security guard when Shawn tries to fulfill his lifelong ambition of riding a dolphin.
After April explains the situation to the police, Detective O'Hara helps them with the investigation. Shawn and Gus "borrow" Shawn's dad's fishing boat and follow the last GPS coordinates from Labayda's computer, leading them to a restricted reef area off the coast. There they encounter two suspicious men on a boat with no lights in the middle of the night, who claim they are on their way to Monterey.
Shawn and Gus find video footage of Labayda's last trip, and learn that he was tracking the sea lion, but did not kill it. They determine that the two men they met in restricted waters must have shot the sea lion, thinking it was a diver interrupting their illegal salvage operation, and tried to pull it onto their boat, but it swam away before dying. Shawn and Gus find the sea lion's GPS tracking tag aboard the men's boat at the marina, but are trapped inside the boat when the men return.
Shawn sends a text message to Detective O'Hara, who is able to follow the boat to a warehouse using Labayda's confiscated GPS computer. There the two men are arrested, and the police find property in the warehouse that the men salvaged from a crashed plane belonging to smugglers that Detective Lassiter had been searching for.
Shawn wants to go out with April, but she refuses, not wanting to get between him and Detective O'Hara.
